Dean GriffithsBack in two sharp new editions, this oh-so-punny friendship story is making its mark.

“Office supplies have never been more entertaining than they are in this punny tale of friendship and ingenuity.” —Foreword Reviews Starred Review

Pencil and his boy Jackson are a great pair: they draw, they sketch, they scribble. But then Jackson gets Tablet and Pencil finds himself dumped in the dreaded junk drawer; he just can’t compete with Tablet’s videos, games, and movies. How will Pencil ever reclaim Jackson’s at-tention? With the help of some new pun-loving junk-drawer friends (and a drooling, pencil-chomping dog), Pencil sketches out a plan to draw Jackson back into their friendship.

A former educator whose first book was shortlisted for a Crystal Kite award, author Ann Ingalls uses kid-friendly puns and an upbeat tone in this story that celebrates friendship, collaboration, and unplugged fun. Buoyed by award-winning artist Dean Griffith’s always-exuberant il-lustrations, Pencil: A Story with a Point is a gentle reminder that technology is no match for imagination.

“[T]he repetition and simplicity of the text make this an appealing choice for group-sharing during storytime....[A] safe, not-so-scary depiction of Halloween that is appropri-ate for young listeners.”—School Library Journal

What could be better than an autumn trip to the pump-kin patch with the cutest cast of cat characters ready to celebrate Halloween? In bouncy rhyme, the folksy felines choose their pumpkins, wheel them home, and work to-gether through all the steps of carving jack-o-lanterns. With the lanterns’ spooky and cheerful faces shining bright, now is the time to dress up and head out for trick-or-treating.

Tara Anderson, the award-winning illustrator of Nat the Cat Can Sleep Like That, depicts cozy and charming fall scenes in Pumpkin Orange, Pumpkin Round. Infectious rhymes by debut children’s author Rosanna Battigelli will make this a favorite in any season.

Celia GodkinThe top picture book about peregrine falcons returns in a new paperback edition with an expanded Author’s Note.

High in the sky, two peregrine falcons swoop and dive. The pair doesn’t know it yet, but they will lose most of this year’s eggs: the first clutch to a volunteer scal-ing the cliff, and the next to the harmful effects of DDT. Told against the backdrop of scientists’ efforts to understand the raptors’ decline in the wild, this illustrated nonfiction book tells the story of several generations of falcons as they’re taken to a sanctuary, reintegrated into the wild, and ultimately relocated to the ledge of a city skyscraper.

Peter CarnavasCelebrated author-illustrator Peter Carnavas’s gentle family story about mindfulness and stillness reminds us of the beauty all around us—if we only take the time to notice it.

Mary was a quiet girl. She thought quiet thoughts, stepped quiet steps, and whispered quiet words.

Mary knows how to savor the small things. Wonder is ev-erywhere: in the rustle of leaves, in the sigh of a sleeping dog, in the wingbeats of the birds who visit her upcycled feeders. But Mary’s family couldn’t be more different. Amidst the sound of blow-dryers, blenders, lawnmowers, and her brother’s trombone, Mary goes almost unnoticed.

It isn’t until her family starts searching the neighborhood for her that they begin to see the world through her eyes.

From critically acclaimed author-illustrator Peter Carna-vas comes a gentle breeze of a picture book with themes of mindfulness, observation, and being present in the natu-ral world. A Quiet Girl invites young readers (and the noisy adults in their lives) to appreciate the thousand little plea-sures that surround us—if only we would notice them.

Peter Carnavas’s career as a primary school teacher inspired him to embrace his passion for children’s literature. His pic-ture book Blue Whale Blues won the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Crystal Kite Award, and My Sister is a Superhero won an Australian Book Industry Award. The Elephant, Peter’s first novel, won the 2018 Children’s Book Award at the Queensland Literary Awards. He lives on Australia’s Sunshine Coast with his family.

Colleen NelsonIllustrated by

Tara AndersonThe West Highland Terrier that brought Harvey Comes Home to life returns with his nose sharp, ready for a new adventure.

Harvey the West Highland Terrier is back with his beloved Maggie. He is also back at Brayside retirement home, where he and Maggie now volunteer along with their friend Austin. There Maggie is drawn to a new resident, Mrs. Fradette, who tells stories of learning to fix cars as a twelve-year-old during the flood of 1950. Mrs. Fradette, with her bold fashion and love of poker, doesn’t fit in among the beige-cardigan-wearing, bridge-playing ladies of Brayside, but she doesn’t seem to care. Maybe that’s why Maggie likes her so much. Since seventh grade began, Mag-gie hasn’t been fitting in well with her friends, either.

Always alert for anything new—and with a nose that never misses a new scent—Harvey follows his instincts on a walk with Austin and discovers an abandoned newborn puppy in a pile of trash. Austin’s heart almost breaks over

the little puppy’s plight, so he takes her to safety. Maggie and the Brayside residents and staff praise Harvey’s heroic efforts, wishing that Austin could have his own dog. But the little puppy will need time to recover from her trauma before she can be adopted, and then there’s another, even bigger obstacle: Austin’s mom, who says no to pets.

As fall edges toward winter, Harvey picks up an unfriendly scent in his backyard, and he will stop at nothing to keep Maggie and the others safe. But sometimes the little Wes-tie is just too brave for his own good.

Award-winning author Colleen Nelson delivers another satisfying story of heart, perseverance, and one incredible little dog.

An author and junior high school teacher, Colleen Nelson earned her Bachelor of Educa-tion from the University of Manitoba in her hometown of Winnipeg. Her previous works include the critically-acclaimed middle-grade novels Harvey Comes Home and Harvey Holds His Own; Sadia, which won the 2019 Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award; and Blood Brothers, which was selected as the 2018 McNally Robinson Book of the Year for Young People. Colleen writes daily in between appearances at hockey rinks and soccer fields in support of her two sports-loving sons. The family’s West Highland Terrier Rosie adds an extra-loveable dose of liveliness, squirrel-chasing, and shoe-chewing to their lives.

A folk artist and award-winning illustrator who trained at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Tara Anderson is known for her lively and humorous illustrations of animals. Her books include the illustrated novels Harvey Comes Home and Sapphire the Great and the Meaning of Life, the Halloween picture book Pumpkin Orange, Pumpkin Round, and the award-winning Nat the Cat Can Sleep Like That, among others. Tara shares a farmhouse in Tweed, Ontario, with her husband, her young daughter, and several cats.

Victoria AllenbyAn engaging, multilayered book that helps little ones identify shapes on their favorite construction-site vehicles

Dump Truck, Dump TruckComing through!I spy a triangle—how about you?

It’s no secret that toddlers of any gender love big ve-hicles. Colleen Nelsonillustrated by

Alice CarterFall in love at first blunder with a wisely foolish kindergarten teacher who makes the first day of school an experience to remember.

Kayla isn’t too sure about the first day of kindergarten. What if she misses her mom? What if she can’t find the bathroom? But when Kayla meets Mrs. Muddle, it quickly becomes clear that Kayla’s problems are nothing com-pared to her teacher’s. Mrs. Muddle mixes up the kids’ name tags, takes them to the library instead of the gym, and can’t find the bathroom. She doesn’t even know how to use a slide properly! Clearly somebody needs to take charge. Soon Kayla is much too busy teaching her teacher to think about her own worries.

Hearkening back to classics like the Amelia Bedelia collection and Douglas Wood’s What Teachers Can’t Do, award-winning author Colleen Nelson will make parents, children, and especially teachers laugh out loud over Mrs. Muddle’s antics and the exasperated Kayla’s leadership. As the students find their way around the school, Alice Carter’s giggle-inducing art welcomes readers into a kin-dergarten class that makes the first day of school seem very appealing indeed.

Bahram Rahmanillustrated by

Gabrielle GrimardInspired by Kabul, Afghanistan’s first library bus and colored by family memories, a touching snapshot of one innovative way girls received education in a country disrupted by war

It is still dark in Kabul, Afghanistan when the library bus rumbles out of the city. There are no bus seats—instead there are chairs and tables and shelves of books. And there are no passengers—instead there is Pari, who is nervously starting her first day as Mama’s library helper. Pari stands tall to hand out notebooks and pencils at the villages and the refugee camp, but she feels intimidated. The girls they visit are learning to write English from Mama. Pari can’t even read or write in Farsi yet. But next year she will go to school and learn all there is to know. And she is so lucky. Not long ago, Mama tells her, girls were not allowed to read at all.

Author Bahram Rahman grew up in Afghanistan during years of civil war and the restrictive Taliban regime. He wrote The Library Bus to tell new generations about the struggles of women who, like his own sister, were forbid-den to learn. Brought to life by the pensive and captivat-ing art of award-winning illustrator Gabrielle Grimard, The Library Bus is a celebration of literacy, ingenuity, and the strength of women and girls demanding a future for themselves.

Bahram Rahman was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and grew up during the civil war and the Taliban regime. He earned a medical degree at Kabul Medical University and a master’s degree in public policy at the University of Erfurt, Germany, while also working as an activist in Afghanistan in the areas of gender equality and youth political partici-pation. Bahram came to Canada as a refugee in 2012, and today he is a senior policy advisor at the Ministry of Health in Ontario. He wrote The Library Bus, his first picture book, to document the struggle for education experienced by the women in his own family and to draw

attention to the barriers that still exist for millions of children, especially girls, living in war torn countries today.

Gabrielle Grimard transformed her love of design into a career in illustration over the course of her studies at Concordia University and the University of Quebec. In 2018, Gabrielle’s picture book Stolen Words won the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award and was a finalist for the TD Canadian Children’s Book Award. Not My Girl was a USBBY Outstanding International Book. In 2019 Gabrielle pub-lished the enthusiastically reviewed Nutcracker Night. Her creativity has been applied to children’s publishing, advertising, and educational contexts.

Anitha Rao-Robinsonillustrated by

Karen PatkauIn this touching story of belonging and environmental awareness, a young boy’s courage and ingenuity help an orphaned rhinoceros find safety in a new herd.

Tetenya and his mother have found Faru, a baby rhinocer-os, alone on the savannah. They know that rhino herds will adopt orphaned infants, but finding the rangers who pro-tect local herds may be a long and risky prospect—there are poachers lurking about the landscape. Undaunted, Tet-enya sets out, leading Faru past giraffes CHOMP-CHOMP-ING on acacia leaves, amongst the PATTER-PATTERING footsteps of young warthogs, and around guinea fowl SCRITCH-SCRITCHING the earth for seeds. Sudden-ly, danger is upon them: two poachers are coming near. There are only seconds to spare, and Tetenya has nothing

but his wits and a basket of berries to help him.

In A Family for Faru, author Anitha Rao-Robinson draws inspiration from her life-changing time spent on the sa-vannah and from conservationists’ innovation to discour-age poachers: injecting a pink dye into rhinoceros horns. Award-winning illustrator Karen Patkau’s dreamy land-scapes reflect her own travels in the region and celebrate the courage and ingenuity of a young boy as he helps his four-legged friend find a place to belong. An author’s note rounds out this impactful text.

Anitha Rao-Robinson received her Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and worked as an accountant for twenty-four years before trading numbers for words. Her previous works include Broken Worlds in 2014 and Broken Promises in 2017. Anitha is passionate about environmental awareness and hopes to continue to spread change.

Illustrator, designer, visual artist, and author Karen Patkau’s distinctive art can be found in more than a dozen picture books for children. She is the recipient of the Ezra Jack Keats Memorial Medal for Don’t Eat Spiders, and One Watermelon Seed was a Bank Street Best Book. A Good Trade was a White Ravens Choice, a Bank Street Best Book, and a nominee for the OLA Blue Spruce Award and the Kentucky Bluegrass Award, among others. Karen lives in Toronto, Ontario.

From the creators of A World of Kindness, a meditative, sensory picture book with arresting art from fourteen illustrators featuring several exciting new artists

I am here. I know who I am. I breathe in the smell of sun-warmed grass and it fills my lungs with energy.

Parents, educators, and health practitioners everywhere are recognizing the importance of mindfulness practice, particularly for children. Meditation and yoga are becom-ing common activities in kindergarten classes and beyond. Taking time to be still and pay attention to their thoughts and bodies helps kids feel calm, focused, and in control. In A World of Mindfulness, meditative text reflects on the sensory ways children experience life, from the feeling of

their muscles when they run…to the sound of a turning page…to the memory-laden taste of fresh-baked cook-ies. Positive and negative emotions are alike acknowledged and affirmed, and a strong sense of self is reinforced.

Richly illustrated by fourteen artists with all-new original art, A World of Mindfulness will create its own quiet mo-ments as children revisit its lavish pages. A closing note about mindfulness practice rounds out this picture book, making it a helpful resource for homes, classrooms, and beyond.

Mel TregonningHaving captured thousands of hearts with its wordless honesty about childhood anxiety, the USBBY Outstanding International Book and Foreword INDIES Bronze Winner with an exceptional three starred reviews returns in two new formats.

In this short, wordless graphic picture book, a young boy feels alone with his anxiety. He isn’t fitting in well at school. His grades are slipping. He’s even lashing out at those who love him.

Talented Australian artist Mel Tregonning created Small Things in the final year of her life. In her emotionally rich illustrations, the boy’s worries manifest as tiny beings that crowd around him constantly, overwhelming him and even gnawing away at his very self. The striking imagery is all the more powerful when, overcoming his isolation at last, the boy discovers that the tiny demons of worry surround everyone, even those who seem to have it all together.

This short but hard-hitting wordless graphic picture book gets to the heart of childhood anxiety and opens the way for dialogue about acceptance, vulnerability, and the universal experience of worry.

“More than a moving portrayal of one boy’s struggle, this is also a magnifying lens through which to identify and discuss mental illness with readers of all ages....Small Things’ effects are monumental.”—Booklist Starred Review

“A sympathetic examination of anxiety that never assigns blame.”—School Library Journal  Starred Review

Sara Leachillustrated by

Rebecca BenderThe third title in the collection that began with USBBY Outstanding International Book Slug Days. Lauren, a third-grade student who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, takes on the challenges of sharing her best friend and persevering when a classmate mocks her bicycle’s training wheels.

Irma is Lauren’s best friend. Irma knows all the strate-gies Lauren uses when her Autism Spectrum Disorder makes it hard to “go with the flow.” Lauren helps Irma learn English words and understand unfamiliar customs. So why does Irma suddenly want to introduce Lauren to her mountain-biking, litter-dropping neighbor Jonas? Why is Irma calling Jonas her friend?

As if sharing Irma weren’t bad enough, Lauren also has an alarming new problem at school. Their teacher has an-nounced a mountain biking day when the students will learn to ride their bikes on an obstacle course. But Lauren

still uses training wheels. She just can’t face the teasing she will get when her classmates see them. She isn’t brave like Irma. She can’t go with the flow like Dad. How can she possibly face this challenge?

From author Sara Leach and illustrator Rebecca Bender comes an honest and warm-hearted successor to the crit-ically acclaimed Slug Days and Penguin Days. With straight-forward text and frequent black-and-white illustrations, Duck Days is an accessible chapter book for any young reader with mountains of their own to climb.

Sara Leach hails from Whistler, BC, where she loves to ski, hike and bike. Her middle grade novel Count Me In won the Red Cedar Book Award for 2012/13. In addition to being a children’s author, she is also an elementary school teacher-librarian. She has had the privilege of teaching several amazing students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and her experience working with them inspired her chapter books Slug Days, Penguin Days, and Duck Days.

Rebecca Bender is a well-loved author-illustrator of children’s books as well as an art director and designer. Her books include the popular Giraffe and Bird collection, How Do You Feel? and the illustrations for Peach Girl by Raymond Namakura, as well as those for the acclaimed Slug Days, Penguin Days, and Duck Days written by Sara Leach. Rebecca’s awards and honors include the OLA Blue Spruce Award, a Cooperative Children’s Book Center best-of-the-year choice, and a Toronto Pub-lic Library best-of-the-year selection. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design at the top of her class, earning the Medal for

Illustration. Rebecca lives in Burlington, Ontario, with her husband and two children.

Sue Farrell Holler is the Governor General’s Award-nominated author of the YA novel Cold White Sun as well as the middle-grade novel Lacey and the African Grandmothers and several picture books. Sue grew up on Cape Breton Island, Nova Sco-tia, where she wrote avidly to more than a hundred pen pals across North America. She later channelled her passion for writing into journalism studies at the University of King’s College in Halifax. Sue has lived in the Northwest Territories and today resides in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Jennifer Faria Lipke is an illustrator, graphic designer, and paint-er who studied at Central Technical School and George Brown College in Toronto. Her works can be found in the collections of celebrities, politicians, and especially parents, as one of her specialties is portraits of babies and small children. Jennifer is a member of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and drew on her Indigenous heritage in illustrating Raven, Rabbit, Deer, her first picture book. She lives in Burlington, Ontario with her husband and three children.

Sue Farrell Hollerillustrated by

Jennifer Faria LipkeA boy greets animal neighbors on a snowy walk, learning their names and tracks from his beloved grandfather.

In an intergenerational winter’s story full of quiet wonder, a little boy takes his grandfather for a walk down a forest trail. The boy shows Grandpa how to jump in the snow and how to make it make it splash into the creek. Grandpa shows the boy rabbit tracks and deer hiding among the trees. They greet their animal neighbors by name: Raven, Rabbit, Deer, Sparrow. Back home, the little boy sets the table with cookies while Grandpa pours the milk. It has been a glorious afternoon, and soon there will be books and blankets and the big armchair by the fire.

In Raven, Rabbit, Deer, Governor General Award-nom-inated author Sue Farrell Holler casts a spell of simple wonder as a small child earnestly sets out to take care of his grandfather for the day. Grandpa wisely gratifies this sweet self-importance while passing on important lessons: how to greet a raven…how to know a deer’s tracks…how to be family. Illustrator Jennifer Faria Lipke, a mem-ber of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, draws on her Indigenous heritage in illustrations so cozy they make the winter’s day feel warm.

Deborah Kerbelillustrated by

Miki SatoSparkling rhyme and unique collage illustrations celebrate all the activities snow makes possible for preschoolers and all the emotions it inspires.

First snow, surprise snow:Nature’s sparkly magic show

For small children, snow is a wonder. It sparkles and glit-ters. It transforms the outside world. Every kind of snow brings its own magic. It invites snow angels, skating, fort-building, and snowballs. Even blizzard days are exciting, when routines are overturned and everyone bands to-gether to clear the snow away. For the youngest among us, winter is magical.

In Snow Days, author Deborah Kerbel captures that magic with nimble couplets that celebrate every kind of winter pleasure. Illustrator Miki Sato’s fascinating textural collage art looks intimately touchable. She recreates the coziness and spectacle of the season in paper, felt, and embroidery silk, creating masterpieces that invite readers to look again and again.

Deborah Kerbel is the author of several picture books, in-cluding Before You Were Born, When Molly Drew Dogs, and the award-winning Sun Dog, as well as novels for middle grade and young adult readers. Born in London, England, she moved to Canada at the age of two and went on to attend the University of Western Ontario. Her novels have been shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Canadian Library As-sociation YA Book of the Year, and the Manitoba Young Read-er’s Choice Award. Deborah lives in Thornhill, Ontario, with

her husband, two book-loving children, and a schnoodle named Alfredo.

Miki Sato is a Japanese-Canadian illustrator who uses a variety of different textures and materials to create three-dimension-al images. Originally from Ottawa, she moved to Toronto to complete her degree in illustration from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Her first picture books are Golden Threads written by Suzanne Del Rizzo and Snow Days written by Debo-rah Kerbel.
