1 Fall 2016 Ohio Valley IFT News Hello OVIFT Members! Next Events There are so many wonderful things to love about fall; the beautiful color in nature, the start of cooler weather, football and of course, the start of another year of OVIFT. This year is a particularly special year for me, as I have the pleasure of serving a second term as Chair for our section. Something you may not know is that the Ohio Valley Section has been named for a second year in a row as a Section of Excellence! This award is given in recognition of our section’s commitment to IFT, our members and the food science and technology profession. We continue to be seen as a section leader because of the outstanding volunteers we have in our section, some of whom were named by IFT as outstanding sections volunteers. Congratulations to Natalie McElwee, Paul Bluman, John Black and Jennifer Lessick on your award and thank you for your commitment to our section! The Executive Board has been working hard over the past months to plan some new and exciting events for the coming year! We officially kicked off our year with our annual event at Valley Vineyard in September and will close out our year with our Annual Gold Outing and Supplier’s Expo in April 2017. I would like to invite each and every one of you to come join us at least one event this year! We are always looking for new ideas for event or topics that you would like to be covered in our meetings. If you have any suggestions please reach out to me or any of the Board Members. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as the OVIFT Chair for the second year in a row! I truly pleasure serving Ohio Valley IFT in this capacity. I look forward to working with you and hopefully seeing you all at one of our events this year! MEETINGS/EVENTS IN REVIEW

On September 21, 2016 our year started with the event at Valley Vine-yards. We had the opportunity to have our own local member, who is now member of IFT Board of Directors, Dr Sarah Kirkmeyer, Ph.D., CFS., Director of Consumer Sensory Insights at Givaudan Flavors.

The subject of Dr Sarah’s presentation was “Getting involved with IFT”, where she talked about IFT’s vision, mission and network; also highlight-ing the importance of volunteering; the role of feeding tomorrow; the great partnership with other organizations and how OVIFT fits in all that.

At the end, our feast started. Participants grilled out their food in the outside grill.

For whom never participated, this is a hands on and exciting event!

September: Valley Vineyards

Thanks to Anna Donovan for organizing this event.

Did you know that Feeding Tomorrow

awards nearly 75 scholarships to undergrad-

uate and graduate students pursuing degrees

in the variety of sciences related to food?

She also shared her history as volun-teer thru her many years as food sci-ence professional.

MEETINGS/EVENTS IN REVIEW

On October 27, 2016 OVIFT had the opportunity to have an event at the Kitchens at Wendy’s International Innovation Center, in Dublin OH. An outstanding crowd of 70 participants !

Chris Scott, Culinary Innovation Kitchen Supervisor did a great job or-

ganizing a tour of the Kitchens as well as Marshall Scarborough .

Talking about Innovation, we had Michael Krimmer. He went thru the

“roller-coaster” of the development process and highlighted the trials and errors that such a complex decision flow can experience.

The complimentary side, Stefani Craze explained how Sensory panels are setup and how inter-

nal and external people are chosen as tasters, depending on the outcome they want to get. It all depends on the pre-screening selection of the right audience. During the presentation, the group had the change to taste Frosty & Fries !

After the tour, the group headed to La Scala, an Italian restaurant in the vicinity, where the group were served o’dourves and had the chance to mingle and network .

October: Wendy’s Tour

Thanks to Lisa Davis for organizing this event.

Like mentioned by Kelly, our Chair, IFT mentioned our section on their Annual Report and it reads: The Ohio Valley Section held eight events in 2015-2016, including a pulse ingredients presentation at Valley Vineyards, “Big Plants, Small Plates” at Kroger Bakery, “Dinner from Around Here” at Whole Foods Market, “Trends in Food Technology” at MadTree Brewing, and a mixology demo at Myrtles’s Punch House. In addition, they attracted 56 attendees to their Annual Golf Outing and 243 attendees to their supplier’s expo. They also held a Volunteer Event at Urban Farms, a student poster competition, a student scholarship competition, and a Volunteer Event in conjuctions with the IFTSA chapter of the Ohio State University at Ronald McDonald House. In the next page you can see a short bio of our Board Members for the current year (2016-2017), who dedicate their time to organize the events , charities and scholarship that we mentioned in this newslet-ters and future ones.
