Trips & Excursions

Victorian Cape May 1 Tuesday, 10/9, $166Class # 170The entire seashore town of Cape May, with its unique collection of Victorian homes, is a National Historic Landmark. The fire of 1878 destroyed thirty blocks; new buildings that went up were built in the modern style of the day, later known as Victorian, with lots of gingerbread trim and turrets. Join us as we first tour the Emlen Physick Estate for a glimpse into life as it was lived more than 100 years ago. Built in 1879, it is now a fascinating museum. After lunch at the Grand Hotel, we’ll take a trolley ride with a guide who will not only point out landmark buildings and their architectural features but will also entertain us with accounts of Cape May’s reign as “Queen of the Seaside Resorts”. We’ll end our visit with afternoon tea at the Physick Estate. Come along with us as we travel back to the Victorian era for the day! Departure at 8:30am with a return at approximately 6:30pm. Please select your luncheon entrée choice when you regis-ter: petite filet mignon or Cape May crab cake.

Historic Homes Along The Hudson1 Monday, 10/15, $145Class # 171Boscobel, the elegant Federal-period house museum, with its breathtaking views of the Hudson River, dates from the early 1800’s. It contains one of the nation’s leading collections of decorative arts from the Federal period, with furniture by famous cabinetmakers such as Duncan Phyfe and original china, glass, and silver which are all displayed in beautiful period interiors based on historical sources. Lunch (included) is at a charming local inn. Then we’ll visit Washington Irving’s Sunnyside. Our costumed guide will explain how Irving designed Sunnyside and its grounds himself. Hear about his storied past and how he came to be America’s first internationally famous author, best remembered now for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. Since Sunnyside and many of its furnishings remained in the family, a visit is one of the most authentic experiences of mid-19th century life in America. A wonderful time of year to view these historic homes amid fall foliage! Departure at 9:00am with a return at approximately 5:45pm.

NYC Theatre – Newsies1 Sunday, 10/21, $185Class # 172“Newsies” opened on Broadway to overwhelm-ing acclaim. It’s a fast-paced new musical with jaw-dropping choreography (Tony Award for Best Choreography), terrific songs (Tony for Best Score) by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast”) and a book that theatre-goers of all ages will enjoy. It’s loosely based on the true story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. Front mezzanine seating. “A stirring crowd-pleaser! A musical worth singing about!” (NY Times) It’s not to be missed! Time to shop and have lunch before the theater at the Chelsea Market, with its myriad of shops and restau-rants. Departure at 10:30am with a return at approximately 7:00pm.

NYC Theatre – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf1 Sunday, 10/21, $182Class # 173“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” won the Tony for Best Play when it opened on Broadway in the early 1960’s. Written by Edward Albee and considered one of the great American dramas of the 20th century, it concerns a college couple locked in a devastating love-hate relationship who entertain a young, new professor and his wife one night. A great deal of dirty linen comes out in a wash of alcohol, and no one emerges unscarred. The excellent Steppenwolf production comes to Broadway. See this tour-de-force! Time to shop and have lunch before the theater at the Chelsea Market, with its myriad of shops and restaurants. Departure at 10:30am with a return at approximately 7:00pm.

The following trips are offered through Great Outings.

Trips & Excursions (continued)Picasso at the Guggenheim1 Tuesday, 10/30, $164Class # 174On a private tour, see “Picasso Black and White”, which focuses in depth on Pablo Picasso’s career-long exploration of a black and white palette. Surveying the Spanish master’s work from 1904 to 1971, this comprehensive exhibit contains some 110 works, including paintings, sculptures and several works on paper. It traces the artist’s unique vision throughout his whole body of work, divided into themes, such as his early monochromatic blue and rose paint-ings, gray-toned Cubist canvases, and elegant neoclassical portraits. Lunch (included) is at the famous 21 Club, a former prohibition-era speakeasy. Perhaps its most famous feature is the line of jockey statues which adorns the balcony above the entrance. In the 1930’s, some of the affluent customers began to show their appreciation by presenting 21 with jock-eys painted to represent the racing colors of the stables they owned. The restaurant has been frequented by so many celebrities that many have their favorite tables. Jackets for men are required and jeans and sneak-ers are not permitted. Then visit Theodore Roosevelt’s Birthplace, a National Historic Site. Here our 26th president spent the first 14 years of his life. Departure at 9:15am with a return at approximately 5:45pm.

Winterthur and The Du Ponts1 Sunday, 11/4, $152Class # 175Almost 60 years ago, collector and horti-culturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today Winterthur is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived there. The 60-acre naturalistic garden, designed by du Pont, is among America’s best, with beautiful specimen plantings and massed displays of color. On a narrated garden tram ride, discover garden highlights and the history of the estate. Then on a guided tour see the exquisite spaces in which du Pont entertained in grand style. Time also to explore the superb collections in the galleries. (Don’t miss the world-renowned Campbell Collection of Soup Tureens.) Later, enjoy brunch (included) at Wilmington’s famed Hotel du Pont. An award-winning culinary team offers classic dining with impeccable service in an elegant atmosphere. Departure at 9:00am with a return at approximately 6:00pm.

Music and Art in Philadelphia1 Friday, 11/30, $166Class # 176The Barnes Foundation, reborn, remains true to itself, only better. Formerly in Merion, PA, it has recently moved to downtown Philadelphia, with its galleries replicated from the original. It holds a breathtaking collection of 800 paint-ings: 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, 59 Matisses, and much more. Masterpieces literally line the walls of the galleries from floor to ceiling. Our visit begins with an introduction to the collection and Dr. Barnes’s unique approach to displaying art. Individual audio guides provide expert commentary and art history references. Lunch is on your own in the café or coffee shop. The afternoon concert of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center features Lars Vogt as the piano soloist, play-ing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The program also includes Wagner’s Orchestral Highlights from the Ring. What a treat for both eyes and ears! Departure at 8:30am with a return at approximately 6:30pm.

Big Band Holiday1 Saturday, 12/8, $168Class # 177Kick off the holiday season with the music of the renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO). The orchestra will be joined by vocalists Rene Marie and Gregory Porter. The program includes imaginative arrangements of timeless holiday songs. In residence since 1988 and comprising 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, the JLCO is widely regarded as the “finest big band in the world today”. (Daily Telegraph, UK) Jazz at Lincoln Center is located in Manhattan’s Time Warner Building, which also houses a multitude of restaurants (and shops). Lunch is on your own, given so many choices. Before the concert we’ll tour the jazz facility and after the performance, we’ll be treated to a “meet and greet” with one of the artists. A great start to the Holiday season! Departure is at 9:30am with a return at approximately 6:00pm.
