FLOOD INSURANCE INFORMATION

As many people are aware, the City is in the process of revising the FEMA / NFIP Flood maps and City flood ordinance. As part of that process, we hosted a FEMA OPEN HOUSE on July 8, 2014 at the Poquoson High School Forum which saw almost 300 citizens attend. FEMA Region 111 staff was surprised at the large turnout, level of questions being asked and understanding citi-zens already have related to the flood program, insurance rates and the CRS program. Special thanks are offered to all the various departments, staff, you the citizens for attending, Mr. Wheeler, City Manager, Council members and Mayor Hunt for the awesome support provided. Mayor Hunt and Mr. Wheeler were presented a plaque designating the City as being a CLASS 8 CRS Community.

If you missed the open house or are not sure what zone you are currently in, will be in, or are unsure of the information on your flood declaration page you received, or if you are wondering how to reduce your flood premiums or just want to learn more, follow these easy tips:

Elevation Certificate- if you have one that is more than 10 years old, consider having a new one prepared. The new certifi-cate will provide a wealth of valuable information, including but not limited to-

Flood Vents – how many you have and/or need to be compliant Elevation of mechanical equipment Flood Zone you are located in Base Flood Elevation of the structure Finished Floor Elevation of the structure Lowest Adjacent grade and Highest Adjacent Grade

Contact the Community Development Department at 757-868-3035, 757-868-3040 or stop in at 500 City Hall Avenue and staff will be happy to help you. We answer questions; such as, how to read and understand an elevation certificate, if you need to know if you have enough flood vents; what your current elevation is, and help you understand your flood renewal form. We provide assistance in pre-

paring the flood information sheet, and will help you even if you have no idea what CRS means and how it can help you.
