Father’s and male caregiver literacy activities tend to be active or playbased. When telling a story they often act it out and or improvise ratherthen read it word for word. This is a wonderful way to informally model

literacy.

Recently a dad shared his experience in creating a fort with his children using a largecardboard box. A grandfather told us how he spent a fun afternoon building, decorating and flying paper airplanes through the house with his grandsons. Both admitted that they never even thought about the literacy they were modeling -they were “just having fun”.Some of the literacy skills that were used in both activities:

• Counting, choosing colors to decorate and writing on thefort and the airplanes.• Teamwork, patience with younger siblings, safety and sharing are all great examples of lifeskills learning.

Use your imagination and think of various ways thatyou as a male caregiver already use literacy when youplay with your children.

We welcome your ideas and stories. If you would like to share, pleaseemail:[email protected] more information call Trisha @ 780 -723-3630

Why do some kids grow up with ease, while others struggle?

The Power of One giving kids what they need to succeed

Everyone is invited to come to this free presentation by master story teller and youth advocate

Keith Pattinson

September 22, 7:00 pm Recreation Complex - Sundance Room

Please confirm your attendance by calling Community Services 723-4403.

We are so often made aware of problems among the youth in our community - tragic accidents, addiction issues, homelessness, and we feel a sense of helplessness. To many of us, the task of reaching out to youth, of impacting their lives in positive ways and really making a difference seems a daunting task. What we may not realize is that there are many simple actions that can make a huge difference in the lives of young people right here in our own neighbourhood.

Come learn about ideas and research sweeping the world and changing the way in which adults, children, and young people are working together to build healthier, more supportive environmenfrom this opportunity with a better understanding of why some kids appear to grow up with ease while others struggle; why some young people beat the odds in difficult situations while others get trapped.
