It was a really great time, with approximately 400 residents in attendance. The Board is also hearing numerous concerns about the safety of our streets because of all the cars that are regularly parked in our roads. The roads are reduced to one-lane passage when a car is parked in the street and there are several places where the street parking is so congested that it is dangerous to drive; this could especially be a problem if emergency vehicles need to make it through the area. reCyCle yarD wasteResidents of Falcon Ranch could benefit the community, as well as their own lawns and pocketbooks, with one simple change in lawn maintenance.

If you or your lawn service currently bag grass clippings, simply leaving the clippings to work down into the lawn will make a huge difference in the amount of waste our community puts into the landfill each year. It will also help conserve water, because the clippings will work to maintain moisture in the soil. Both of these benefits will save money in the long run. Moreover, it is estimated that lawns that are naturally fertilized with grass clippings require 25% less fertilizer - resulting in even more savings to you!

Grass clippings and finely chopped leaves add vital nutrients and organic matter to the lawn, thus improving the health of the lawn. It isn’t necessary to use a mulching mower; just mow one inch when grass reaches four inches tall. The clippings won’t be noticed and will break down within a week.

Hoa boarD PositioNs availableAt the annual Falcon Ranch Homeowners meeting to be held in September, homeowners will be electing two HOA Board members. If you are interested in serving on the HOA Board or would like more information, please contact property manager Cindy Nghiem at [email protected] or call the Customer Care Center at 713-329-7171.

CommuNiCatiNg witH PmgIf your mailing address changes, please notify PMG via the Customer Care Line immediately. All correspondence from the property man-agement company is sent to the resident’s mailing address on file. The mailing address does not change unless residents contact PMG

SALES TAX HOLIDAYAUGUST 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes

on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-

away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the

sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most cloth-

ing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100

from sales and use taxes,

which could save shoppers

about $8 on every $100

they spend. Go to www.

window.state.tx.us/tax-

tx98_490.html for details

on included items and

Having a sick or injured child can be very scary. The last thing you want to do is wait hours in the Emergency Room not knowing if they’ll be alright.

If you or your family member has a non-life-threatening injury or illness, such as an ear infection, cold, fever, cut, bruise, sprain, or even a broken bone, we’re here to see you seven days a week, offering the convenience of a walk-in clinic with the expertise of an emergency room. The center offers in-house X-ray, lab and EKG services to our patients. Our goal is to get patients in and out within an hour.

CRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADEWritten by Melissa M. Williams

an Iggy the Iguana Book

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.

KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES RECOGNIZES OUTGOING MEMBERS, WECOMES NEW MEMBERS

During a special meeting following the May 21st regular meeting, Katy

ISD’s Board of Trustees recognized the dedication and community

service of its two outgoing members Robert Shaw and Neal Howard.

Retiring board member Shaw has served on the Board of Trustees

since 1997 and outgoing member Howard has served since 2009.

New Board members Bryan Michalsky and Charles Griffin were

sworn-in and new officer seats were elected. New officers for the

2012 - 2013 school year are as follows: Rebecca Fox, President;

Joe Adams, Vice President; Henry Dibrell, Secretary; Bryan Michal-

sky, Treasurer; Charles Griffin, Sergeant-at-Arms; Terry Huckaby,

Member and Bill Proctor, Member.

Katy ISD Board of Trustees meetings included a work-study meeting

on June 11th and a regular meeting on June 18th. Visit the School

Board page at www.katyisd.org for more information about the Katy

ISD Board of Trustees.

KATY ISD BEGINS BROADCASTING BOARD MEETINGS

ed in its entirety and available for online viewing the following day.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility

requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting

in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change

from the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for el-

ementary students and approximately one mile for junior high and

high school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided

for students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between

home and school, as well as special needs bus routes.

Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be

eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21% of

the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD Trans-

portation Department began building bus routes in June and will have

specific routing information available for parents sometime in August. The district will announce specific dates once they become available.

The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experi-

encing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number

of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements.

Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days

in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to

cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better

meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route

management, including driver training and driver support in issues

involving student management.

“The change in transportation services comes after extensive review

of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a

heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high

amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver ab-

sences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison

to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances

remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts

require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

the state. They prepared a presentation and were given only five minutes to speak to the committee members, which was comprised of district Superintendents from throughout Texas. Having only a limited amount of time to present their topic, Keith and Dominick focused on some of the highlights about high school bowling.

mittee commended Keith and Dominick on making such a great pre-sentation and asked several questions, such as how many students are on each of their bowling teams; which areas currently have the most concentration of high school bowlers; how much are they currently paying for a participation fee and what are there averages, to name just a few. Each committee member was provided with a copy of Keith and Dominick’s presentation along with a brochure from USBC, which discusses a little more about High School bowling.

Karen Miller, the Executive Director of the Texas Bowling Centers Association, had also filed a proposal with the Texas U.I.L. to add bowling as a new U.I.L. sport and was also in attendance at the meeting as a representative of the Texas High School Bowling Club. She provided additional information to the Committee in response to some of the questions that were being asked of the youth bowlers.

The Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee will reconvene in October and will vote at that time whether or not to pass bowling as a new U.I.L. sport. Let’s hope this will be the year. It’s been 75 years and it’s about time bowling gets state athletic association recognition in Texas.

Come and join us in our new worship center on the corner of S. Fry Rd. and Spring Green Blvd.! Pastor Josh Guajardo will begin a new sermon series on August 12, 2012 entitled: “A Tapestry of Brokenness” - 1 Corinthians 12.

Come and help us celebrate “the church” in our new church build-ing! Visit www.trinity-katy.org for more information. Bible Study for all ages: 9:30 Am - Worship: 10:45 Am.

Fort Bend House oF Hope - Bringing Healing and restoration to Hurting teens and tHeir Families

House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christ-centered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www.houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832-764-1123, [email protected].

Become a tutor-understand our student’s liFelinesBecome an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign lan-guage, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

ruoK programFort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will gener-ate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

SALES TAX HOLIDAYAUGUST 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.
