We know you are busy so we created I a podcast so you can connect with colleagues and experts on a range of cool topics while you drive, exercise, or just relax at home. Come to this fun workshop to find out how podcasting works and how you could actually create a podcast for your students or program - or maybe just propose ideas for future episodes. Participants will get their hands on equipment to help make a podcast episode and you'll even get your own free set of earbuds! It'll be magical!

C Interactive Q&A with ACCESS 6-160

Faculty are faced with a myriad of classroom issues, which can become challenges as well as opportunities to enrich the teaching-learning experience. One such opportunity is successfully engaging students with disabilities, medical conditions, and other "barriers" in the teaching and learning process.

Do you have a burning question about ACCESS services, instruction, and students? Attend the Q&A with ACCESS! In a moderated panel and highly interactive session, ACCESS professionals will be on hand to answer your questions about students, services, and issues. After brief introductions, the audience will provide the meat of this session by engaging ACCESS professionals in a productive, question and answer session.

Learn practical ways to implement equity-centered pedagogy to close the equity gap and increase student success in your classes. Attend this work session with a team from your department to develop practical ways to integrate equity-focused approaches into your curriculum.

E Safe Space Training – Affirming Practices for Supporting LGBTQIA+ Students 11-2402

Presenters: Melinda Bowen, Erin Pollard, Madison Stute

During this workshop, we will have a presentation by Erin Pollard, a Gender Affirming Therapist in private practice as well as an Adjunct Counselor at Irvine Valley College. This presentation will describe the difference between gender and sexuality and will teach respectful communication around gender and sexual diversity. In addition, Erin will delve deeper into the effects that our society can have upon our LGBTQ + youth in education as well as the mental health impacts of gender, sexuality, dysphoria, transitioning, and experiencing acceptance or rejection from family and friends. We will then introduce a teachers’ toolkit that prepares faculty to help the LBGTQ + community be safe and successful in the classroom. We finish up by sharing the resources available through the Pride Center for faculty and students.

F Developing a Cross-Campus Approach to Addressing Basic Needs Insecurities at Mt. SAC

A growing body of literature reveals that many college students do not have access to affordable, nutritious food, stable housing, and other basic needs. The lack of access to food and housing goes beyond romanticized or nostalgic notions of couch surfing and eating instant ramen. These problems are serious, widespread, and impact student success and retention.

To address how hunger and other basic needs insecurities manifest themselves in our classrooms, centers, and throughout campus, we must recognize that these problems exist in all of these locations. We must also recognize that they permeate all aspects of students’ lives including their health, wellness, and academic performance. Bringing about transformative, sustainable, and effective networks of support requires that we work together and outside of our silos.

This presentation will summarize major findings from recent studies to provide the scope of basic needs insecurities among college students. We will discuss ways faculty and staff can recognize when students are experiencing basic needs insecurities and how to address them. Presenters will also share what the Homelessness and Basic Resources Committee and Student Equity projects have accomplished thus far and brainstorm ideas for ways the campus can address basic needs insecurities through cross-campus collaboration, communication, and individual actions taken in our daily work.

Changes in state and federal policies and funding continue at a rapid pace. This session will give participants the opportunity to hear how Mt. SAC is adapting to those changes and to answer questions on matters of concern and interest.

H Working with Foster Youth on Campus: Trauma Informed Care Best Practices 61-2320

The purpose of this training is to offer faculty some best practices to follow when they have foster youth students that have been trauma impacted, in their classroom. Training will offer tips on how to better serve these students, improve the classroom environment to make it more welcoming for those students and how trauma may express itself in certain classroom behaviors.

I The Minority Male Initiative: Addressing Mt. SAC’s Most Significant Equity Gap 61-2316

Presenters: Audrey Yamagata-Noji, Clarence Banks, Francisco Dorame, Jeremy Hart, Tony Rivas, Felix Ricarte, Sectino Bradley

Mt. SAC's equity research reinforces what most of us already know: Latino, African American and Polynesian males have the lowest success rates at Mt. SAC. The Minority Male Initiative was developed to focus on strategies to address these unacceptable equity gaps. This session will present the work that has been done to date and will provide faculty with insights on what can be done to bridge these gaps. Specific strategies include: student development (code switching, locus of control, social capital, imposter syndrome), student success intervention (career direction, student leadership development, in-reach, mentoring, Fale Fono and Indaba), academic support (math boot camp, study support, overcoming math anxiety).

J Guided Pathways & Equity: Upward Mobility and the Elusive “Underground Pathways” for Today’s Community College Students

In this workshop, I will discuss the book, the Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, and connect the book's major themes to contemporary issues that still limit the ability of many students to follow our "guided pathways" into better economic and educational circles of society.

K Digital Stories: Student Narratives from a Cross-Section of Student Equity Programs 61-2311

Equity draws attention to the disparities in educational experiences and outcomes among a diverse group of students. The selected digital stories for this presentation give insight to how our students' educational experiences may have been impacted by life events and people. This third cohort of Digital Storytellers represent ACES, Arise, Aspire, DREAM and REACH; each student participant has worked diligently to share their powerful narratives. Be prepared to critically reflect on how their story informs us about their humanity and more importantly encourage us, in our role as educators, to humanize their higher education journey as Mt. SAC students scholars. Consider how it may transform your teaching pedagogy, contribute to your professional development, and enhance your knowledge in your role as an educator. Together, we are responding to social disparities among our local communities, which are a part of our mindfulness of a dynamic student equity agenda.

L Considering Teaching Online? DL Start to Finish 6-263 POD Loft – Smart Lab

Faculty have been urged to increase online course offerings in their disciplines. Although some faculty have been teaching online for years, the process seems opaque to many. This presentation has been designed for faculty who would like to begin teaching online or want more information, but do not know where to start. It will include a brief orientation to SPOT Canvas, an introduction on how to submit a course through the DL Amendment process, and a discussion of how evaluations for online courses differ from face to face course evaluations. There will be time reserved at the end for faculty to ask questions.

M Making at the Mountie Makerspace F7

Learn how to leverage fabrication and digital design in your courses. Join us at the Mt. SAC makerspace to become a member and do some making. Learn about 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing and a variety of other techniques. We will take you through the available equipment and share ideas about how you can use the space with your students or for personal projects. Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Technical skills needed for this workshop are beginner level.

Ready to read? This session will introduce everyone to the selected text, a hilarious book called Hyperbole and a Half, by Allie Brosch. We'll learn about the origins of the book, the surprising personal story of the author and artist, and have a short pre-discussion. We'll also talk about future discussion groups and set some group meeting times and locations for a book club around the book. Participants will get a free copy of the text.

D SI’s, TC’s, Coaches, and Tutors – What’s the Difference?

Mt. SAC offers students leadership opportunities and academic support, and in our tutoring and support centers they get just that; some are tutors and mentors, and others receive the tutoring and mentoring. This comes in the form of supplemental instructors, tutors in the classroom, coaches, peer tutors and professional tutors, but what are the differences between these services and just how do these services collaborate with faculty to support our students’ success? This presentation serves to inform faculty and staff on the relationship between these employees, students, and faculty in and outside the classroom. Each resource will designate a lead presenter to explain the details of the service, hiring process and qualifications, and if applicable relate the resource back to specific programs and/or departments that use that resource.

E Create an Active Learning Environment Using Technology to Organize Your Classroom

Please join two math professors as we share the technology we use in our classrooms. Lisa will share how she uses Go Formative and Quizlet Live to engage her students and encourage participation. Paula will discuss how she uses an iPad and the Notability app to organize her files and present material to her students to encourage interaction and discussion. F Disaster Service Workers and Campus Emergency Response

Presenters: Melonee Cruse, Chris Haukom Session will provide an overview of MT. SAC Disaster Service Worker (DSW) roles and responsibilities during a

campus emergency. Topics will include: laws/regulations, preparedness, notification and alerts, emergency procedures, building and campus evacuations, as well as address emergency procedures and safety during class and special events.

This session will be interactive providing the participants with scenarios they must discuss, and respond to, as a group. Participants will receive tools and supplies to equipment them for their role as a DSW.

H Mt. SAC's Behavior & Wellness Team: Guiding the Campus Community in Effectively Assessing and Addressing Concerning and/or Threatening Student Behavior

Our students may display behaviors such a sudden change in academic performance, housing and/or food insecurities, concerning verbal or written statements, changes in behavior or appearance, or extreme emotions as a result of a life event. Mt. SAC’s Behavior & Wellness Team (B&WT) is a multidisciplinary campus team that guides the campus community in effectively assessing and addressing these concerns. As a member of the National Behavior Intervention Team Association (NaBITA), the BWT has been trained to assess and determine possible interventions. This session will cover the history, and structure of the Behavior & Wellness team, including an overview of the decision-making process, the referral process, confidentiality, and partnering with the reporting parties.

J Navigating Unchartered AB 705 Waters: How to Manage Writing for Our New Wave of English Language Learners in Content Area Classrooms

With the implementation of AB-705 and multiple measures, in the Fall of 2018, content-area professors may encounter English Language Learners (ELLs) whose language skills may not be as well developed as in the past and who may have had limited exposure and experience with academic college English coursework. This workshop addresses a number of issues that faculty may experience in these post-AB-705 waters, including applying pedagogical best practices for NNES students, highlighting Mt. SAC support services for academic writing skills, finding practical solutions for cultural conflicts, and understanding ELLs and adapting to their instructional needs.

A panel of professors who have been teaching classes composed entirely of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students will present their experiences and lessons learned. These classes have shown an increased success rate while maintaining college standards with adjustments considered in regards to Deaf culture, differences between ASL and English, and the effects of Language Deprivation Syndrome. Our goal is for all faculty to feel more comfortable when working with DHH students. The last two years have been a learning experience for all of us and we would like to share that journey with you.

Now that program sequence maps have been completed for certificates and degrees offered at Mt. SAC, explore the next steps in engaging students in a course of study and supporting them in completing their programs. Identify program-specific supports as well as approaches for engaging in conversations with K-12 and 4-year partners. Bring a discipline-specific team to continue work on Guided Pathways.

In this session, get the inside scoop on Canvas moves that make managing your courses easier. Sometimes, things that should seem obvious end up hidden in plain sight. Mt. SAC's Faculty Center for Learning Technology team wants to ensure that these great Canvas tools and functions don't remain a secret! In this workshop they pull back the covers on a range of useful yet underutilized functions in Canvas. Learn how to manage course files and modules quickly. Find out how to review a student's activity in a course. Discover features and apps available right now in Canvas if you only knew where to enable them. Plus, get "the skinny" on the resources and support options professors can use whenever they want to learn more! Canvas beginners and intermediate users will benefit most, and advanced users are also welcome. This workshop is unlikely to be useful to those who have no experience with the Canvas LMS.
