Ralph Rackstraw, a poor seaman, loves Josephine, the Captain’s daughter. However, she is too high in the social scale for him to marry and he has a rival - Sir Joseph Porter, KCB, the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee.

Gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, learn that one of them is the rightful heir to the throne, but nobody knows which gondolier it is. They’ve recently married their sweethearts, but then they also discover that the heir was married to someone else as a baby!

Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, has fled to escape an arranged marriage. Disguised as a musician, he fell in love with Yum-Yum, who was betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko. A year later, on learning that Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting, Nanki-Poo hurries back to claim her.

ROYAL PHILHARMONICORCHESTRAWEBER Oberon OvertureGRIEG Piano ConcertoBEETHOVEN Symphony No.6, ‘Pastoral’

Conductor Eduardo PortalPiano Taek Gi Lee

Full of mythical themes, Weber’s opera Oberon dreamily unfolds with a ‘magic horn call’ to spark the imagination and open the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2015/16 season at Fairfield Halls.

The centrepiece of tonight’s programme is without doubt one of the most popular works ever written for the piano – Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Its dramatic opening leads into rich lyrical melodies and passages of show-stopping virtuosity; it will be brought to life by the winner ofthe 2014 Hastings International

Piano Concerto Competition, the young virtuoso Taek Gi Lee.

Bringing this opening concert to a close is Beethoven’s delightful Symphony No.6, known as the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony for its irresistible depictions of the charms of country life.

Conductor Alexander ShelleyPiano Boris Giltburg

Writing masterpieces from opposite sides of the world, the four composers featured on tonight’s programme were inspired by the two great cities, Paris and New York. Although each of these composers is known for their distinct styles, their music has one unifying characteristic in common: thrilling, irresistible rhythm. Prokofiev’s fiendishly difficult Piano Concerto No.3 reaches heights of almost frightening brilliance, while Gershwin’sAn American in Paris bursts with

enthusiasm and excitement. The concert also includes a homage to the bright lights of Broadway with Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley, leads this programme that balances the driving intensity with playful comedy these cities are known for.

With one of music’s greatest melodies, Sibelius’ Finlandia is both darkly thunderous and beautifully evocative. Catching audiences by surprise, the powerful opening later gives way to peaceful sweeping strings in striking Finnish style. One of today’s most talented and popular pianists, Freddy Kempf, joins the orchestra for

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3, which brims with high drama and flows into a dreamy reflectiveness. Closing the concert will be Dvorák’s Symphony No.7, considered by many to be the composer’s finest work.

The storm-tossed overture that opens tonight’s concert raises the curtain on one of the most searingly dramaticcreations from a composer describedeither as a ‘megalomaniac’ or ‘theMaster’, and whose revolutionary style took the world by storm.

Performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 will be the outstanding pianist and fan favourite, Natasha Paremski. Throughout the

piece, Rachmaninov maintains an extraordinary degree of melodic and structural spontaneity, fully reflecting the blistering speed at which the work was composed. Conductor Alexander ShelleyViolin Alexandra SoummVoice Kim Criswell

Led and curated by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley, this concert explores the light-hearted side of the roaring twenties. Brimming with humour and sprinkled with wit, this concert brings together pieces such as the Suite from Prokofiev’s absurd fantasy-opera Love for Three Oranges, the Overture to Bernstein’s comic operetta Candide and Ibert’s cheekily fast and furious Divertissement.

Joined by Alexandra Soumm, a ’23 year old who delivers playing of astonishing power from a slight frame in a way that seems to defy nature’, the orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1. Coloured by a magical, fairy-tale like quality, this piece is notable for its constraint and lyricism, as well as adelightful selection from the father of the Broadway stage, Cole Porter.

Conductor Fabien GabelViolin Tasmin Little

In no other violin concerto is the soloist’s first note, so delicately dissonant and offbeat, more beautiful than in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Performed by Classical Brit Award winner Tasmin Little, this piece demonstrates Sibelius’ passion for the violin and complete understanding of the sound of the instrument.

This spring-time concert opens with Humperdinck’s dreamy Hansel & Gretel Overture, which firmly establishes the mood of his enchanted tale. Closing the concert will be Tchaikovsky’s grand and dignified Symphony No.5. Progressing from minor to major, from melancholy to joy, this piece is filled with the untamed fury of the Cossack.
