Dear Dayna, I would like to congratulate you, and your colleagues, on a great Volume 1, Issue 1 of Falcon News. I have been a “fan” of newspapers, ever since I was in elementary school and a teacher asked us to peruse a newspaper and “find all the new words”, with more than six letters, we could find and bring the list to class. I was “hooked” after that. In fact, like you, I was an editor of a school newspaper when I was in 7th grade. I think that newspapers, as a medium of communication, continue to play a pivotal role in the exchange of ideas. They also serve as educational tools and I think Falcon News is no exception. I look forward to your future issues, on line, and I eagerly await to read of ideas as to how the Friends of Maui Waena Intermediate School (MWIS) can advance and nurture the culture and community of learning at MWIS. Again, congratulations and... Aloha nui,John A. H. Tomoso (Member of Friends Of MWIS)

! The Maui County Fair brings fun, food, games, and rides to our island during the four days it is hosted at the War Memorial Stadium, but during the recent years, a new addition has sparked the interest of technology in the minds of students all over Maui: Robotics.! On Saturday, October 2, students from schools such as Iao Intermediate School, King Kekaulike High School, Molokai High School, Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kalani High School, and Lahainaluna High School gathered at the Baldwin High School Gym for the 2nd Annual Maui VEX Competition. Maui Waena Intermediate School also participated and sent out two teams to compete.! The competition took all day. The first event was the pre-elimination round, where teams competed against each with out any consequences in defeat. The Maui Waena Intermediate School Team 2169B (a.k.a Green Team) had four straight victories and one tie in their five rounds of the pre-elimination round. The Maui Waena Intermediate School Team 2169A (a.k.a Purple Team) had straight losses but would make it up later in the second event.! In the double-elimination, (the second event of the competition), 1st-10th place teams were able to choose two teams as their alliance, the first place team in the pre-elimination round choosing their alliance partner first. Team 2169B (as result of their third place ranking) picked Baldwin High School as their alliance partner. They chose Kalani High School as their second alliance partner. 22nd place 2169A was picked by Farrington High School and the Hawaii Baptist Academy as their third alliance partner.! The “Green” teamʼs alliance competed first against the 7th place alliance composed of Kamehameha Schools Maui, King Kekaulike High School, and Nanakuli High School. by a late score, the team barely escaped with a narrow victory: 24-23. They later on won the second round to win the series. The “Purple” team and their alliance had a bye due to uneven amount of teams which meant that they would play in the semifinals.! In the semifinals, the Green teamʼs alliance faced team 2443 Blue Thunder from Maui High School and their alliance (Waialua High School and Baldwin High School Team B). They narrowly missed a victory and would eventually lose the series to get 3rd/4th place (there was no definite 3rd or 4th place because there was no 3rd/4th place round). The “Purple” team and their alliance, however, would crush their semifinal opponents and defeat the Blue Thunder alliance to win the championships. They automatically received free entry to the VEX World Championships which would be held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Congratulations Maui Waena Team 2169A and we wish you the best of luck during the VEX World Championships!

Dear Chloe, I have a friend but my parents donʼt like me hanging out with her because sheʼs a bad influence on me. Should i hang out with her or not?Sincerly, Maggie

Well, Maggie I honestly think you should talk to your friend about how you think sheʼs a bad influence and if she doesnʼt understand then i would just listen to your parents. But just know this is only my opinion.Love, Chloe

Chloe’s CornerDear Chloe,I have a boyfriend but he acts like we arenʼt going out when heʼs with his friends. Should I talk to him about it or should I just break up with him?Sincerly, Sandy

Well, Sandy I think you should definitely talk to him about it because you never know if he will understand and stop acting like that in front of his friends. If he doesnʼt understand then, I would break up with him.But just know this is only my opinion.Love, Chloe

Dear Chloe,

I think my teacher hates me. Sheʼs always strict and yells at me. So do you think she hates me?Sincerly,Talisha

Well, Talisha I really donʼt think she hates you. A teacher is strict because she wants you to succeed in school. She also probably doesnʼt want the class to act up. But just know this is only my opinion.Love, Chloe

Edison Training Reviews

! When you hear Halo: Reach, you think of the Spartans, the Elites, and one of the greatest multiplayer experiences ever. For those of you who donʼt know about Halo, heres your time to know. Halo reach takes place right before Halo 1 on the planet Reach. You are Noble Six, a spartan, in Noble team. ! Your job is to protect Reach from the Covenant(aka.the aliens). During the whole game you will be amazed by the graphics, gameplay, and blasting enemies. The missions youʼll go through in the campaign range from a military base to a frozen wasteland. There are a lot of weapons and vehicles in this game ranging from a simple pistol to monstrous tank. Thereʼs a gun and vehicle for everyone. The gameʼs greatness comes mostly from the multiplayer experience you get. ! If you have an Xboxlive youʼll love halo reaches multiplayer from playing team death to just playing around with your friends and even creating your own map.Halo reach has something for everyone. If you haven't already, I recommend picking up halo reach.

The movie "Furry Vengeance" is about a man named Dan Sanders who is hoping to

make enough money to live happily with his son and wife.

They relocate to a remotearea of Oregon. Since he

agreed with his boss to cut down forests to build houses,

animals go out to get him. The main actors and actresses and their

characters that they play are: Brendan Fraser (Dan

Sanders), Brooke Shields(Tammy Sanders), Matt

Prokop (Tyler Sanders), and Ken Jeong (Neal Lyman).

The moral of this movie is to take care of nature. I think

that this movie was hilarious because the pranks the animals played on Dan

Sanders made me laugh-out-loud! Also I think that this movie was a good family movie because my

family and I enjoyed watching it and it was appropriate for

my brother and I towatch, so my parents were glad about that! So go and

watch the "Furry Vengeance".You can buy it on DVD or rent it. I hope you enjoy the movie!

! Thomas Edison had some bright ideas, and MWIS teachers who attended the Edison training during September 29 through October 2 in Los Angeles, California, came back with their share of bright ideas.! Among the teachers that attended this training included Ms. Cajudoy, Ms. Eno, Ms. Ham, Ms. Korotsky, Ms. Sylva, and Ms. Wigger. Our principal, Mr. Yap also attended the training.! At what Ms. Korotsky says was “a leadership conference to help the schools figure out their priorities”, she and the other teachers found out that other teachers from all over the nation were trying to answer the same question as theirs. “How do I help my students learn better?” Ms. Wigger learned about great technology and hands on manipulatives. According to Mr. Yap, he learned that Edison was a great benefit and help for the school.! The different teachers had different ideas about what it was for. As you already know, Ms. Korotsky thinks of the event as a leadership conference to help the schools figure out their priorities. Ms. Wigger believes it was so everyone could be on the same page for the school to follow. A different perspective was from Mr. Yap. He thinks it was to work with the school team and find strategies for the students who are falling behind to reach our goal.! Although they were teachers, they learned many unique things. Hopefully, our education will be more supported.

Wai’anae ! Every school, teacher, and student involved in digital media knows by now that the Waiʼanae High School digital media program is the most advanced and by far, unsurpassed in the state of Hawaii and one of the top digital media programs in the United States. Searider Productions, first started by Candy Suiso and now led by lead instructor John Allen III, has won numerous awards, local, statewide, and national. Six students from Maui Waena got to experience their teachings from a workshop held at their school on Oahu during the Fall Break.! The workshop was divided into two sections: animation and graphics was one side and journalism and feature stories was the other side. In the animation and graphics side, students got to learn the fundamentals of Flash and Photoshop. These students were the ones experienced in journalism or had taken the journalism/ feature story classes before. Flash is a program used to make 2D animations. Photoshop is used to create different things such as logos, cards, banners, etc. On the last day, they also learned the basics of Maya, a 3D animation program. Victoria Gaxiola, one of the students of the animation side, said “Going on this trip was awesome, I learned a lot” All in all, they had a great time, both a fun and beneficial experience. ! Newcomers headed to the journalism and feature story side. They learned storytelling elements, how to tell a story, NAT. sound, how to turn stories from good to great, and many more lessons to expand their knowledge in the field of digital media. Dayna Yamasaki was a student that attended the journalism side of the workshop. “This was a really great experience, Iʼve learned so much more than what I expected”, she said on the subject of journalism. It provided students new to digital media with ideas of careers in that particular field. Thank you Waianae High Schoolʼs Searider Productions for allowing us to have a great time at your workshop!

! Although it is only the first year of the creation of Falcon Productions, we are starting out strong. We are planning to do many things such as creating a monthly school newspaper, a monthly news-show, and many competitions, local, statewide, and national. One national competition we will be competing in is the STN Convention. Students and teachers from schools all over the nation will participate in this event to be held in Disneyworld at Orlando, Florida.! Our school will send 8-12 students from the media club, selected by merit and commitment to attend this event. At the STN Competition, the students will participate in 3 days of pressured work. There will be many things due in short amounts of time. We will be learning in a competitive environment.! After the competition, the fun begins. We will be going to Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot, Full Sail University (one of the most recognized digital media universities in the world), and other tourist attractions. The STN Convention will be one of the most memorable learning experiences for the students that go.! We would love donations and support for our upcoming trip. Please contact Ms. Jennifer Suzuki at her email: [email protected] or her phone number: 808-385-2942.

STN Beach Clean Up! On October 17, 2010, two students (Brandon Garalde and Dayna Yamasaki) and two teachers (Mr. Bayez and Ms. Anderson) attended the beach clean up hosted by, Community Work Day Program, at Kahului Harbor. They all worked together as a team, no matter how much people they had. Since cigarette buds are the biggest pollution on Earth, Dayna Yamasaki & Brandon Garalde picked up many cigarette butts, 700 to be exact. While Ms. Anderson had collected plastics, Mr. Bayez found cat bones! This opportunity was a great experience to actually realize what kind of world we live in and, know how special it is.
