    GE1'ERAL SUM!1ARY OF THE 1938 FOOTBALL SITUATION ( ---

Twent y-seven of the forty- one Iowa State Teachers Collec;c football

candidates ar e playing their fir st year of college f ootball, a sit-

uation which indicates the possibility of a lack of seasoned mat-

erial. The r emaining four teen men include eight lettermen, two

reserves ·who were in a few games, and four r eserves ·who saw a com-

bined total of less than 90 seconds of play. Truly not the sort

( of squad to give a coach many restful moments.

Coach Clyde L. Starbeck, and Art Dickinson and Oliver Nor dly, his

two assistant coaches, however, are fairly pleased with the squad-

mainly because of the fine spirit of the players and the general

good condition of all candidates. The team will not be bi g but it

vrill be rugged, determined, and f airly fast.

( Meeting eight strcng teams, including f our members of the North

Central conference, the Panthers will i'ace a really tough schedule,

but that is nothing new to them. The tough part of the sche dule

comes in the news the.t every team seems t o have gained sophomore

strength since last season ••• that every team is better t his year.

No prediction can be made as to the nu. ber of games that may be won,

no for ecast of the final position of the Panthers i n t he conference

standings will be hazarded - only t his promise comes out of the

Panther ' s Den - the team will be troublesome.

The schedule opens vnth Gri~~ell on October 1 and on successive

week ends the team vrill t ake on t he seven r emaininG opponents - a

season without a single breather f r om begin..-·1ing to end.
