Turkey is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, welcoming more than 37 million visitors every year.

Turkey is a vast country of landscapes both diverse and spectacular. Uniquely positioned, both politi-cally and geographically, between East and West the influences of surrounding neighboursmake Turkey truly unique. Bordered by Greece and Bulgaria in the northwest, Iran, Armenia, Georgia to the east and Iraq and Syria to the southeast, the total size of Turkey is roughly equivalent to NSW.

Turkey is positioned across two continents with 3% of its landmass in Europe and 97% in Asia. The two continents are divided by the straits of Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles in the northwest of the county. To the north lies the Black Sea, to the south the Mediterranean, and to the West the Aegean.

There is approximately 8,000 km of coastline, ranging from the thriving Mediterranean resorts with their temperate climate perfect for yachting and swimming. The mountainous Black sea coast is lush, green, mild and damp ‐ a spectacular place to hike and see Turkey’s natural wonders from diz-zying heights. 80% of Turkey is 500m (1,640 ft) or more above sea level.

You are permitted to bring up to US$5,000 of Turkish Lira into the country.

Banks & ATMsBanks are plentiful in Turkey, but with the increas-ing number of ATMs, you can easily go your whole trip without entering one. There are 24‐hour cash dispensers, accepting credit cards and bank cards with PINs, on every street corner. The major bank, Isbank, has over 1,000 ATMs across over Turkey. Machines usually offer a choice of languages in which to conduct your transaction, and dispense Turkish Lira.

Travellers’ ChequesThese can be cashed at the foreign exchange desks of banks, and at post offices. But it is useful to bring a supply of foreign currency, either US dol-lars or Euros. To cash travellers’ cheques you will need your passport. As it can be costly and cum-bersome to exchange travellers’ cheques, we do not recommend them.

Credit cards and Debit CardsMost major cards, including Visa, Switch, Amex and Mastercard, are accepted by many shops, res-taurants, hotels and petrol stations.

Foreign Exchange OfficesDoviz are usually the best places to make a straight exchange of foreign currency, almost always offering a better rate for cash than the banks. US Dollars and Euros can attract a better rate than less frequently traded currencies. These offices rarely accept travellers’ cheques.

TaxesTaxes, chiefly GST (KDV in Turkish) are included in the prices of some goods and services at varying rates. You may notice them itemised separately on a bill or receipt.Some stores offer GST‐free shopping for tourists living outside the European Union (look out for signs in the window).

There are three main climatic zones in Turkey:The Marmara (which includes Istanbul), Aegean and Mediterranean regions. These have a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures rise the further south you go.

The Black Sea regionEnjoys warm summers, mild winters and relatively high rainfall throughout the year.The Central and Eastern Anatolian regions (includ-ing Ankara) Has more extreme hot, dry summers and cold winters.

Witnessing a festival or holiday will give you an insight into the joyous and hospitable nature the Turkish people. Religious holidays are linked to the lunar calendar and move back 11 or 12 days each year. Secular festivals also move to coincide with weekends and precise dates can change annu-ally. During these major holidays, shops and busi-nesses are closed, though local shops will usually reopen on the second or third day.

Shopping in Turkey is a delightful and sometimes even educational experience! High‐fashion clothes can be purchased cheaply, as Turkey has a boom-ing cotton industry and has become a cheap source of Western manufacture. Turkish leather is well known, but clothing and bags are usually higher quality than shoes.Look carefully at the quality of what you are buy-ing, as it can vary enormously. It is hard to find a good bargain in the tourist areas. Try to shop in the more out‐of‐the‐way villages and towns, where you will probably find better quality at a more reason-able price.

Where to ShopTurkey offers many different shopping experiences, from glitzy to more gritty. For a unique insight into Turkey’s shopping culture, visit the local bazaar. The amazing Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, a veritable labyrinth of shops and workshops, sells every imaginable product.

Excellent local weekly street markets, which are ideal for buying Turkey’s wonderful fresh produce, if you are self‐catering. Flea markets can also be found there.

You can also find vast user‐friendly shopping cen-tres, like American shopping malls, complete with parking, supermarket, cinemas, food courts and international designer labels.

What to BuyExcellent textiles, clothing, carpets, pottery, metal-work, semi‐precious and precious stones and jewel-lery, leather and glass can be found in Turkey.

Carpets & KilimsYou can’t leave Turkey without buying a tradition-al Turkish carpet or kilim. A carpet is a hand‐made rug with a raised pile, a kilim is flat woven. They can be made from cotton, wool, silk or a mixture.Designs and techniques are regional. You do not need to be an expert to buy a good carpet, but it helps. Within Turkey, certain places are carpet trading centres. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is a renowned carpet trading area, and Cappadocia in central Anatolia is another, as dealers travel there to buy and makers to sell.

This evening, you will be briefed by your leader and local tour guide at the hotel then you will enjoy a group dinner.

DAy 2 SAT iSTAnBulOld City Walking TourA full day tour to explore Istanbul with our guide. This fascinating city bridges Europe and Asia and, under the name Byzantium and Constantinople was the capital of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, until, in 1453 it became the third and last Capital of the Ottomans. Visit the Blue Mosque, renowned for its six minarets and the beautiful Iznik tiles whose dominant shade of blue gives the mosque its name. Hagia Sophia is a World Heritage site - built in 537 AD and to this day an archi-tectural marvel which was built as a basilica, was converted to a mosque and is now a museum. The Hippodrome nearby was where political, cultural, and sports activities took place during Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times. The day will end with a visit to the Islamic Arts Museums.

DAy 3 SuniSTAnBulSpice Market, Bosphorus Cruise & St Chora Today we will visit the Spice Market (Egyptian Bazaar) with our guide. Afterwards, discover Istanbul’s natural beauty and rich his-toric heritage with a cruise on the Bosphorus. Glide past the mina-

rets and palaces, stone fortresses and wooden Ottoman mansions of the only city in the world that bridges Europe and Asia. In the afternoon, we will visit St. Chora, (Kariye Muzesi), with its dazzling mosaics and frescoes - considered to be among the finest Byzantine works in the world, dating from the 14th century. They are in excellent condition having been plastered over and not discovered until the 1940’s.

DAy 4 MOn iSTAnBul Walking Ottoman TourIn the morning we will explore Topkapi Palace, the opulent residence of the Ottoman sul-tans overlooking the Bosphorus between the end of the 15th and the first half of the 19th centu-ries. You will discover why it is renowned for its treasures and jeweled captivity of its infamous Harem. Later, we will take you to the Grand Bazaar, the world’s largest covered market, with cen-turies of history.

DAy 5 TuE CAPPADOCiAIn the morning we fly out to Nevsehir in central Anatolia - Cappadocia. We will start exploring the area by a visit to Kaymakli Underground City, followed by a break at the most picturesque spot of Cappadocia, the Goreme Valley. We’ll break for lunch and in the afternoon we will visit a ceramics factory and a carpet making workshop, and learn about traditional crafts and designs.

DAy 6 WED CAPPADOCiA Walking TourOptional balloon trip early morn-ing. A full day tour to explore the rugged beauty of this fantastic

region. The winding landscape is decorated at every twist and turn with a maze of cones, slopes and fairy chimneys, products of centuries of windand rain. Walk in the Red Valley, followed by lunch and in the afternoon visit Goreme open-air museum, where churches were carved into the stone between the 4th-13th centuries and are decorated with frescoes that provide a record of early Christianity. Free afternoon in Urgup town.[optional evening for Whirling Dervishes]

DAy 7 THu CAPPADOCiA Walking TourToday, we will explore South Cappadocia. We will visit Soganli Valley, and a small village amongst the rock faces of fairy chimneys. People here still live in these caves and bake their bread in the village bakery which can be seen on tour, children play around the valleys on a donkey back or welcoming tourists to their village, trying to sell a doll for a few dollars to make a living.[optional evening for Cultural Turkish Night]

DAy 8 Fri CAPPADOCiAWalking TourIhlara Valley is about 100 kms south of Urgup, It is a natural beauty 14 kms in length, with a little stream running through the valley. Rock churches can be vis-ited. We will walk 4-5 kms down the valley and lunch beside the river. Driving back we will visit the Agzikarahan Caravanserai. These structures were once used as ‘camel stops’ or ‘motels’ in the ancient times where Silk Road used to be in use.

DAy 9 SAT KOnyAKonya: the capital of the Sultanate of Rumi and the holy city of the Seljuk Turks. We will stop at the largest and most well preserved Caravanserai of Sultanhan on our drive to Konya. We will visit the Museum of Mevlana, the famous mystic and philosopher who founded the Sufi Order of the Whirling Dervishes in the 13th century. A visit to Karatay Medrese this afternoon will end our day in Konya.

DAy 10 Sun AnTAlyAFirst we will have a leisurely drive to Catalhoyuk which is the site of a very large Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlement in south-ern Anatolia, which existed from approximately 7500 BC to 5700 BC. It is the largest and oldest Neolithic site ever found to date. Our drive will continue through the Taurus Mountains to Antalya, overlooking the Turquoise depths of the Mediterranean. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAy 11 MOn AnTAlyAFrom Antalya we will drive to Aspendos, where the 2C AD thea-tre is the best preserved Roman theatre in Asia Minor. Continue to Perge, and visit this other Hellenist-Roman ancient city with its stadium, colonnaded street and theatre. Visit nearby Side before our drive back to Antalya.

DAy 12 TuEFrEE DAy in AnTAlyAAntalya is a beautiful city on Mediterranean coast of Turkey, today will be a free day at leisure. You can spend the whole day on a beach, or art galleries, or simply explore the old city. We recommend visiting the museum, a small gem which gives invalu-

able insight into the sites we have visited. Or stroll in the narrow streets of the picturesque old town (kaleici) with its narrow streets and typical wooden houses over-looking the marina, to discover the Hadrian Gate, the Fluted Minaret, the Truncated Minaret, and Hidirlik Tower.

DAy 13 WEDPAMuKKAlE, HiErAPOliSThrough beautiful countryside, we drive to Pamukkale, a unique natural site. Visit the “Cotton Castle” formation where the hot waters, leaving their limestone deposits, have created an unreal landscape with petrified water-falls and basins. Hierapolis is an ancient Roman health spa whose well preserved necropolis is one of the largest in the ancient world. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAy 14 THuAPHrODiSiAS AnD EPHESuSIn the morning, drive first to Aphrodisias, the ancient city dedi-cated to Aphrodite, the goddess of Beauty, Love and Fertility, also famous for its school of sculp-ture. Visit the stadium, which is the best preserved in Anatolia, and the Temple of Aphrodite, the Tetrapylon, the Theatre, the Museum. Continue through the plain of the Meander River to reach the imposing city of Ephesus, one of the most famous and fascinating in the ancient world. Walk down the Marble Street, see the Agora,the Odeon, the Nympheaum of Trajan, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Celsius Library. Walk through the Roman villas (opt) and see how the well-to-do lived. Drive to Selcuk for overnight stay.

DAy 15 FriPriEnE, MilETuS AnD DiDyMA TOurSDrive to Priene, in the morning, which was one of the most active ports of the Ionian Confederacy. Continue to Miletus, where you will visit the site which includes the Theatre, the Baths of Faustina, the Gymnasium, the Nymphaeum... Miletus was connected by a Sacred Road to the sanctuary of Didyma where you will discover the colos-sal Temple of Apollo where crowds of pilgrims came to consult the oracle. Lunch during sightseeing. Drive back Selcuk.

DAy 16 SATPErgAMuM, TrOy, CAnAKKAlEIn the morning, depart for Pergamum, the capital of the Attalid Dynasty. Visit the ancient city where parchment was invent-ed: the library which contained 200,000 volumes, and the impres-sive theatre built on the hillside which provides a wonderful panorama of the surroundings in the lower part of the ancient city. Also visit the Asclepion, a sanctu-ary and a healing center dedicated to the god of healing, Asclepius. Continue to the ancient city of Troy whose history covers a period of about 3,400 years with nine layers of settlements (Troy I to IX). King Priam’s glorious city, which can be found in the Iliad, Homer’s epic poem, was immortalized through mythological characters: Helen, Menelaus, Paris, Agamemnon, Achilles, Hector...and the legendary Trojan Wooden Horse, a recon-struction of which stands at the entrance of the site. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Canakkale located on the Asian side of the Dardanelles.

DAy 17 SungAlliPOli, iSTAnBulIn the morning, cross the Strait of the Dardanelles by ferry. Continue to Gallipolli Peninsula where the ANZAC landed. Visit the bat-tlefields, trenches and memorials. Continue to Istanbul.

DAy 18 MOnFrEE DAy in iSTAnBulFree day at leisure, suggestions: revisit the sites and sights; visit the many museums in Istanbul; cross the Galata Bridge and visit the Galata Tower for panoramic views of the city; or visit the Suleymaniye Mosque.

Some of the churches contain inscriptions giving the exact dates of con-struction and thus have provided scholars with valuable clues to help date other churches in Cappadocia. DAy 5 WED SElçuK, SArDiS, PErgAMuM, KuCuKKuyuIn the morning, travel to the capital of the Kingdom of Lydia, Sardis. In this Pactolus Valley city famous for inventing coinage and its wealthy King Croesus, visit the Bath;;Gymnasium Complex, the marble-paved Synagogue (3rd c. AD), and the Temple of Artemis. Proceed to Pergamum, capital of the Attalid dynasty. After lunch, explore this ancient city where parchment was invented. Ride a cable car to the upper city to take in the ruins of the Acropolis: agoras, temples, palaces, library (200,000 volumes), and the foun-dation of the Zeus Altar (now in Berlin). DAy 9 Sun iSTAnBulIn the morning, visit the Blue Mosque, recognizable by its six minarets. Built between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmet I, the interior is decorated with some 21,000 blue Iznik tiles. Visit the Hippodrome, where political, cultural, and athletic activities took place during Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times. Visit the imposing Hagia Sophia, which marked the apogee of Byzantine Emperor Justinian’s reign. Thereafter there is the possibility of an optional Cruise on the Bosporus, separating Asia from Europe and connecting the Marmara Sea to the Black Sea. We visit the Helles Memorial to the missing, the Turkish Gun battery and Seddulbahir the site of the grave of Doughty-Wylie. We then visit the British sector where the SS River Clyde landed the men of 29th divi-sion on V beach, the Lancashire landing site where the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers were awarded six VC`s before breakfast, X Beach where HMS implacable landed, Krithia vineyard, Krithia war museum and nearby Redoubt cemetery. This visit requires some walking as the roads to the beaches are not accessible by coach. Overnight Canakkale

At X Beach, we see where HMS Implacable landed the 2nd Royal Fusiliers before visiting Krithia vineyard, Krithia war museum and nearby Redoubt Cemetery. Overnight Canakkale

DAy 5 Sun AnzAC COvE (rEMEMBrAnCE DAy)After breakfast we continue our tour of the 25th April landing sites as we move North to ANZAC Beach, where the Australians and New Zealanders landed. We spend the morning walking along the landing beach, visit the nearby battle-fields, military cemetery and preserved trenches. After a short memorial service at ANZAC Cove at 11 am we continue on to visit Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair Memorials, the Nek, original trenches and tunnels, Johnston’s Jolly and the Gallipoli Museum. The most famous exhibit being the solid gold funerary mask of King Tutankhamun, made of solid gold and weighing 11kg. DAy 4 TuE KEKOvAA short cruise along the Mediterranean coast to the ruins at Kekova � the Sunken City. Sailing to Gokkaya Bay to spend the night.

DAy 5 WED SiMEnAClimb up to the castle on Simena for a spectacular view of the ancient city. Out in the bay, overlooked by a theatre carved into the rock, a single Lycian sarcophagus sits on its pedestal in the water. The night is spent in the wide bay surrounded by green hills, at nearby Ucagiz.

DAy 1 North Part Of Cappadocia TourArrive in Cappadocia by overnight bus or early morning flight. Upon arrival start the day visit-ing Devrent Valley, also known as ‘Imagination Valley’, this is the most surreal-looking land-scape. Your next stop will be Pashabagi called also the Monks Valley because Christian her-mits chose to locate hermit cells and churches in these three-headed pinnacles symbolic of the Holy Trinity. DAy 1 CAPPADOCiA, nEMruT MOunTAinPick up from Hotel in the morning and hit the road for Kahta. Passing Kayseri city en route, the 13th century Seljuk Caravanserai ‘Karatayhan’ will be visited. The next stop is Pinarbasi for a short tea break. Then keep driving to Tekir for Lunch. After taking pictures of the gorgeous scenery of the Tekir Valley the drive to Kahta will continue. Check-in to Hotel at the slopes of the Nemrut Mountain. Dinner and overnight.

DAy 2 nEMruT -HArrAnA very early departure in the morning is awaiting you in order to view the sunrise at the summit of Mt.Nemrut. Drive by Car as far as the road will allow you after which the climb will be by walk for apprx. 25 minutes till you reach the summit. Once there watch the beautiful sun rise between the colossal size statues and heads of the kings and Gods. After sun rise, your guide will give information about Commagene Kingdom and the statues while walking around and taking pictures. Then drive back to the hotel for breakfast. Underground Cities in Cappadocia. Derinkuyu is excavated to a depth of approximately 85 m. It contains all the usual rooms found in an underground city (stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries etc.). Proceed to Ihlara Valley. You will walk about 4 km along the river in the valley exploring the hidden churches. At the end of your walk lunch will be served at Belisirma Village by the river. On the way back visit Selime Monastery, carved out the rock by Christian monks in the 13th century. The size of the church makes a visit here astonishing. Stop briefly at Yaprakhisar Panorama the spot where famous movie Star wars was shot, con-tinue to Agzikarahan Caravanserai bulit by the Seldjuk Turks in the 13th Century. Overnight in Cave Hotel.

BOOKing COnDiTiOnS AnD OTHEr iMPOrTAnT inFOrMATiOnTour Prices: are based on costs, charges, tariffs, rates, prices, taxes, levies, and exchange rates as at 1 December 2011. Should the total price increase by more than 10%, passengers will have the right to cancel their tour within 7 days of notifica-tion of the surcharge without penalty. No surcharges in respect of cost or currency fluctuations will be made once payment for the deposit of your land tour is received. This does not apply to fuel surcharges and any taxes, charges or levies imposed by any Government or their agencies.

Children Policy: Children 5-12 years of age (at start of tour) must share a room with two adults (adults pay appropriate twin room rate). Please see itinerary of your choice for the discount per child, (LAND only). In most tours children traveling with two full-paying adults have discount based on their age (from 0-6 years = free, 7-12 years – 50% of the appropriate rate. Certain exclusions may apply to this discount.

Tour Participation: Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Passengers with disabilities are welcome on Fairy Chimneys Travel tours providing they are accompanied by an able-bodied companion and do not require special assistance from Fairy Chimneys Travel personnel. Fairy Chimneys Travel reserves the right to refuse to carry anyone if it is felt the individual cannot cope with the requirements of coach tour travel and who may require services and facili-ties that Fairy Chimneys Travel cannot guarantee will be available. You agree to not hold Fairy Chimneys Travel responsible for any decision made by them or any other provider to refuse to carry you, provide facilities or accommodation to you or to provide any service to you.

Itinerary Variations: Fairy Chimneys Travel constantly strives to improve tour itiner-aries and features. If such improvements can be made, or unforeseen circumstances beyond our control make changes necessary – we reserve the right to vary itineraries and to substitute hotels. At certain peak periods duplicate departures may operate, and sometimes in reserve order in which case hotels may vary from those stated on the itinerary.

Tour Cancellation: Fairy Chimneys Travel reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule any tour departure in accordance with operating requirements or circumstances beyond its control.

Fairy Chimneys Travel is not responsible for any other travel arrangements affected due to our cancellations.

Direct flights from London to Istanbul take three and a half hours.How can I get to Turkey?Between the major airlines, over 15 direct flights from Australia to Turkey are offered every week. This involves one stopover in Singapore, then a direct flight to Istanbul.I’ve heard that Turkey is a very beautiful country, what makes it unique?From its landscape and climate, to its food, people and rich history, Turkey is a country of diversity and splendour. From a relax-ing paddle in the Mediterranean to a glimpse of ancient Ottoman architecture, Turkey has many options to create your ideal holiday.I have not heard of Fairy Chimneys Travel, are you new?Fairy Chimneys Travel was founded in 2001 and is Australia’s only specialist Turkey tour and travel company. TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND LUGGAGEWhat travel documents will I need?Australian citizens must have a valid passport, valid for six months beyond the date of return to Australia. You will need to present your passport to board your return flight.Carry your passport with you at all times and do NOT pack it in your suitcase. As a precaution, make a copy of the photo page and pack it in a separate location. This will help with replacement, if you lose it while travelling.How much luggage should I bring?As little as possible! Fairy Chimneys Travel recommend you tour with one piece of luggage, plus one carry-on bag. Remember if you are travelling by ferry, hydrofoil, inter-island airline, or rental car, luggage space is quite limited.What clothing should I bring?In the summer months (May-September), bring casual, lightweight clothing. A shawl, sweater or light jacket is recommended for cooler evenings. In the spring/autumn (March-April, October-November), a wardrobe that allows layering for warmth is best. Lightweight woollens and a raincoat with zip-out lining are suggested.Bring comfortable walking shoes. If you will be hiking, over-the-ankle, Vibram-soled hiking boots are required.Jeans and slacks are acceptable, but you may wish to pack suitable clothing for evening events. Some restaurants in metropoli-tan areas require a tie and jacket for men.Are there any dress requirements at monasteries or mosques?In Turkey, the faithful are called to prayer five times a day. So avoid visits during prayer time. When visiting a mosque, visitors must remove their shoes and show respect. At churches and monasteries, women are required to wear long dresses or skirts and sleeved blouses (covering the shoulders and knees). Men are required to wear slacks and a shirt.Will I be able to find a Laundromat?Laundromats are not so accessible to travellers, so bring laundry detergent and be prepared to wash clothes in your sink. HEALTH REQUIREMENTSWhat are the health requirements - do I need any vaccination?No vaccinations are required for Australian citizens travelling to Turkey. It is always prudent to check with your regular doctor regarding your health before you travel.Can I get my medications while travelling?You may not find the same medication in Turkey, or be able to fill your doctor’s prescription. So bring enough prescription medi-cation for your whole time away. If you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses, bring along an extra pair for backup.Can I drink the water?Bottled water is recommended.

CURRENCY, MONEY & TIPPINGWhat is the currency of Turkey?The currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira. Since exchange rates fluctuate daily, check your local newspaper or contact your bank for the most current rate.Should I exchange my money before I go?It is not necessary to change money in Australia before you travel. Nor do we recommend it, because you lose dollar value in the exchange. There are exchange banks in all major airports and you can change money at hotels, train stations, banks, and post offices.You may also be able to withdraw cash from Turkish ATMs with your Visa, Master Card or American Express automatic teller machine (ATM) card.What about tipping?Waiters, drivers, hotel personnel, bellboys, bus drivers, and guides are usually tipped. Eating establishments include a 15% tip on the bill. It is also customary to leave an extra 5-10% for the assistant waiters who do odd jobs around the table. Baggage handlers expect a tip of $2 per bag. On both organised and private tours, guides are customarily tipped $10-$15 per person per day; drivers are tipped $5-$7 per person per day.
