Summer School Statistics If you were a member in August of 2013 you may remember that OLLI summer classes were few and far between. A total of eight classes were offered that year and 85 members took advantage of those eight OLLI summer school classes.

Fast forward to August 2016 and the summer school scene changes drastically. A total of 31 classes were offered this year and 175 members attended.

Statistically speaking that equates to a 288% increase in OLLI summer classes and a 105% increase in the number of participants. Summer school seems to be gaining appeal . . . or was it the air conditioned classrooms?? Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Neil Simon and his brother Danny both wrote for Sid Caesar in the early 1950s along with Mel Brooks,

Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca, Woody Allen and Larry Gelbart all of whom went on to successful careers

both in television and on Broadway.

So, take a day for yourself and enjoy the show! The cost is $85 which includes transportation, lunch,

gratuity and theater ticket. Call the office to sign up – 513-1377 or mail in your request to register

and send a check. Questions? Call Peg Fargo at 226-4574 or email mailto:[email protected].

Join OLLI friends for a day out with lunch and a theater matinee. We’ll

take a bus to Meredith and have lunch at Guiseppe’s, then travel to the

Playhouse for Laughter on the 23rd Floor. The play was written by Neil

Simon, who writes with affection about a time when the television audience

made the Sunday night Show of Shows a family affair not to be missed.

Now Hear This: Tips for Presenters and Class Attendees The OLLI National Resource Center offers suggestions for the OLLI Classroom to help members with hearing difficulties. Click here for the full text. Some highlights: Speaker should face the audience and not block the audience’s view of your mouth. Lip movement is a visual cue that promotes understanding. Use assistive devices, i.e., microphones if available. Listeners should sit close to the speaker (yes, go to the front of the class!), feel free to ask the speaker to speak louder and wear/use assistive devices. Environment: Use movie subtitles consistently, turn off noisy equipment when not in use, rearrange classroom set-up to minimize distance between speaker and class.

The highlight of the meeting will be a presentation by acclaimed climbers Rick and Celia Wilcox who will take us on a virtual journey trekking through the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest. More information about Rick and Celia can be found in a separate article on the next page. Conway OLLI members are looking forward to meeting and greeting many of you on September 22.

If you have not yet registered, there is still time – the deadline is Friday, September 9, and the cost per person is $28.00. You can either register online (click here: OLLI Annual Meeting Online Registration Form), with a credit card by calling (603) 513-1377, or by mailing a check to OLLI at GSC, 25 Hall Street, Concord NH 03301. The Conway OLLI site is delighted to host the meeting this year and encourages everyone to come north to enjoy this beautiful area of New Hampshire. Purity Spring is a wonderful, four-season resort which is located about 12 miles south of North Conway village. Offering miles of hiking trails, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, it’s an ideal place to spend an early fall day. If you decide to take advantage of the discounted lodging rate - $99 for two which includes a full country breakfast – there is also an indoor pool/hot tub, a fitness room, and massage therapy available. Call 367-8896 to book your room, and be sure to mention that you are with the OLLI event. North Conway Village is only 12 miles north of Purity Spring and features such attractions as the Conway Scenic Railroad, the Weather Discovery Center and, of course, the outlet shopping center at Settlers Green. Heading further north, you can take the Mt. Washington Auto Road to “the top of the world” or opt for the Cog Railway to get those amazing summit views. For the golf enthusiasts there are three courses right in the area: North Conway Golf Club, Hales Location, and Indian Mound in Ossipee. Sounds great, doesn’t it! However, one of the best and most important reasons to attend this Second Annual Meeting is to gather with OLLI members from around the state to celebrate the growth and vitality of our wonderful organization. After enjoying a delicious breakfast buffet, we will have an opportunity to hear from Jane Fletcher, the OLLI Director, and also from Sharon Kace who is the new Chair of the Steering Committee.

Through the efforts of the Fund Development Team, the Annual Meeting will be sponsored by Silverstone Living, a nonprofit organization providing living options in the Nashua area for adults over age 62.

Hooray for Generous Donors!

Submitted by Sandy O’Neill, Development Committee

OLLI at GSC is working to become a place where there is a “Culture of Giving.”

It appears that we are one step closer very early in our fiscal year; $1,125 has been donated to OLLI since July 1

by individual members. Corporate donations have totaled $3,000 out of the $5,000 that the Development Team

is trying to raise.

OLLI is growing at a very rapid rate here in NH. As an organization we look forward to providing our members

with quality courses, experiences, travel, and social activities. If everyone in our organization who enjoys OLLI

donates to OLLI, our annual goal of $25,000 will be met easily.

Consider joining this culture of giving. Join our early donors and be a part of making this wonderful organization

even better!

Rick and Celia Wilcox Taking Us to New Heights

Submitted by Patti Rau, Class of 2010

The speakers at this year’s OLLI Annual Meeting are Conway’s version of Clark Kent/Superman. In normal life they own and operate International Mountain Equipment (IME) in North Conway.

But then, they step into some fantasy phone booth and emerge as world class climbers, but not just climbers. Expedition guides and rescue teams are actually part of the Wilcoxes’ “normal” life.

Rick has guided over 50 expeditions to peaks in most major climbing areas around the world, mountains over 18,000 feet, including 35 expeditions to the Himalayas. He was one of the first Americans east of the Mississippi to summit Mt. Everest in 1991. And he will share these experiences along with tales of the devastating avalanche in 2015 that killed a number of Sherpa guides.

Celia shares Rick’s passion for being in the mountains either hiking or climbing. She joined Rick in the business in 1995, and in 1997 International Trekking and Climbing was born. Since that time they have been coleaders of 20 treks/climbs in Nepal and eight Kilimanjaro climbs. She is certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid, which allows her to assist both their customers and others they meet along the trails. She takes care of all the logistics so everyone can enjoy the total experience as it becomes a lasting memory.

Together they have a passion for giving their customers and clients the best technical gear, clothing and the best possible experience whether it’s planning a local mountain adventure, rock climbing or an expedition to the top of the world!

He started his career as a Retail Manager for Eastern Mountain Sports and later became President of the EMS Climbing School. In 1974 Rick became President and Primary Team Leader of Mountain Rescue Service, Inc., a technical team that has performed over 500 technical rescues since 1972 on rocks, cliffs and ice faces. In 1979, he purchased IME and in 1986 purchased the IME Climbing School.

He has served as Secretary to the American Alpine Club under three Presidents and for 6 years was a director of the American Mountain Guides Association and Vice President.

Seacoast Fall Preview Submitted by Sandy O’Neill, Class of 2013

On a beautiful day in Portsmouth, visitors to the Tall Ships vied with OLLI members for parking spaces, but a good showing at the Portsmouth Library enjoyed refreshments and presenter speeches.

The greater danger for most of

us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and

achieving our mark.

Manchester Fall Preview Submitted by Mary Rheault, Class of 2011

Friday, August 12, 2016 started out as a truly hot day very early in the morning. The heat did not keep Preview attendees away including Manchester OLLI members, guests and a number of members visiting from other sites.

Bethany Covenant Church was a very busy place as many people came early, registered and had delicious morning treats. Some 180 listened to presenters who enticed us to the point where we are probably going to have a difficult decision to make when signing up for the fall offerings. Double slides highlighted a summary of the class offering as the presenter spoke thanks to the efforts of Su Bennett and her assistant from Bethany Covenant Church.

Fans in the main areas of the church tried, somewhat unsuccessfully, to keep us comfortable, but the excitement of hearing about the classes and leafing through the new Fall Catalog provided enough distraction so that pretty much everyone survived. At least no one seemed to leave because of this rather warm atmosphere.

The good turnout afforded everyone extra time to select courses before actual registration began on Monday. Members also enthusiastically took plenty of catalogs to distribute around their communities. Kudos to Jan Gagne, Su Bennett and all those who helped with this event.

And at the Concord Fall Preview . . .

Pictured at left, Pam Saulten, Central Committee Chair, presides. Below, Claira Monier describes her class, “Are Elections Rigged?” Next, a warm, but intent audience checks out the new catalogs Bottom, Fran Wiggin, right, gets some expert advice on what classes to take.

Left, Karen Berry and her surrogate (stuffed) alpaca. “The real alpacas wouldn’t behave very well at the Preview.” But it was covered in real alpaca fiber – soft! Below, attentive audience heard from over 25 presenters.

Registration – Lotsa papers!
