First Friday Convocations The practice of First Fridays in the Catholic Church dates back to the 17th century to a French nun by the name of St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, and it had to do with going to church on 9 consecutive 1st Fridays of the month. In doing so, and offering prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it was a way to help cover the sins of others, like helping to pick up someone’s yard or garage or room.

A convocation (from the Latin convocare meaning "to call/come together", a translation of the Greek ἐκκλησία ekklēsia) is a group of people formally assembled for a special purpose, mostly ecclesiastical or academic. Convocations have been used throughout history by the Church to enlighten the minds of people about a broad set of topics.

Here at Corpus we have instituted First Fridays for our Middle School students, and we are going to use these Fridays in much the same way. At the beginning of each month, when Friday rolls around, the Middle School will be called together (convocare) in the Commons for a time for us to learn something that will better all of us as a group. We will look at leadership and community and what Christianity can offer us in these and many areas of our living.

By our meeting and our offering prayer, we hope to help each other, by learning about our living together, and learning how we can make our hearts and the hearts of others more in tune with what we are called to as disciples of Jesus.

Our September First Friday Convocation was led by Fr. Mick on the topic of Conversation. Fr. Mick talked about the best way to connect with people and build quality relationships through the act and the art of making conversation. Next week, our second First Friday Convocation will be led by Coach Ray Bechard, Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Kansas and parishioner at Corpus Christi. Coach Bechard will be visiting with the middle school students about Leadership.

Flu Season Is Here! Flu season is upon us and all of us here at Corpus Christi want to keep your children and the adults who care for them healthy. The first reported case has been reported at LMH. The single best way to protect against influenza is to get vaccinated each year. Students are encouraged to practice proper hygiene and hand washing. Please help us by reinforcing these practices at home! Thank you for everything you do to help us keep your child safe and healthy!
