Julie Billiart School, a premier Catholic

elementary school, was founded in 1954

by the Sisters of Notre Dame in the Music

House, a large home on the Ansel Road

property of Notre Dame Academy in

Cleveland, Ohio. At that time Julie Billiart

School was the first of its kind in the area.

On September 8, 1954 the school opened

with 16 junior high students; 11 boys and 5

girls. The school quickly outgrew its original

space and on January 16, 1958, the school

relocated to the Arter Mansion on Clubside

Road in Lyndhurst, Ohio. The first major

improvement was the construction of the

gymnasium in 1970. As enrollment increased,

the need for additional space also increased.

This necessitated the temporary relocation

of the primary level classes to the Notre

Dame College Campus in South Euclid,

Ohio. In 1979, a four room addition was built

that allowed the primary level classes to

move back to the Arter Mansion. The school

continued to grow in enrollment, program

offerings and support services; once again,

the school outgrew its space.

A dream came true in 2006 with the

dedication of a 16,000 square foot addition

to the mansion. Four spacious classrooms,

adjacent resource rooms, an art room

and a music/all-purpose room completed

the school. Intermediate and junior-high

students and the art therapy program joyfully

moved into their new space. The lower

level of the mansion was converted into the

Advancement offices.

AUGUST 19TH, WHEN THE STUDENTS RETURN WILL BE JULIE BILLIART SCHOOL’S

60TH “FIRST DAY.” JBS HAS ENJOYED A RICH HISTORY OF GROWTH OVER THE YEARS,

WHILE ALWAYS STAYING TRUE TO OUR ORIGINAL MISSION OF SERVING CHILDREN

WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES. WE OFFER A STRUCTURED AND NURTURING HOLISTIC

PROGRAM THAT ATTENDS TO THE ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL

GROWTH OF EACH CHILD.

Miss Lannie Davis, formerly the

school’s Vice Principal and Director

of Special Education has become the

first Vice President of JB. She will

work side by side with Sister during

her final year, and is in line for

succession as President in July 2015.

Join us in recognizing Sister

Agnesmarie’s dedication and

devotion to the students by attending

one of our Special 60th Anniversary

Events and our Annual Benefit Gala

Celebrating

60years

Page 2: Fall 2014 Blossom

Over the last eight years,

we have continued to invest

in technology and in our

educators while develop-

ing what we call The JB

Way. In addition to staff-

ing each grade level with

two Special Ed teachers,

Julie Billiart School also

offers art therapy, a music

program, behavior, speech

and occupational therapies,

and the Wilson reading

method. Students learn in

small classes: we have a maximum enrollment of twelve children

in kindergarten and grades 1 and 2, and fifteen children in grades

3-8. Each classroom is equipped with state-of-the-art educational

technology, including Wi-Fi, ACTIVboards, iPads, MacBooks and

sound systems. Our library has over 5,000 fiction and non-fiction

books and has incorporated the world of E-reading and audio-

books with iPods and iPads.

Julie Billiart School has also grown its community relationships

over the last decade, which benefits our own students as well

as others who don’t attend JB. Our students have been helped

tremendously by our partnership between the Cleveland

Clinic and our Behavioral Therapy program, and they have the

opportunity to participate in after school programs like After-Care,

Young Rembrandts, Girl Scouts, and Orchestra offered at lunch

time by the American Independent Music Association. Attendees

continue to gain insight and support through our programs

and lecture series, which provide answers from experts and a

supportive community of peer parents and guardians. Students

from area colleges also learn from us; we are a lab school for

observations and case studies for Notre Dame College, John

Carroll University, Ursuline College, Cleveland State University

and the University of Akron. High-school students are doing

their senior independent study and service projects at JB, from

Beaumont School, Brush High School, Notre Dame-Cathedral

Latin School and Trinity High School.

However, our most important achievement of these past 60

years is changing lives and bringing hope to children and their

families. We are so grateful that the family and friends of our

students love JB and support us with their time, talent and

treasure. For example, the Parent Action Committee is not only

a support network for current families, but also sponsors fun

activities for the students like the annual Boo Breakfast, Holiday

Shoppe, Movie Night, Catholic Schools Week and the End-of-

the-Year Picnic, which was attended by nearly 300 people this

June! With groups like these, our other volunteers including the

dedicated Board of Directors and our countless generous donors,

we are certain that our mission to empower students who learn

differently will live on into the future.

Sister Agnesmarie LoPorto, SND,

received her Bachelor of Arts

degree in Education from St. John’s

College in Cleveland and her master’s degree in Education,

Administration and Reading from Bowling Green State

University. She attended numerous colleges, universities, and

workshops throughout the United States in order to be current

with best practices in the field of special education.

Julie Billiart School in Lyndhurst nurtures and empowers

students with special learning needs. It is a Catholic K-8 school

rooted in the educational principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame

and welcomes diverse faith traditions.

During Sister’s 24 years as Principal, the school has undergone

many developments. In 2006, a six classroom addition, including

an Art therapy room and music room, was added to the original

school located in the Arter Mansion. This addition provides a

resource room for every homeroom with two full-time Special

Ed teachers at each level. Support services needed for the

changing population of Julie Billiart School now include speech

language therapists, an art therapist, an occupational therapist,

a behavior therapist, social skills instruction, and technology and

Wi-Fi throughout the school. Special reading, handwriting and

math programs have enhanced the curriculum.

During her leadership for six years as President, Julie Billiart

School transitioned to a governing Board of Directors. Sister

Agnesmarie has been a dedicated Sister of Notre Dame for 54

years. Throughout her journey at Julie Billiart School she has

received numerous honors including 1985 Learning Disabilities

Administrator of the Year, 2009 The Spirit of St. Julie Award

in recognition of her vision and foresight meeting the unmet

needs of children who learn differently, and The Italian Person of

the year in 2011 for her dedication to the education of children.

Sister’s love for the children of Julie Billiart School speaks

volumes about her passion for special education. She is blessed

to have had the opportunity to honor all God’s children and

change lives with her life’s mission.

Major MilestoneIn her 30th year at JB, Sister Agnesmarie

LoPorto, SND, was among five people

honored by Milestones Autism Resources

on June 18-19 at the Cleveland I-X Center during the 12th

Annual Milestones Autism Spectrum Disorder Conference. Sister

received the Professional Excellence Award. During her 24 years

as principal of the school, she led many innovations including

the addition and the implementation of on-site support services

needed for the changing population of the school, speech-

language therapists, an art therapist, occupational therapist,

behavior therapist, and social skills instruction. “When I was

in high school, I wanted to serve God and be a teacher,” Sister

Agnesmarie said in an interview with cleveland.com. “I wanted to

be a part of a system that was dedicated to children with special

needs. Julie Billiart was the perfect situation. I feel very honored

that I was chosen for this award. In my years here I have learned

more from the children than they have learned from me. This has

been an inspiration and passion of my life.”

In March, we partnered with SpoonDrawer

Media Group to film a very special video to

commemorate Julie Billiart School’s upcoming

60th Anniversary. It was clear that our theme,

“60 Years of Changing Lives,” would be

best illustrated by talking with our alumni

and hearing from them how JB has made a

difference to them personally. We were lucky

enough to find six JB alumni, one from each

decade our school has existed, to come to

the school and share their stories on camera.

It was an incredibly moving day; there was

not a dry eye in the room during filming. Sr.

Agnesmarie glowed with the joy of seeing her

former students. Susan Macha, class of ’66, put

it best when she said, “JB was my home when

I was a student here, and I still come and visit

whenever I need to feel at peace.”

In addition to memoirs from our alumni, the

video will feature current students and staff

in all of their creative glory. No spoilers, but

we hope it will make you laugh as well as cry!

The world premiere will be at the reception

following our 60th Anniversary school opening

mass on September 6th at St. Paschal Baylon

Church, at 10:30 am.

Julie Billiart

School parent

Jakki Nance has

proven what it means to

give of your time, talent

and treasure. During the

2013-2014 school year, Jakki

has been an unwavering

resource and dedicated

volunteer. Along with her

husband Fred, she acted

as an Honorary Chair for

our October 2013 Celebrate

Benefit, bringing in countless

auction items, thousands of

dollars in sponsorships and

many new JB friends. All the

children got to see her big

heart in action as she chaired

the Holiday Shoppe which

allows our students to buy

gifts for their loved ones.

In February, she brought

Olympian Swin Cash to JB,

and in May she hosted an

incredible benefit luncheon at

Saks Fifth Avenue. To make

it even nicer, she arranged

an afternoon of pampering

by the Saks Cosmetics

Department for our

faculty and staff—even

providing special gifts for

the attendees. She truly

embodies what it means

to give generously, and

the entire JB family knows

what a blessing she is. As

President of Philanthropic

Solutions, Ltd., Jakki has

served as a consultant to

non-profits, athletes and

sports organizations in

program development,

charitable estate planning,

board development,

foundation management

and event planning. She has

had the pleasure of working

with the WNBA, State Farm

and The Fifty Million Pound

Challenge, The LeBron James

Family Foundation, and

Olympic Gold Medalist Scott

Hamilton, among others.

She clearly has a passion for

helping others achieve their

philanthropic goals and for

making a difference in the

community.

Swin Cash, WNBA player

and two-time Olympic Gold

Medalist came to JB talk

with the kids about staying

strong, keeping their faith,

and not backing away from

challenges. Swin explained “You can only play sports as

long as your body allows it, but the knowledge you get

from books is with you forever.” Some of our students

asked Swin about challenges that she faced and whether

she was good at basketball right from the beginning or

she had to work on getting better. Swin made sure that

the students knew she had to

“practice, practice, practice”

and that “practice was to

make things a habit. Practice

was not for perfection, no one

can be perfect.”

Swin Cash

We are so grateful

to Jakki for creating

a one-of-a-kind opportu-

nity this past May!

She worked with

representatives from

Ralph Lauren and the

Beachwood Saks Fifth Avenue store to make JB the

beneficiary of an exclusive Ralph Lauren Black-Label

fashion show and luncheon.

Beyond the fundraising opportunity this event presented,

several influential community leaders were inattendance

(like Mayor Gorden, pictured with Jakki above right). The

cities of Cleveland, Beachwood, and Lyndhurst issued

Proclamations declaring May 29, 2014 Autism Awareness

Day. Our two “talkers,” Jeffrey (4th grade) and Eva (8th

grade, stole everyone’s hearts and shared the JB message

like no one else could have.

THANK YOU, SWIN, FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US AND

FOR SHARING SUCH A VALUABLE MESSAGE WITH OUR

JB STUDENTS!

JULIE BILLIART SCHOOL | GRATITUDE 9

Dear Friends,

Sixty years ago the doors of Julie Billiart School opened with 16 students. It was

a dream come true for children who experienced learning differences. Today

we have the same mission of educating children who learn differently. We have

grown to serve 125 children from 5 counties. It is because of your support and

commitment that our mission continues today.

Thank you for partnering with us in advancing our Mission of changing the lives

of children and bringing hope to their families. With your support we are able to

provide the optimal educational experience and environment for our students.

Our professional and dedicated faculty strives to meet the unique needs of

every child. But most of all, their acceptance and love for each child builds

self-confidence and self- esteem allowing each one to grow and develop into a

confident successful learner.

Your generosity helps us maintain and continuously update our beautiful

Arter Mansion, our new school addition, and playground. The peaceful, loving

environment provides an atmosphere of safety and tranquility. Our latest

upgrades include an energy efficient heating system and an enlarged parking lot

to accommodate the need for additional parking for faculty, staff and visitors.

All of you whether an individual, foundation or corporation, has made a lasting

and positive difference in the lives of the children we serve. On behalf of our

children, I thank you for your generous and continued support. May God bless

you abundantly for your kindness.

You just have to visit Julie Billiart School for

open houses a number of years in a row and

see the same students perform each year,

as we have done, to realize that the love the

faculty and staff have for the students and the

teaching techniques they use have produced

spectacular results. Many of these students

have gone on to success in college, which

probably would not have happened without

Julie Billiart School. We have met parents

who praise the school and share with joy the

outcomes in their children’s abilities both

educationally and socially.

We like to invest our money where we know

it will be used prudently and effectively. It has

been very rewarding to see the outcomes in

the students and know that we played a part.

We would like to encourage others to visit the

school and meet the teachers, administrators

and students. You will find that you also will

want to share in the success of these students.

Gifts-In-KindJulie Billiart School welcomes in-kind contributions which also help support the mission and goals of the school.

Please contact the Advancement Office to ensure that your in-kind gift is properly recognized.

It is the place to keep up

to date with all that is

happening at JB:

Here at Julie Billiart School, we feel that the fall

issue is the most important issue of the Blossom

newsletter because we thank and recognize the

many people who have given so generously to the people

and programs that make it the special place that it is. JB has

existed for 60 years because of the belief our supporters

have held that our mission is vital to the families we serve.

Without the love and support of so many, we would be

unable to fulfill our mission.

We are grateful to the 491 supporters who have contributed

$671,534 in the 2013-14 fiscal year, July 1 through June

30. These are gifts to the annual fund, endowed named

scholarship funds, grants for specific programming, the

annual benefit, various other special events, and honor

memorial tributes.

Changing lives for 60 years has required everyone affiliated

with our school to be generous of with their time, talent, and

treasure. This generosity helps us give hope to the students

and their families that call JB home. Thank you and please

know that our doors are always open. We love visitors and

would love for you to see firsthand the special things we do.
