COMMUNICATIONSPresident:Dr.MaryEllenMazey
1. BGSUcontinuestohavestrongenrollmentsasdiscussedearlierthisfallandshowninourFall2016enrollments.AswelookforwardtotheFallof2017,theenrollmentscontinuetolookstrong.Atthispoint,wearerunningsomewhatbehindinapplicationsbecauseofourchangetotheCommonApplication.However,housingdeposits,whicharethebestindicatorofenrollments,areaheadoflastyearatthistimebyapproximately15percent.
2. TheChancellorrequestedthatIco-chairtheOhioGuaranteedTransferPathwayStatewideSteeringCommitteewithMarciaBallinger,PresidentofLorainCountyCommunityCollege.Dr.JohnFischeralsorepresentsBGSUonthiscommittee.Thegoalistoreduceduplicationofcoursesforstudentstransferringfromcommunitycollegestopublicuniversitiesfortheirdegrees.Inthepast,thisworkhasbeendonebyTAGsforcourses.Thecommitteeisstartingwithbroaddisciplinaryareassuchasbusinessassociatedegreesanddeterminingwhatisneededtotransfertheprogramtoafour-yeardegreeatapublicuniversityinOhio.BGSUcurrentlyhasbeenworkingwithOwensCommunityCollege,CuyahogaCountyCommunityCollege,LorainCountyCommunityCollegeandSinclairCommunityCollege.
3. IampleasedtoreportthatwehavealeadgiftfortheCBAbuilding.TheplanistopubliclyannouncethedonorsandtheplansforthebuildingattheFebruaryBOTmeeting.
4. Withthesupportoftheleadershipoftheconstituentgroups—faculty,staff,andstudents,wewillundertakearevisiontoourpolicyhandbooksandrelateddocumentstoensurethattheyareup-to-date,exemplifybestpracticesanddonotconflictwitheachother,Universitypolicies,StateofOhiopoliciesorfederalpolicies.SenateChairHipplerwillworkwithBOTSecretaryPauken,ProvostRogersandVicePresidentBalzertoseekinputontheserevisions,draftrevisionsandpresenttherevisionstoallfacultyandstaffinopenforumsandothervenues.Thegoalistocompletethisprocessthisacademicyear.
5. Finally,IcommendtheSenatefortheirworkontextbookaffordabilityandfortakingaleadershiproleinOhioonthisissue.

deliverydegreeorcertificateprograms,aswellasoff-campusprograms.ThischangewillgointoeffectasoftheFall2017semester.Atthistime,ecampuswillserveastheinstitutionalhomecampusfor100%onlineprograms.Couldtherebeunintendedconsequenceswithourabilitytoretainstudents.A:VPAAFischer-Thiswillgointoeitherecampusormaincampusifprogramis100%online.Provost/VPAA:Dr.RodneyRogers
1. EnrollmentforFall2017-PositivetrendscontinuefornewfreshmenatBGSU.Whileoverallapplicationsaredownslightly,thepaidhousingdepositsarerunning14%greaterthanoneyearago.WearenowusingtheCommonApplicationandthuswemayseesomevariationsinthenumberofapplicationsfromprioryears.
2. FalconFlightPlan-ThegoalistomovetowardsaUniversitypolicythatallundergraduatestudentswillberequiredtopreparea“plan”lifeaftergraduation.Thisisanaturalextensionofthevariousmajormaps,falconinternshipguaranteeandotherinitiativesthatwehavehadatBGSUtoprepareourstudentsforasuccessfullife.Theplanwouldincludepersonal,professionalandcareergoalsandwoulddocumenttheireducationalexperiencesatBGSU.ThegoalwouldbetohaveUndergraduateCouncildevelopandframeworkthatwouldthenbeaskedofeachofourundergraduatedegreeprogramstofurtherdevelop.Fall2018wouldbethegoalforimplementation.Obviously,wewillneedtomovethisinitiativethroughthevariousgovernancebodies.
3. AcademicCalendar-Aspreviouslyannounced,weareindiscussionswiththeUniversityofToledoandOwensCommunityCollegetoinvestigatewaysinwhichwecanalignouracademiccalendarsforthefuture.Historically,wehavebeenalignedbutbothUTandOCChavechangedorareplanningtochangetheiracademiccalendar.IhaveaskedJohnFischertoleadacommitteeoffaculty,staff,andstudentstoinvestigatemovingfroma16weektermtoa15weektermandcreatinganintersessionterm.Thiswouldofcourseneedtomovethroughthevariousgovernancebodies.

October20,2016Effortstoaddressthecostsoftextbooksandcoursematerials(textbookaffordability)weredocumentedaspartofBGSU’s2016AffordabilityandEfficiencyReport.Inadditiontotheacademicpracticeslistedinthedocument,BGSUhasdevelopedrelatedinitiativesinthreeareas,faculty-basedinitiatives,collaborativeeffortswithotherinstitutionsviaOhioLINKandledbyourUniversityLibrariesfaculty,andeducatingtheUniversitycommunityregardingpolicyandadministrativepracticesthatresultinareductioninwhatstudentscurrentlypayfortextbooksandinstructionalmaterials.Faculty-ledInitiatives• Duringthe2016-2017academicyear,BGSU’sFacultySenateisleadingacampus-wideeffort,
emphasizedbyproposingaSenateresolutiontoworkwiththeadministrationandstudentstoaddressthecostoftextbooksandinstructionalmaterialsforBGSUstudents.Thisresolutionandresultingactionplanswill:

WHEREAStheBowlingGreenStateUniversityFacultySenaterepresentsthefacultyvoice;WHEREAStheUniversityfacultyremaincommittedtoacademicexcellence,academicfreedom,useofthe highest quality of published information for faculty teaching and scholarship, and theimprovementoftheUniversitystudents’learningthroughvariouspedagogiesincludingstudentuseof the highest quality of published information including, but not limited to, textbooks and theircompanionmedia(hereafter,textbooks);WHEREAStheUniversitystudentsandtheirfamilies,andthetaxpayersandelectedleadersofOhioall desire accessible, affordable, and the highest quality public higher education to be provided inOhio;WHEREAS one of the rising costs of attaining a high quality university education is the cost oftextbooks;WHEREAStheOhioTaskForceonAffordabilityandEfficiencyhasissuedthechallengetonegotiatecosts,standardizematerialsforgatewaycourses,anddevelopdigitalcapabilitiesinordertoaddresstextbookcosts,striveforefficiencyandvalue,whileofferinganeducationofequalorhigherqualitythanpresentlyavailable;WHEREASitistheUniversityfacultywhorequireandrecommendstudents’useoftextbooks;and,WHEREAS the University faculty support the continual improvement of academic excellence, thepreservationofacademicfreedom,theimprovementofstudentlearning,andthestudents’frequentandaffordableaccesstoanduseofthehighestqualityofpublishedinformation,especiallytextbooks.THEREFOREBEITRESOLVEDthatBowlingGreenStateUniversity’sfaculty,throughitsgovernanceandacademicprocesses, andcreativity, in collaborationwith theadministrationandstudents,willleadOhio higher education by significantly reducing ourBowlingGreen StateUniversity students’costofutilizingtextbooks.BEITFURTHERRESOLVEDthatBowlingGreenStateUniversity’sFacultySenate,throughitsSenateExecutive Committee, will immediately establish an ad hoc committee that will, in 90 days,recommendanongoingprocesstoachievethisaspirationbyaddressing:
• Immediate andongoing textbook cost reduction collaborationwith the administrationandstudents,
• ImmediategatheringofandresponsetorelatedacademicandgovernanceissuesrelatedtotextbookcostreductiontobefinalizedbyMay2017,
• TextbookcostandtextbookcostreductiondatacollectiontobefinalizedbyMay2017,• TextbookcostreductiongoalsettingtobefinalizedbyMay2017informedbyacademic
andgovernanceissues,data,andanaspirationtoincrementallyachievea50%reductioninstudents’costofutilizingtextbooks,
• Collection, dissemination, and implementationof textbook cost saving strategies tobephasedinfromMay2017throughDecember2017,
• Textbookcostreductionassessment,improvementstrategies,andaccountabilitybyMay2018,and
• Otherrelatedtextbookcostreductionconsiderations.
