Former West Point Assistant Coach Adam Bohac (pronounced Bo-hah-ch), becomes the school’s seventh, and second youngest, Head Coach for Men’s Crimson Storm Basketball at SNU. The youngest coach in SNU history was Dr. Larry Mills, who took the head post at the age of 24, in 1969. Bohac, 26, replaces Mike Broughton, who resigned in May to take the Director of Athletics position at Jennings County High School in North Vernon, Indiana.

“I am grateful to Dr. Gresham and Coach Bobby Martin for an opportunity to return to SNU and serve as the Men’s Basketball Coach,” said Bohac. “I believe strongly in the University’s mission and am looking forward to joining the tremendous faculty and staff at SNU. The people of SNU make it a great place to work and go to school … I can’t wait to get started!”

Bohac returns to SNU from the United States Military Academy, where he served as assistant

for Jim Crews for the past season. At West Point, Bohac focused on recruiting. Army was a Patriot League Semifinalist last season and posted the program’s most Patriot League wins in school history last year. Bohac’s recruit-ing class was ranked 77th in the nation this season by Hoop Scoop.

Bohac first came to Southern Nazarene in 2004, where he served as an assistant for Mike Broughton for three seasons. He was Brough-ton’s main recruiter and helped guide SNU to the 2007 SAC Tournament Championship and the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Tournament. In 2007, SNU finished 6th in the nation in the final NAIA National Poll. Bohac was SNU’s recruiting coordinator, scouting coordina-tor, video coordinator, and he coached SNU’s perimeter players.

“I coached Adam at Nebraska and he was my assistant at SNU for three years,” said former SNU Head Coach Mike Broughton. “He is very disciplined, a hard worker and will be a very good coach. He will do a good job of carrying on our tradition.”

“We are very excited to have Adam as our new men’s coach,” said SNU Director of Athletics, Bobby Martin. “Adam has a tremendous work

ethic and is extremely knowledgeable about the sport of basketball. He did an outstanding job for Mike while he was here as an assistant and brings Division I experience to our program. We believe he will do a great job with our program.”

“It is a privilege to be a part of such a tradition rich program,” added Bohac. “I look forward to helping build on the great foundation that has been established here, and to re-connecting with many of our supporters … and am anxious to meet the entire SNU extended family.”

A change in leadership for SNU Men’s Basketball

Page 2: Fall 2008 - Southern Light

It was during her seven consecutive

trips with SNU’s Commission Unto

Mexico that Sarah beganto feel a call to full-time missions work. So, as a freshman at SNU, she applied for the ministerial internship program. Now, in her senior year, Sarah is grateful to have received the numerous benefits the program offers. Financial concerns will not hinder plans to continue training for ministry. Professionally, her internship place-ments have provided a variety of practical expe-riences, regular feedback and shared experiences with fellow interns.

“Through the program, my passion for ministry is growing out of real-life circumstances where I minister alongside mentors who help make me better,” explained Sarah. Personally, the pro-gram has allowed Sarah to more deeply under-stand the commitment to Christian service, and has confirmed her desire to serve as a missionary for the Church of the Nazarene.

Gifts to The Hall of Witnesses provide a place to honor the “cloud of witnesses,” like Dean, Roxie and Stephane, and thus, enable them to continue to cheer for students, like Sarah, who are run-ning the race, preparing for a life of Christian service.

Brenda K. Styers is the Director of Alumni Relations for Southern Nazarene University.

Fall2008

Good NewsFind Us FaithfulHebrews 12:1 speaks about the “cloud of witnesses” that surrounds the faithful in their journey through life. The writer calls for those who seek to follow Christ to focus on the prize, rejecting any impediment that would slow or detour the believer in his or her quest for the ultimate reward of Heaven. It is with this in mind that the Homecoming theme for 2008 centers on Southern Naza-rene University alumni and friends who have contributed to the life-journeys of others on this quest.

Many “witnesses” are ministers who nurtured and encouraged followers to persist in seeking their goal. This homecom-ing weekend centers on people who have invested their lives in ministry of one kind or another. We want to say “thank you” for your lives of service to God that have been lived out before us. In a major new on-campus exhibit, known as The Hall of Witnesses, grateful persons can honor sig-nificant influences in their lives. The process is described within this issue. Perhaps the reader will recall such a person and desire to honor them by recognition in this display that will be opened and dedicated during the weekend festivities.

Another important activity is the dedica-tion of the facility for the Ziglar Center for Ethical Leadership in the Royce Brown Building. Zig Ziglar, Christian author and speaker for whom the Center is named, will be in attendance, as will some of the donors who made the Center possible. Everyone is invited to this event.

Of course, as always, there will be reunions of classes returning to their alma mater for this season of remembering. The Saturday night Showcase with Rocky Gribble and his troop of performers, the Toler Brothers and a “showcase” of SNU talent, will be a high point in the weekend. Plan to join us if you can, to celebrate God’s faithfulness to His people and to Southern Nazarene University.

s the world watched broadcasts of the summer Olympics, cameras panned crowds of people clapping their hands and yelling at the top of their voices to cheer on the athletics. Occasionally, though, the camera would focus on an individual – often a parent or coach. They displayed a slightly different emotion than the cheering crowd. They seemed to hold their breath at times. Their smiles radiated when the execution was excellent, and they still clapped when things did not go as planned. Their actions communicated a deep loyalty to their athlete.

Hebrews 12 talks about running a race of faith, and refers to a group of people, a cloud of wit-nesses. It is obvious these witnesses are watch-ing, and their presence inspires the runners to keep going even when it is difficult.

We, too, have people who cheer for us, many who have dedicated their lives to Christian service. With these servants in mind, SNU has established The Hall of Witnesses as a place to honor their lifetime of service, and provide support for SNU students preparing for a life of service. To date, SNU has received gifts to honor ___ individuals. Here is a brief glimpse of three honorees, and a current ministerial intern.

HONORED BY

Gary (’75) and Vickie (Wessels, ’74) Morsch

Roxie Moore met Dean Wessels in Dallas before she came to Bethany Peniel College, now SNU. Dean had already decided to attend another school, but he transferred to SNU six weeks into the semester. He just couldn’t stand to be away from Roxie! Together, Dean and Roxie have given their entire lives in service to the Church of the Nazarene, first as pastors and

then throughDean’s 40 years of service as the director of the Pensions and Benefits Department.

When SNU presentedthe idea of The Hall of Witnesses, the Wessel’s daughter, Vickie Morsch, thought of her parents. They had given of them-selves in full-time Christian service, and they talked about how their years on campus were the best years of their lives. “It just seemed like the natural thing to do,” shared Vickie regarding their decision to honor her parents.

SNU is blessed to have a number of professors who have chosen to make this university their life’s career. One such person is Stephane Shel-lenberger, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology. This fall she began her 32nd year as professor at SNU. When asked why she has remained at SNU, Stephane replied, “Because of the wonderful students, exceptional faculty and staff and God’s call in my life.” Those who observe Stephane see a person who is truly dedicated to the ministry of Christian education.

The donors had already decided to give to the endowment for the ministerial internship program. However, when they heard they could give their gift in honor of someone who has given their life to full-time Christian education, they immediately thought of Stephane. “We have watched her live out the life of a servant leader, and we simply wanted to say, ‘thank you’.”

Educating a young generation of ministers who will follow God’s heart and lead the church forward is the reason for the SNU Ministe-rial Internship program. Preparing students for ministry while helping them finish their education free – or nearly free – of college debt is a cause worth supporting. For this reason, the SNU community will dedicate The SNU Hall of Witnesses in the S.T. Ludwig Religion Building during Homecoming at 9 am Saturday morning, November 8, 2008.

Helping students gain valuable, supervised ministry experience and financial assistance for college is reason enough to create a home for The Hall of Witnesses. Yet in addition, it gives families or churches the opportunity to honor those who have carried the light of the Gospel of Christ, at home or around the world. The names, photos and biographical descriptions of all those honored thus far – living or deceased – will be featured in an interactive computer display, and all the nominees will be celebrated

“Hello Dolly! is just a beautiful story,” stated Susan Adams-Johnson, Director of Production of Opera & Musical Theatre at SNU, when asked why this particular musical was selected as the fall musical production. On top of the well-known story itself, the SNU music department also has two strong, gifted singers that fit per-fectly with this musical that is family-friendly and entertaining. Adams-Johnson is committed to producing musicals for the SNU community that fit well within the Christian culture, and also provide excellent avenues for students to stretch their skills and grow within challenging roles.

Cover correctionThe SNU student featured on the front cover of Southern Light, Spring 2008, J.K. Feisal (’08), was listed as the first SNU student to study abroad in Cairo, Egypt. Although the experience was a prestigious honor in itself, we have since discovered that the “first” honor actually belongs to a former student named Kevin Archer (’95) who made this study-abroad trip to Cairo in spring 1995. Ten years after that study experience (in 2005), Dr. Archer founded the In-stitute for Global Education, a company that sets up study-abroad programs for American college students in places such as Vienna, Austria and San Jose, Costa Rica. He states that his “life transforming” experience in Cairo, Egypt, is the reason for his current life-path and success today.
