INTERNSHIPS►Please read the Internship Search Guide that has been sent to you and is posted on our website! This contains resources, examples/templates for application materials and walks you through the process step-by-step. Be prepared!

In brief you will need to: 1) Update your resume with relevant coursework and experiences and have it

reviewed by someone with a sharp and critical eye - that’s me! 2) Master the art of writing pithy, narrative cover letters that address the org. needs.3) Target about 15 organizations of interest and look up their deadlines and

requirements.►A spreadsheet will help you keep on top of all the application materials, deadlines and contacts – I HIGHLY recommend this.► If your list looks like the “Who’s Who of Int’l Organizations” you need to diversify!

4) Reach out to alums and contacts in your top organizations to discuss your interests and get insight and advice on the organization.

5) Apply before the deadline and follow their instructions!!

Page 10: Fall 2004 Maxwell in Washington International Relations Program … Semester... · 2019-04-11 · 1) Update your resume with relevant coursework and experiences and have it reviewed

Organizations all have different timelines, so be aware that this is a messy and maddening process.

After applying, you need to be prepared for/to:• Interview process (Career Services mock interview)• Know how to juggle offers (NEVER commit to an organization

unless you are prepared to follow-through)• Negotiate your schedule

I am just a phone call or email away and here to help you with your materials, target organizations, find contacts, weigh options, etc – if you have a question, please call me! This is a learning process.

Please keep in touch with me on the internship front!!

DC is expensive; develop a budget and stick to it! Expect to spend about $500 more on living expenses than in

Syracuse: Daily transportation -> now you will have UPASS!!! Food

Entertainment

BONUS: No books to buy! We use government, think-tank and media publications which are freely accessible online or through the SU online library

Many students pick-up PT jobs, but I would wait until you are in DC and familiar with workload

Travel Arrangements:

How to get to DC…

The most convenient way is to fly into Washington Reagan National Airport (www.mwaa.com/national/) from which you can take the metro into the city.

Otherwise, you can come into the Dulles or Baltimore-Washington International Airports and either take the train, shuttle or cab into the city(Supershuttle is affordable, but slow)

You can take the train (www.amtrak.com/) or bus (www.washny.com/) from NYC, as well. The GoTo buses are only $25!

Hotel Accommodations (if your parents are driving you):nearby accommodations & driving directions can be found in the apartment guide which is posted on the bottom of our Facilities & Housing page on our website.

Getting around the city…

Are you bringing a car?…Parking is expensive and difficult. You can also apply for a reciprocity permit from DC.

Public TransportationWashington has excellent public transportation which is typically the easiest and

fastest way to get around town, but it can get pricey. Expect to spend $40-$50 a week on transportation ►no additional cost now with UPASS!

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has a very useful trip planner to plot points and travel time: www.wmata.com/

Do NOT ignore the bus system, you can use your UPASS card on the Metro buses and many times a bus will get you closer to your destination

Metro System Map: www.wmata.com/metrorail/colormap.pdfThe system runs until 11:30pm Monday-Friday, and until 1am on Fridays and

Saturdays. Service ends at 11pm on Sundays.
