Fall Survey Key FindingsCommunication
34
• Communication preferences data mirrors the 2012 survey results, with top sources for parents as District and school e-newsletters, the website, the PTO and information sent home in students backpacks. Media continues to be residents’ top source, followed by word of mouth. Staff rely primarily on their e-newsletter, principal, colleagues, school meetings, and emails.
• Communication challenges were cited in regard to timeliness and clarity around key issues, such as changes to curriculum and major Board decisions.
• There is a noteworthy gap in perception around the providing of a high quality of education between parents and residents compared to staff.
• The perception around transparency is a concern we will need to address.
• The perception around Board partnership and communication is also a concern to address, with a considerable gap between constituents in these areas.
• The strongest and most consistent area is positive and welcoming environment
• School-specific data from parents was overall strong, especially in opportunities to be involved, communication and environment. Transparency was again a concern.
Fall Survey Key FindingsLearning
35
•While staff awareness of the Learning for All Plan is strong, parent and resident awareness is not. It is evident understanding around the impact of the Plan on students, staff and the District is a major communications need.
• Similarly, staff awareness around the Common Core and PARCC assessment are fairly strong, parent and resident education on these issues is also a major need.
• Those indicating that understanding and awareness are low are not necessarily looking for more information.
Fall Survey Key FindingsVision: Students and Learning
36
• In Students and Learning, alignment around 2020 Vision questions is strong throughout the three constituent groups.
• In Students and Learning, top priorities include students as creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers, recruiting and retaining the best staff, bully-free schools, technology, global awareness, fine arts, staff professional development, and world languages.
• In Students and Learning, non-priorities include longer school years, longer school days, multi-age classrooms, and state / national rankings.
• Full-day kindergarten seemed to be the most polarizing issue, with some strong support but some noting it as “not important.”
37
• In Finances and Facilities, alignment around 2020 Vision questions is again strong throughout the three constituent groups.
• In Finances and Facilities, top priorities include updated curriculum resources, equitable equipment and technology, integrated technology, balanced budget, small class sizes, equity between schools in class size and safety improvements.
• In Finances and Facilities, non-priorities include flexible learning spaces, elimination of HMS modules, and increased use of outdoor classrooms. Lower property taxes and having a cost per pupil in line with neighboring districts are also low priority items.
•Merit-based pay was a polarizing issue.
Fall Survey Key FindingsVision: Finances and Facilities
38
• In Community Involvement, alignment around 2020 Vision questions is again strong throughout the three constituent groups.
• In Community Involvement, top priorities include community confidence, opportunities for the community to engage with the Board and opportunities for the community to attend school events.
• In Community Involvement, non-priorities include advertising, involvement of business leaders and job shadowing.
Fall Survey Key FindingsVision: Community Involvement
39
• SELAS awareness among parents is relatively strong, but not as strong among residents. Various concepts were more familiar than others.
• For parents, the strongest sources of SELAS information are school activities, the District e-newsletter, curriculum night and the school / PTO newsletter. For residents, current sources are media and school activities.
• The comments in these questions indicate a divide in support for SELAS instruction and a need for further communication around social emotional learning in schools.
• Staff understanding is strong in SEL standards. School activities, teachable moments, curriculum nights, cooperative projects, and integration in academic areas are the primary ways information is shared by staff. SELAS information is primarily learned through staff meetings, the principal, the staff e-newsletter and from colleagues.
Fall Survey Key FindingsSELAS
40
• Staff results around preparation for 2013-14 show that understanding of the evaluation process is very strong and the increased knowledge in curriculum, assessment and instruction is fairly strong.
• Areas of concern are primarily around technology understanding and use. Comments in this area indicate that lack of devices has been a detractor from stronger knowledge and use.
• Time is staggered between 1-20+ hours for the approx. 70% of staff who engaged in professional development through the District or independently.
• Approximately 34-37% of staff did not feel prepared for the start of the school year, an area of major concern.
Fall Survey Key FindingsStaff Preparation
Fall Survey Next Steps
41
• Survey results and the Visioning Workshop executive summary will be published on the same webpage where the surveys were accessed: www.d181.org > Board > Surveys / Engagement
• Schools will review the data as part of their school improvement planning efforts.
• The administrative team will review the data to reflect on current practices and how information around those practices is communicated to parents, residents and staff.
•At a future Board meeting, the Board will engage in a deeper discussion around extending the District’s five-year plan.
