National Committee Meeting March 19th, 2017

The 2018 BMDCA National Specialty Show Committee will hold a working meeting in conjunction with the BMDCNV Annual

Meeting at the Sturbridge Host Hotel on March 19th. The meeting begins after lunch and serves as the kick-off of the final 12 month campaign

to bring the National to success. Don’t miss this great opportunity; see what’s going on and explore the

many options for getting involved in the National. Start making your special National memories by

helping make the National truly special!

National Specialty Update 2018 BMDCA National News

How you can be a part of the 2018 National! By Pat Long, Berwyn, PA; Long Shots Photography

If you have never been to a BMDCA National Specialty, you don’t know what you’re missing! But you’re lucky, the 2018 Specialty will be in your backyard. Not only that, but we will all be in a position of helping to make it the biggest and best one ever! I’ve always called it a week long Berner slumber party, and you can count on wall to wall fun and activities with other like-minded Berner lovers. You’ll want to leave plenty of time to just enjoy the events, but if you can dedicate a few hours to help out with all of the various aspects of the Specialty, it can benefit you just as much as it can help the event. Here are just a few ways to do that.

Volunteering to help in advance of the Specialty is the easy part. If you live near the show site, you can help committee chairs in any number of ways. If you have space that can be used to store materials, let them know! If you can help with transporting judges to and from the airport, let them know! You’ll be in the unique position of learning the show site and be able to help direct people the week of the show.

For the show itself, there are so many ways to help out. If you like to put faces and names together, volunteer some time at the registration table handing out the welcome bags. It’s a great way to meet everyone! If you enjoy getting up early and working with food, the daily hospitality setup is for you! If you like to count money and make change, the raffle table and Ways and Means tables are always looking for volunteers. If you have an interest in performance events like obedience, rally, agility, draft, tracking, herding, dock diving (OK, we haven’t added dock diving yet, thank goodness!), then volunteer some time to steward for the event. You’ll get an up close and personal look at what’s involved, and be better prepared when you finally take the plunge. These are only a very few suggestions, there are many more ways to help. Take a close look at the tentative schedule when it becomes available, and map out what you absolutely want to see and do, and when

you’d be available to help volunteer even just a bit of your time.

But do be careful! Once the Specialty bug bites you, it may never let go! Next thing you know you’ll be talking about attending your 10th or 20th Specialty! My first one was in Rhode Island at the 1998 Specialty, and here it is in 2016 and I’ve attending every one since!

from the President...from the President...By Patricia Buickerwood, Acting President

As we look forward to 2017, we remember all the fun and exciting Berner events our club held in 2016. Thanks to the hard work of hundreds of great volunteers the BMDCNV supported or sponsored 16 events. These activities were all geared to further our mission to promote the welfare and well-being of Bernese Mountain Dogs. We had fun events including a Winter Walk, Spring and Fall Fun Days, two Summer Picnics, a Retreat Weekend, and closed the year with a wonderful Holiday Party. We also sponsored an OFA clinic for x-rays, conducted blood draws, and DNA cheek swabs at Spring Fun Day, and held health education seminars at both Fun Days. For conformation and draft, we held our Regional in June, sponsored four supported entries and held a two-day draft weekend concurrent with the Fall Fun Day. It is so gratifying to see our experienced drafters helping and encouraging newbies learn about carting with their Berners. BMDCNV has always been a leader in drafting and it looks like interest is surging.

Our BernerBlatt gets better with every issue. Each is full of great pictures, great stories and news about our dogs. I especially look forward to the Rescue and the Senior editions. Reading the rescue stories I’m awed at the time, effort, ingenuity, and – most especially - the love our families give these dogs. Improving the health and longevity of BMDs is an important part of the BMDCNV mission so it is wonderful celebrate our Seniors. Every year we have with our Berners is a gift.

On the media front, savvy club members have helped strengthen our social presence - Our BMDCNV Facebook maintains its lead as the most liked regional dog club (hurray!) and on Instagram we have nearly 400 followers! This opens the door for fantastic opportunities for education

to the general public about health, behavior, training, and sharing fun stories about our Berners. In fact, this area is growing so much that we really need a Social Media chairperson to help ensure that we put our best paws forward.

Our club continues to grow – we are over 500 strong and welcome new members every month. The great thing is that many of these new members come with their sleeves rolled up asking “How can I help?” When we need a special talent or helping hands we put out the call and somebody answers. This is what makes BMDCNV such a strong club and this is why Berner lovers want to join.

In the Fall 2016, we adjusted our Board of Directors to allow Marge Bumen to take some time off for her health. I moved to acting President and Sue Mahan moved to Vice President. This has meant a lot of adjustments for our Board and I am especially grateful to our Board members and the experienced volunteers who have gone out of their way to make things run so smoothly for our members and to Margie, who had things so well organized that it was easy for me to take over the wheel for a few months. We cannot wait for Marge to come back!

2017 promises to be another very exciting year. Along with our regular club events we will also be putting a lot of effort into helping the National BMDCA team prepare for the 2018 National Specialty when we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the BMDCA.

Club Notices:Club Notices:Leave of Absence Wishing all of our members and our Nashoba Berners a happy and healthy 2017. I will be taking a leave of absence from my duties as President this first quarter due to health reasons. Patricia Buickerood will assume the duties of President during my absence. Be well, be happy & see you in the Spring. – Marge Bumen, President

Retreat Weekend Ocean Park

On Veteran’s Day weekend, 42 people and 48 Berners came together for another successful retreat weekend in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The weather was perfect! Dogs and humans enjoyed a variety of activities and some much needed beach time! Thank you to our volunteers: Bill and Barbie Wilczek, Tressy and Cory Manning, Stephanie and Bill Freeman, Bill Brickach, Sue Morrill, Sue Nowak, and Lloyd and Lynn Jones. We couldn’t have done it without your help!

“We introduced our 6 1/2 month old Brook to carting at the workshop! She was so fearless as she proceeded through the stages of training. Brook wore her first harness, dragged the traces, then the wood, then the noisy milk jug over various terrain. After a few minutes of walking and touching her with the shafts, we hitched her up. Dan helped by picking up the training wheels

around the corners. We weren’t the only ones who accomplished great things!”

Our Fosters Are Getting Well!by Linda DeCelles, Rescue Chair

When BAER was under a year old he began having problems walking. He was in constant pain. He was diagnosed with OCD (osteochondritis dessicans) in his shoulders. Baer’s original owners could not afford the corrective surgery he needed and surrendered him to Berner Inc. Baer had surgery soon after. During his pre-surgical examination, surgeons had found a defect in his right knee as well. After successful surgery, Baer is expected to make a full recovery and live a normal, active life. Now he is getting physical therapy and hydrotherapy to build up strength in his shoulders and leg. Thank you, foster Karrie Kapoor, for taking Baer through his surgery and physical therapy!

KEELEY was surrendered to Berner Inc. due to a crisis in her former family’s life. We knew that two years ago she had ear hematomas from a previous infection and that her owners had not continued treatment. On the first night in her foster home, Keeley began howling and banging her head in pain. Veterinarians advised surgery as the only option to remove the deep deposits of bacteria and hardened tissue that Keeley’s untreated ears had developed. After surgery Keeley is pain-free and healing. The infection had made Keeley deaf—now she can hear again. Thank you, fosters Fran and Phil LaFlamme, for caring for Keeley pre- and post-surgery!

Berner, Inc. believes that every Berner deserves a happy, healthy life. We provide the medical and therapeutic care our rescues need. We rely on donations from Berner lovers to help us care for our deserving Berners. Thank you for your generous support!

Monthly Health Tip for keeping our Berners in tip-top shape! It’s a good Thing! It’s a good Thing!

11

If you’re reading this, you’ve loved a Berner. As you

all know, Bernese Mountain Dogs are a remarkable breed; once they take possession of your heart, they don’t let go. You may be quite content with the Berner(s) you have at the moment. But, if you’re like most of us, at some point you’ll be looking for another. Our breed used to be a well kept secret. When I got my first in 1986, everybody thought she was a St Bernard cross. Over the years since then, there has been a slow but steady increase in the demand for Berners. But in the last three years they’ve suddenly exploded into a “popular” breed. Consequently the puppy millers, hobby breeders, backyard breeders, and brokers have leapt all over the breed. The main difference between these folks and responsible Berner breeders is this: responsible breeders make sure the parents of any litter they produce have all the recommended Health Clearances for the breed – OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) CERTIFIED Hips, Elbows, Heart, and Eyes. Plus genetic testing for two hereditary diseases – vonWillebrand’s Disease (a bleeding disorder), and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM – a degeneration of the spinal cord from the rear forward). No breeder can absolutely guarantee that an issue won’t arise in a pup, but your odds of a healthy, sound pup go way up if these clearances have been done. Web surfing is tricky. For every responsible breeder you find, there are lots of not so responsible ones out there, with great looking websites. The safest place to start your search is the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Nashoba Valley www.bmdcnv.org and/or the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America www.bmdca.org

How to Find A Responsibly Bred Berner Puppyby Megan McTavish, BMDCNV Breeder Referral Program Chair

There’s a list of breeders on both sites – and all of them can be researched on our National Health Database – Berner-Garde – www.bernergarde.org Click into the B-G database, Click People to search for the breeder, click View on the dogs they are breeding. Then click Certs/Tests to see the health clearances they have done. Make sure the breeder you’re considering has all six clearances listed there – including both DM tests – SOD1A and SOD1B. If only a few clearances are there, feel free to question the breeder about the ones that are missing. If you can’t find somebody in Berner-Garde at

all, it’s a BIG RED FLAG.Responsible breeders have a screening process. Some have a questionnaire as their first step, some do a phone interview. But all of them will want to meet you in person before they place a pup with you. If someone doesn’t require you to visit them, it’s a BIG RED FLAG. Some responsible breeders ask for deposits – some do not. But the deposit should be refundable if something comes up and you cannot take the pup – or if there are no pups to be had. If someone wants a non-refundable deposit just to put your name on a list, it’s a BIG RED FLAG. Berners are amazingly wonderful dogs. Once you’ve made up your mind to look for another, I’m sure you’ll want one ASAP. But responsible breeders, by definition, do not volume breed. So you may need to be patient; it can take time to find a responsibly bred pup. Cast a wide net, and give the breeders you contact every chance to get to know you. And sooner or later you will find the pup you’re looking for. Best of luck to you!

Please maintain control while meeting others by leashing or sim-ply holding our dogs. Use your judgment on how dog friendly other patrons are and

show them respect. Also we have secured the Park for the entire day so anyone inter-ested is welcome to take another walk on their own afterward if they would like!
