In 2013, Terry Giegengack as-sumed the position of Director of Human and Social Services. At The Movies In March

Every Friday at 12:45

Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller — Chef Adam Jones (Cooper) had it all and lost it. The former enfant terrible of the Paris restaurant scene had earned two Michelin stars: but to land his own kitchen and that third elusive star, Jones must leave his bad habits behind and get the best of the best on his side, including beautiful sous chef Helene (Miller). This is a story about the love of food, the love between two people, and the power of second chances. “A light, entertaining and well told film.” 100 minutes.

Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway — 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (De Niro) has discovered that retirement following a successful business career isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion website run by a young and sometimes annoying career-driven woman (Hathaway). The moral: experience never grows old. “A smart, funny, and surprisingly touching film, anchored by first-rate performances from De Niro and Hathaway.” 121 minutes.

Cécile De France, Valérie Lemercier — This lively French comedy centers around Jessica, a charming young woman from the provinces who comes to Paris and lands a job waiting tables at a chic bistro on fabled Avenue Montaigne, the city’s nexus for art, music, theater and fashion. Jessica’s guileless and unintimidated engagement with her celebrated customers has a transforming effect on them—and ultimately her. A Foreign Film Festival pick. “A warm, very French but tres magnifique movie,” said Jeffrey Lyons. 106 minutes.

March 11 — Avenue Montaigne (2006) ½

Officers Wells and Kaesmann will be joined by their K-9 partners, Jagger and Maverick. They’ll speak about the Fairfield Police K-9 Unit and what its capabilities are. The K-9 cops will also demonstrate some basic obedience drills.1505: Maestra/Teacher: Revolution Through a Pencil. Tuesday, March 15, 2016, 10:00 a.m. to noon. Michelle Leigh Farrell, PhD.

Professor Farrell will present and discuss a documentary film, Maestra, which captures the testimonies of women who were volunteer teachers in the 1961 Cuban literacy campaign and tells how the experience changed their lives. Professor Farrell will also discuss some current issues in Cuba.

1506: Nigeria Revisited: My Life and Loves Abroad. Tuesday, March 15, 2016, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Catherine Onyemelukwe.

Ms. Onyemelukwe will tell her own remarkable story—that of a Midwestern American woman who joins the newly formed Peace Corps to teach in Nigeria. Her contract was for two years, but she stayed for more than two decades, marrying a native Nigerian and raising three children there.

1507: Connecticut and the Civil War. Tuesday, March 22, 2016, 10:00 a.m. to noon. Charles Allen, S.J.

Father Allen’s program will cover Connecticut’s role in slavery, before, during and after the Civil War.

1508: Inside Sing-Sing. Tuesday, March 22, 2016, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Jackie LaBatt-Simon.

How about spending a day in jail? Ms. Simon will take us on a visual and verbal tour of Sing-Sing Correctional Institute. We’ll see what a day in the life of an inmate is like. Ms. Simon will also talk about strategies that can reduce recidivism and explain what its is like to be a volunteer in a prison.

1509: Migration Through Time. Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 10:00 a.m. to noon. Colleen Kelly, PhD.

Dr. Kelly, a lifelong educator and traveler, will discuss pre-historic migrations and their causes, including climate change, political and economic conditions as well as war and personal reasons. Dr. Kelly will conclude by looking at the migrations to the United States from its founding to the present.

Each single-session course is only $5—a mere pittance. Course bro-chures will be made available at the Bigelow Center’s front desk and on-line. Because of the popularity of these mini-courses, early registration is a very good idea.

Brain Games Lunch and Learn – Tuesday, March 15 at 12:00 noon. It’s important to keep your mind active. Why not do it in a fun way while enjoying the company of friends? Come for an enjoyable, heart healthy lunch and try your luck at a variety of brain teasers. Reservations required

Is Corned Beef Really Irish?

“Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat.”

This is the subject of much debate. In Ireland, most people ate pig. Lots of bacon, lots of sausage. And potatoes. Yet corned beef was, in fact, a major export of Cork from the 17th century on. Corned beef was made popular in New York bars at lunchtime. The watering holes offered a “free lunch” to Irish construction workers who were building NYC in the early 20th century. But there’s no such thing as a free lunch: workers had to buy a few beers or shots to eat. And that, accord-ing to some, is how corned beef became known as an “Irish” food. To this day, many native Irish remain perplexed about America’s peculiar fascination with corned beef on Saint Patrick’s Day.

Under the Energize CT initiative, families on a fixed or limited income can lower the cost of their utility bills and make their homes more comfortable. Any customer who receives state heating assistance automatically qualifies for this program. For these and other qualifying families, a utility-certified technician will provide on-the-spot weatherization services. This program is a “physical checkup” of your home that includes energy efficient light bulbs, faucet aerators, low flow shower heads, door sweeps, and air and duct sealing. Following the visit, participants are also eligible for significant incentives on insulation, appliances, and windows. Presented by Elizabeth Murphy, Senior Program Administrator for The United Illuminating Company. Please call 203.256.3166 to register for this most informative free talk.

How about a trip to the Chelsea Market via the High Line Park and then a tour of New York's famed Botanical Garden?

The High Line was built in the 1930s to lift New York Central freight traffic 30 feet in the air. The elevated structure is now a beautiful 1.45-mile-long linear park. Our travel group will take an escorted tour of the park that ends at Chelsea Market which is an integral part of the High Line experience. The market occupies the original National Biscuit Company complex and is home to a delectable array of restaurants and fine food stores.

After lunch our travel group will head to the New York Botanical Garden. There, your All Garden Access Pass will allow you to explore at your leisure the 50 diverse gardens and plant collections spread over 250 acres of year-round beauty.

The date: Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Depart: 7:45 a.m. from the Bigelow Center. Return: 6:45 p.m. Cost: $81.00 per person, paid in full at registration. Tour includes: roundtrip motorcoach, guided tour of the High Line, visit to Chelsea Market, admission to New York Botanical Garden, Tours of Distinction escort, and gratuities for escort and driver.
