Audition & Admission Process

Please read this entire packet completely. Oak Hammock Middle School, located in the East Zone, is a Magnet School for the Arts, offering innovative arts classes alongside a rigorous academic curriculum. Our Arts Program encompasses a variety of courses at varying levels including dance, art, band, orchestra, chorus, theatre, television production, film production, and music production. Incoming 6th grade students interested in being selected for our Center for the Arts must live in the East Zone and must complete their Student Enrollment Application before applying and auditioning at Oak Hammock Middle. Please follow the procedures described on the following pages carefully. The entire application process for the Center for the Arts at Oak Hammock Middle includes the following steps:

1. Complete the Lee County School District Student Enrollment application either online or paper.

2. Complete the enclosed Student Application and return the entire packet by January 29, 2021. You may also find an application online or in our main office. The application must include the following to be considered:

• A completed application • Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a current teacher and one who can speak to the student’s artistic

ability or desire to be part of our Center for the Arts. Letters may not be from a member of the applicant’s family.

3. Late applications will not be accepted. There will not be any exceptions.

4. Audition appointments will be scheduled for qualifying students after applications have been reviewed.

5. If auditioning, be at Oak Hammock on either February 8th or 9th between 5 and 6 p.m. based on audition choice.

6. Prepare for your audition(s) following each program’s audition guidelines labeled, “Audition Requirements.”

7. All auditions are closed to observers. This is for fairness and equity for all students auditioning.

8. Arrive at the main office of OHMS at the appointed time. Auditions are on a first come, first served basis.

9. A letter will be mailed from OHMS no later than February 12th regarding the status of each student’s acceptance.

10. If selected for the Center for the Arts at Oak Hammock Middle School, you will get an intent form which needs to be filled out immediately and mailed or hand-delivered to OHMS by February 22nd.

11. Students selected will be removed from any other assigned school through Student Enrollment. This will be taken care of by OHMS.

12. Students are expected to make a three-year commitment to the Arts Program at Oak Hammock Middle School. This commitment includes participation and attendance for ALL performance related after school activities.

13. Parent/Guardian involvement is HIGHLY recommended and welcomed.

Theatre Arts

Throughclassroomstudyandstudiowork,studentswillbetrainedintheartandcraftoftheatre.Dramastudentsgainskillsinacting,pantomime,costumes,lighting,sound,stagecraft,literature,history,vocaltechniques,andplaywriting.Studentswilllearnsuccessfulcommunicationinthetheaterinvolvesthefullintegrationofalloftheseparts.

AUDITIONREQUIREMENTS

Eachstudentwillparticipateinaliveauditiontoincludebutnotlimitedtothefollowing:¨ Prepareone(1)monologuefromapublishedplay.Theselectedmonologuemustbememorized.

Maximummonologuetimeisatotaloftwominutes.Checkyourmaterialcarefullytoensurethatyoumeetthistimelimit,asyouwillbetimed.

¨ Studentsmaybeaskedtoparticipateinashortmovementactivitytodemonstratebasicskillsofcommitmenttocharacter.Pleasewearattirethatallowsformovement.

AuditionAttireStudentsmustwearappropriateauditionattire.Noshorts,t-shirts,orsandalsofanykindwillbepermitted.Pleasedressasyouwouldifyouwereattendingaspecialevent,butremembertoalsodressinawaythatallowsformovement.Hairshouldbesecuredawayfromtheface.« Applicantsshouldbringacurrentheadshotandresume(ifapplicable/available)totheiraudition.

Thisisbynomeansarequirementbutsimplyahelpfultool.

Visual Arts ThevisualartsprogramatOakHammockMiddleSchoolteachesanappreciationofArtacrosstimeandcultures.TheBeginningArtcourseconcentratesondevelopingstudents’artisticskillsandtechniquesandallowsforplacementintotheAdvancedArtProgram.Studentswillbecomestrongvisualcommunicators,creativethinkersandresourcefulproblemsolvers.Throughoutthecurriculum,studentswillbeexpectedtocreatebothtwo-andthree-dimensionalartworksaswellasmaintainapersonalportfoliowiththeopportunitytoparticipateindistrictartshows.


Eachstudentwillparticipateinaliveauditiontoincludebutnotlimitedtothefollowing:¨ Studentswillberequiredtosketchwitha6Bpencilandcharcoalwithouterasers.¨ Studentswillhaveachoiceofstilllifecompositionstodraw.Sketchesmadeduringtheauditionwill

NOTbereturnedtostudents.

AuditionAttireStudentsmustwearappropriateauditionattirethatincludesprofessionaldress.

Chorus

TheChoralProgramatOakHammockMiddleSchoolconsistsofthreelevelsofchorus:Beginning,IntermediateandAdvanced.Eachgroupwillbeexpectedtoperforminfrontofanaudienceconsistingoftheschoolcommunity,familymembers,andlocalcommunityperformances.Musictheoryandmusicreadingarepartoftheexpectationsforallthreelevelsofchorus.Allincoming6thgraderswillstartinChorus1andchoralplacementin7thgradewillbedependentuponperformancethroughoutthestudent’s6thgradeyear.


Eachstudentwillparticipateinaliveauditiontoincludebutnotlimitedtothefollowing:¨ Studentsareexpectedtoprepareandmemorizeavocalselection.¨ Studentswillrespondorallytoquestionsaboutnoterecognitionfortheirownclef,noteandrest

values,andmusicalsymbols.¨ Studentswilllistentoaseriesof3-5pitchesonthepianoandsingthemback.¨ Studentswillsingamajorscaleusingsolfeggioorothersyllables.¨ Applicantswillbejudgedonpitchaccuracy,tonequality,rhythmicaccuracy,expressiveness,musical

effect,andsight-reading.¨ Accompaniment:Studentsmaysingwithorwithoutaccompaniment.Ifaccompanimentisdesired,it

mustbeaCDorURLofaYouTubeaccompaniment.Accompanimentsmustbeinstrumentalonly.Norecordedvoicesonthetracks.

¨ Suggestedsongs:Americanfolksongsoreasyclassicalpieces.


Dance

AtOakHammockMiddleSchooldancestudentswillbeprovidedwithawiderangeofqualityopportunitiesandexperiencesthatwillallowthemtoprepareforadvancestudy,creativegrowth,andpersonalfulfillment.Studentsparticipatingindancewillstudythemajordancestylesandchoreography,withastrongfocusonperformancepracticesandindividualcreativeexpression.Inthedanceclassroom,skillsaredevelopedthroughclasswork,technique,individualandclassprojects,andperformanceopportunities.CourseofferingsincludeanIntroductiontoDanceclass,IntroductoryBallet,Hip-Hop,SalsaandBallroomDancing,JazzandLyricalDance,andAdvancedDance.

choosing.AnaccompanimenttapeorCDistobeprovidedbythestudent.¨ Studentsaretobringapreparedshortparagraphorresumeoutliningtheirdanceexperienceand

desiretobeamemberoftheOakHammockMiddleSchoolDanceDepartment.

AuditionAttirePleasewearappropriatedancewearorclothingthatiseasytomovein.Hairshouldbesecuredupandoutofthefaceinaponytail,bun,orFrenchbraid.Feetcanbebareorappropriatedanceshoesmaybeworn.

Television & Film Production

TheTelevisionandFilmProductionProgramOakHammockMiddleSchoolintroducesstudentstotheartoftelevisionandfilmactingandproducing.Therearethreelevelsofcoursesinthisprogram,TelevisionProduction1,TelevisionProduction2,andFilmProduction.All6thgradestudentswillbeplacedintheTelevisionProduction1course.Studentsatallthreelevelswillbeexpectedtobepartofrecordingandeditingforbothrecordedandliveschoolnewsshowsandshortfilmsandeditorials.TelevisionandFilmproductionwillexposestudentstowritingscripts,followingteleprompters,actinginfrontofacamera,editingfilmclips,andproducingtelevisionshowsandshortfilms.StudentsintheFilmProductionclasswillcompeteinFilmFestivals.

possiblenewsstorytobeexpandeduponbythewriter.


Music Production TheMusicProductionProgramOakHammockMiddleSchoolintroducesstudentstotheartoflyricwriting,creativepoetrywriting,andmusicproduction.Studentsinthiscoursewilllearntheartofwritinglyricsforthepurposeofpoetryorforsongs.Inaddition,studentsmayplayinstrumentsorsingsongsforthepurposeofrecordingtheirownwork.StudentsinadvancedcourseswillproducemusicCDsperformedbyOakHammockstudents.

AUDITIONREQUIREMENTSEachstudentwillparticipateinaliveauditiontoincludebutnotlimitedtothefollowing:¨ Theproductionteacherwillinterviewstudentstodeterminewhichaspectofmusicproductionbest

suitsthem.¨ Studentsmaybeexpectedtowriteabriefessayabouttheirinterestinmusicproduction.


Band

TheOakHammockMiddleSchoolBandProgramconsistsofthreeensemblelevels:Beginning,Intermediate,andAdvancedBands.Eachgroupwillbeexpectedtoperforminfrontofanaudienceconsistingoftheschoolcommunity,familymembers,andcommunitymembersatcommunityevents.Musictheoryandmusicreadingarepartoftheexpectationsforallthreelevelsofband.Allincoming6thgraderswithoutpriorexperiencewillstartinBeginningBandandplacementin7thgradewillbedependentuponperformancethroughoutthestudent’s6thgradeyear.AdvancedandIntermediateBandmembershaveopportunitiestoauditionforAllCounty,AllState,andparticipateintheSolo&EnsembleFestival.
