This september, two new high school programs were added to east side house’s portfolio with the new york city Department of education: Mott Haven Community High School and the Bronx Design and Construction Academy. both schools are designed to help students develop the skills they need to earn a high school diploma while preparing them for college and career options.
A transfer school for overage and under-credited youth at serious risk of dropping out of high school altogether, Mott Haven Community High School will serve 150 students this year with the plan to grow to 200 students in the next 2 years. 75 paid internships are available to students in the program, as well as a transitional bilingual education program for those who are english language learners.
The bronx Design and construction Academy is a career and Technical education school that prepares high school students for careers in the building trades in addition to offering a college prep curriculum. courses include heating ventilation and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and pre-engineering/architectural drafting. As a partner, east side house provides attendance outreach, counseling services, and credit accumulation support to the student body. The program, housed in the same building as east side house’s bronx haven high school and the smith campus young Adult borough center, will serve 278 students this year. in addition to a high school diploma, graduates of the program will receive a trade certification.

Fact: East Side House
now has seven high school
programs in partnership
with New York City’s
Department of Education.
1,200 students were served
in our high school programs
in 2011–2012 and we will
serve 1,350 in 2012–13.
Dear Friends:
In the past year, we have expanded our reach significantly. In addition to the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx, East Side House now serves surrounding communities in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.
This means that more people are receiving our services and improving their lives than ever before. In our high school programs alone, we will serve 1,200 students in 2012 with the goal of reaching 1,350 in 2013. We are proud to be sought out as a trusted resource and we have worked hard to respond effectively to complex, changing need.
Collaborative partnership has been key. In this issue, you will learn about two new high school programs in our partnership with the New York City Department of Education — Mott Haven Community High School and the Bronx Design and Construction Academy — both designed to help students build the skills necessary to earn a high school diploma and become college and career-ready. You will learn about our partnership with Start Small, Think Big, Inc., serving to bring civil legal services, financial counseling, and other asset-building programming to our clients and other Bronx residents. You will read about how the children in our summer camp were inspired to “Dream Big” through a partnership with the Bronx Children’s Museum. And you will hear from Orlando Diaz, alumnus of our Mott Haven Village Prep and recent college graduate, now working in partnership with us to help our current high school students plan for college and beyond.
Of course, the depth and breadth of our work would not be possible without our Board members, donors, and the partnerships of our annual fundraising events, the Winter Antiques Show and the Gala Preview to the New York International Auto Show. I hope you enjoy the previews of those events in these pages and that you will “save the dates.”
It is a privilege to be in the position to innovate and respond to the needs of the people we serve in a meaningful way, strengthening the fabric of communities. As you read on, please know that your participation makes this possible, and that together we are making a measurable difference.
Sincerely,
John A. SanchezExECuTIVE DIrECTOr

East Side House is a community resource in the south bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. our focus is on critical developmental periods—early childhood and adolescence—and critical junctures —points at which people are determined to become economically independent. We enrich, supplement, and enhance the public school system and place college within reach of mo-tivated students. We provide services to families in order that other family members may pursue their educati onal goals. We provide technology and career readiness training to enable students to improve their economic status and lead more fulfilling lives.

neighborhoods of the south bronx, visited east side house’s summer camp with teaching artists to provide educational workshops for the children.
The program culminated in a special all-day event at cardinal hayes high school in August that celebrated what the children had learned, the life of Mr. sanabria, and the accomplishments of other role models and celebrities from the bronx including supreme court Justice sonia sotomayor and sonia Manzano (“Maria” from Sesame Street), both ofwhom were in attendance to interact with participating child- ren and their families.
Parents, staff, public officials and invited guests enjoyed a live performance by Mr. sanabria and his orchestra and the dancing of east side house children under the direction of the dance group ¡Retumba!. A wonderful day was had by all.

high school as a shy individual who sat at the back of the room. in 2008, i stood at the front of the room, on the podium, speaking to the graduating class of 2008 and congratulating them on their great accomplishments. While at MhvP i challenged myself physically, mentally and emotionally, and as the valedictorian, i had achieved a milestone in my educational career. nonetheless, i knew that the journey continued.
There were a few obstacles that prevented me from enrolling at Marist college. unfortunately, my financial situation prevented me from going away and living in a dorm. instead, the east side house settlement staff helped me decide on an alternative plan since i could not go away for school. i stayed in the city and attended John Jay college of criminal Justice. As a result of
graduating as valedictorian i received various awards through east side house.
The awards i received helped me pay for my tuition, books and travel. not only did i earn awards but the east side house staff enthusiastically helped me with the whole college process. They are optimistic individuals that want to see their students succeed no matter what life
brings upon each and every one of us. i was fortunate to have such great support from the faculty, staff, my peers and most importantly my parents. They pushed me to go beyond my limits and never give up. east side house was like an annex to my family. i developed great relationships with them that allowed me to mature and be where i am today.
Fact: Over 150 students completed high school in East Side House college prep programs this year. 115 of them are enrolling in college.
Fact: East Side House’s college retention programs serve 65 students daily.
i just graduated from John Jay college and was recently admitted back for graduate studies. i will be pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Administration. i currently work for columbia university Medical center as an administrative assistant. i also work part-time for east side house as a college coach for the graduating seniors of MhvP. in this role i implement the knowledge i gained and utilize it to assist the seniors to the best of my ability. i feel grateful for the amount of work and time that was put into molding who i am today. Therefore, i will dedicate my time and effort to mold those students to be the best at everything that they do. My work experience has given me great insight that will be applicable in my future career. i plan to pursue law enforcement at a federal level. This would have not been possible without east side house.
Fact: In the past year, East Side House’s Social Services department provided workshops to over 270 participants
in our Supporting Transitions from Early-education to Public School (STEPS) program with the United Way of New
York City. In addition, the department served 93 children, 128 students, and 109 families by providing individual
counseling, case management, referral services, advocacy, and emergency services.

with start small, Think big, inc.
to bring financial counseling and
other asset-building programming
to clients and residents of the
bronx. Although a separate non-
profit organization, start small
has been co-located at east side house and has a
complementary mission: to empower low- to moderate-
income individuals in the bronx to create and capture
income- and asset-generating opportunities that ensure
their long-term economic security. start small works
toward this mission via a combination of services that
include personal and business financial counseling
and education and legal services in the areas of small
business and consumer debt.
in its short 2-year history, the partnership has had
a significant impact. start small has served over 700
bronx residents, a large percentage of whom are east
side house program participants, and brought close to
$1 million worth of financial and legal services to the
bronx through strategic partnerships with over 30 law
firms, banks, credit unions, for-profit and not-for-profit
organizations, academic and governmental institutions.
