P IONEER T IMES DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PIONEER CHAPTER BOISE, IDAHO FALL / WINTER 2010 State Regent's Presentation November 13, 2010 Pioneer Chapter member Diane Manweiler, who is currently serving as the NSDAR Idaho State Regent, was the honored guest and speaker at our November meeting. Her presentation was titled the same as her Regent's theme, "Be A Star for DAR." She enlarged our knowledge and understanding of the four Founders of The Daughters of the American Revolution by giving their biographical sketches. State Regent Manweiler told the story of how, on October 11, 1890, Mary Desha, Mary S. Lockwood, Ellen Walworth and Eugenia Washington met with a group in Washington for the purpose of organizing our Society. Through their stories our Daughters see the importance of preserving the history of our country. State Regent Manweiler's presentation was very well received. ~ Judith Alexander Mr. David LeRoy October 2, 2010 With a voice ragged and raspy from a cold, and with many exciting artifacts he has acquired over the years to illustrate his points, David LeRoy talked to us about his love of History and for collecting items 'along the way.' Mr. LeRoy gave us examples of how he has learned by striking up conversations with strangers, and told us of his luck with hunches about where to look for historical pieces. His travels have led him to many places where he has found the many fascinating items in his personal collection of historical relics. He brought several items from this treasury that he allowed us to look at and examine. One that was extremely rare and exciting to me was a book signed by Adolf Hitler! Mr. LeRoy is very easy speaker to listen to, he talks as if he were sitting in your living room conducting a casual conversation. To simply listen to him speak is a fascinating history lesson. ~ Carrol Emery, Vice Regent A MESSAGE FROM YOUR REGENT January 2011 Where did 2010 go? In December we had a very successful “Poinsettia Tea” at the Riverside Doubletree. We moved the tea there this year due to the swelling numbers of members in Pioneer, but because of other events occurring at the same time and the typical winter weather, we had a turnout small enough to have been able to actually have it in my home! It was a financial and social success in spite of the smaller than expected turnout and those of us who were there came home with “goodies”, “treasures”, and a sense of ”sisterhood”. Thank you to all who participated and made our Tea such a success! In December I participated in a ceremony at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery for “Wreaths Across America”. New member, Barbara Grant and your National Defense Chairman, Sally Maloney were also there. What a wonderful way to honor our fallen military members. I hope Pioneer Chapter becomes more involved in this wonderful program. November’s program was a greeting from our State Regent, Diane Manweiler. October was a program presented by David Leroy, in spite of being quite ill! September was an excellent program presented by Doug StanWiens, our American History Teacher winner from last year. I hope Doug becomes a regular speaker at our meetings! Two of our members passed away in 2010, Anne Pinner Brown and Bambi McConaughey Thomason. They will be missed, may they rest in peace in the arms of our Lord. Pioneer Chapter continues to be blessed with new members. Our official count is at 130! WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to all of our new members and to all of our prospective new members! It is Master Questionnaire time again, so I hope all of the committee chairs are up to the electronic master questionnaire challenge and have all of your facts and figures ready to be submitted. I look forward to the last 5 months of my term as your Regent. In Loving Service, Your Regent, Rebecca Bowen-Odom Ellen Walworth Eugenia Washington Mary S. Lockwood Mary Desha

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR REGENTJanuary 2011

Where did 2010 go?

I hope P ionee r Chap te r becomes more involved in this wonderful program.

Doug StanWiens, the State Outstanding American History Teacher and runner-up in the National Outstanding American History Teacher competition gave a presentation on the Boise Architecture Project.

In the words of Boise's Mayor Bieter "Through this program, students choose architecture that appeals to them and then learn how to photograph buildings and research their history. The students then organize the material into a searchable online database that creates a valuable record of Boise’s history and makes it widely accessible.

While many projects focus only on the large, impressive homes built by a city’s wealthy forebears, this project presents buildings from many different styles, eras and financial backgrounds – buildings like the Idaho State Penitentiary, sacred buildings like the Ahavath Temple, mansions, small homes and modern office buildings. The students thus learn that important architecture can be new or old, large or small."
