Make today matter Postgraduate Scholarships in 3456 The Public Intellectual in Times of Wicked Problems Closing Date: 30 November 2018 Successful applicants will be assigned a project supervisor from within the Faculty of Humanities to help develop their application into a formal research proposal and then guide them through their project. Applications should be submitted to: Ms Heather Thuynsma ([email protected]) and cc: [email protected] The ‘public intellectual’ is central to the performance of intellectual labour in public engagement and is contingent on a recognition of the wicked problems of our time. Nuanced work on the public intellectual is at the heart of humanism and critical responsibility. This interdisciplinary project, funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation, encourages new conceptual, empirical and creative work on the public intellectual. Applicants should propose projects that will help to develop a deep, contextualised understanding about the character, meanings, and features of the public intellectual i.e. how they are shaped and what they disclose for interpretations of the human in relation to the kinds of knowledge that are generated by enquiry in this field. Proposals should focus broadly on these Areas of Research: The meaning of the Public Intellectual in South Africa’s context; The Intellectual in the Public Sphere and theories of public space; The meaning and reception of public knowledge in African contexts; A public understanding of science; Histories and formations of Public Intellectual Life; The role of the intellectual in emergencies, crises and the court of public opinion; and Representations of the Public Intellectual We would like to invite applications from students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged groups.
