Water Babies Worcester is under new ownership! Claire and Steve who have been running Water Babies in Wiltshire successfully for the last five years are very excited about their expansion into Worcestershire. They took their children to Water Babies back in 2003 and were so impressed they bought the Wiltshire franchise. Things have been going swimmingly since and Claire, Steve and the Water Babies team are really excited about meeting new parents and their little ones in Worcestershire and Leominster!

Water Babies is the UK’s leading baby swimming company, offering fun, innovative classes taught by world class instructors.

Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the multi-award winning Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object following a sudden submersion. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last two years, eight of our children nationally saved themselves from drowning – despite three of them being only two.

Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!

With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you.

And as the weeks go by, you’ll love the thrill of seeing your children progress with the help of our professional instructors. Water Babies lessons run across Worcestershire and in Leominster.

Celebrities open exciting Adventure Centre by Katie Lees pupil at Inkberrow First School

Friday the 13th is supposed to be unlucky, but not for the 6 lucky winners of JCA’s Condover Hall competition! To celebrate the opening of Condover Hall – JCA’s new Shropshire based activity centre – JCA organised a national competition to find 2 Junior Reporters and 4 Junior Managing Directors.

My name is Katie and I was one of the Junior Reporter winners. Read on and I will tell you all about the amazing day I and the other winners experienced.

Condover Hall is just amazing – magical even, especially the Spells Room! The Hall itself is an old house but it has been filled with many modern accessories. The upstairs rooms have all been turned into themed activity rooms, such as the “lazer maze” room, the “Mirror Maze” room and the Path of Stones!

The most exciting part of the day for me though was when I met the celebrities – Dame Kelly Holmes, Lembit Opik and Ben Fogle. George and myself, as the Junior Reporter winners, were each allowed to ask the celebrities three questions. I found out that all the celebrities had different favourite school subjects. Ben Fogle’s was Geography, Lembit Opik’s was Physics and Dame Kelly Holmes’ was PE. I think this must be why she is such a good runner! Ben Fogle told me that his best achievement in life was rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. Lembit Opik had two greatest achievements – learning to fly a plane and helping other people when he was an MP. I bet you can guess that Dame Kelly Holmes’ greatest achievement was winning two Olympic gold medals (not surprising!). There was one thing that all three celebrities were agreed on however, if they were my age their dream school trip would have been to Condover Hall! I hope I have encouraged you to find out more about JCA and Condover Hall. I can guarantee that your kids will love you if you let them visit!

Visit the websites below for more information: www.jca-adventure.co.uk www.condoverhall.com

Katie’s prize was an overnight stay at Condover Hall for the whole class on Mon 27 – Tues 28 June.

Scoobits for Scooters and BikesClare Hartnell is a mum from East Sheen who has just given up her job as an Architect to design and launch a toy product called ‘Scoobits’. She came up with the idea after losing two expensive scooters in the school playground as she couldn’t identify them from all the others.

Children will love Scoobits. They are little toy characters that strap on to the scooter/bike so it stands out from the rest! They are very reasonably priced, flexible, collectable and fun and there are 9 characters to collect. They make great presents too!

Stay sun safe with a UV AngelSlapping on the suncream can be a battle especially when children don’t understand why it’s necessary. Families Leeds has discovered a fun range of sun jewellery from Yorkshire based UV Angel. These great products, made from sun sensitive beads, change colour to let you know that the UV you’re being exposed to could be damaging your skin.

“The idea came after a good friend developed skin cancer,” says Angela Thompson from UV Angel. “When the beads change colour, it makes you think. It reminds you that there’s UV out there and you need to protect yourself.”

There’s a wide range of UV Angel products to choose from including bag tags, key rings, necklaces and bracelets. There’s a fun range for children, as well as a more contemporary range for mums. The darker the beads go, the more UV there is and they act as a great way to prompt not just sun cream application, but also conversation about the dangers of the sun.

“Kids cook quickly so it’s a parent’s responsibility to protect them,” says Angela. “If you have a bead on your bag or your body and you see it change colour, ask do the kids need more cream? Do we need to get out of the sun?”

Families Leeds’ editorial team tested the UV Angel products on a recent holiday. The girls liked the bracelets and keyrings, and were interested in what made the beads change colour so quickly.

“It gave me the opportunity to talk to Isobel and Eliza about sun safety and the threat of skin cancer if you don’t protect yourself,” says Families Leeds Editor Sarah Butters. “What surprised us was the UV around even on a cloudy day.”

Take a look at the full range of UV Angel products at www.uv-angel.com. Prices start at £2.50.

The Little Letter CompanyChildren love to receive their own letters in the post. They also enjoy cutting, colouring, sticking and gluing. The Little Letter Company has combined these two concepts to produce “Little Letters” – crafts packs that are posted to 3-5 year olds each week. For less than the price of a comic, children receive a pack containing everything they need to make a complete craft activity, plus having the excitement of receiving a brightly coloured envelope in the post addressed to them! Where possible, the packs also include ideas of how the theme of the craft can be extended into further activities during the week.

The service provide a cost effective alternative to the overflowing craft box that lurks in many of our homes yet never quite seems to have the things you need, though arguably, the real value lies in the fact that you don’t have to rack your brain for an idea of what to make. Subscriptions start at as little as £1.75 per week, and trial packages are available. Gift subscriptions can also be purchased, which make for a unique gift that lasts well beyond the child’s actual birthday.

News & ViewsSmall StepsSmall Steps is a new company which combines the expertise of Mother and daughter team Rebecca Staples and Jeanette Martin.

Rebecca: I have taught for many years in inner city London schools, specialising in Social

Emotional and Behavioural Problems. This area of work continues to be my passion some 15 years later. My biggest learning curve came when I had children of my own (4 and 1 yrs old) and I found out just what hard work it was, but with a consistent approach and firm boundaries, my son is normally a delight to take out! I have also worked with both parents and teachers delivering training and advising on matters from sibling rivalry, refusing to eat at mealtimes and much much more.

Jeanette: I trained as a paediatric nurse and have been running my own nursery for over 35 years. I was awarded ‘very good’ by Ofsted and parents often ask me for help and advice for their little ones, anything and everything from supermarket tantrums to specific problems with ASD. I have also worked with CAMHS (children and family mental health) supporting and advising parents. I have a diploma in ASD and have worked with many children on the spectrum, focusing on positive outcomes for both parent and child.

We meet many parents who seem unsure or unaware of how best to deal with certain situations and often feel like they are losing control. This leads to frustration and anxiety for both the child and the parent. We aim to empower parents and give them the confidence to make the right choices for their family in everyday situations thus making home a more relaxed place to be.

“I used to dread taking my son to the supermarket. Jeanette worked with me and my son and within a month the problem was gone! I couldn’t believe the sense of freedom and satisfaction it gave me.” Tracy,Talgarth

Stop the back to school nerves – top tips to prepare mums for the big day!Oxford University Press has found that more than 3 in 4 mums (78%) of pre-school children are ‘anxious’ about their child starting school and nearly 9 in 10 (88%) mums questioned said their child’s emotional happiness – confidence, ability to make friends easily and enjoyment of school – is their greatest concern.

Ruth Coppard, leading child and educational psychologist, comments: “What’s clear from the findings is that mums equate their child’s confidence to an ability to settle in. You can’t teach your child confidence, but there are many simple steps parents can take to build familiarity in order to prepare their children for school life.”

To help mums feel more excited about this next milestone, the publisher has got together with Ruth Coppard, to create early stage literacy activities to try out over the summer months, to help calm their own nerves, improve confidence and prepare for their little one’s next big step in September.

1. Left to right Encourage any writing to go from left to right and when you

read together use your finger to trace under the words from left to right.

2. Rock-a-bye Re-visit popular nursery rhymes. Rhyming skills are thought

to underpin reading, so encouraging your child to remember the ‘missing’ word from the end of a line, will help to develop this.

3. Finger fun! If your child wants to write letters, make sure the letters

are formed correctly – left to right, top to bottom. Writing with a finger in sand or on the carpet – something with texture – is a good way to help your child to learn the shapes.

4. Number knowledge Encourage counting while baking together. For example 3

eggs, 4 spoons of sugar etc, counting out items when laying the table, seeing how many strawberries can fit in a bowl, sharing raisins. The important thing is counting 1 to 10. Count steps and railings, numbers on houses, red cars, even grannies on the bus!

5. Story time Get into a daily habit of reading to your

child. Sit together and enjoy a book. Praise the telling of the story, not the detailed accuracy. The emphasis is on enjoying books and being comfortable with them. Available to mums on the high street, the Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper series will introduce children to characters that they will go on to experience in school. Knowing these characters will help to provide a feeling of security for the child as they enter the school room and encourage more confidence in reading with their new teacher.

The survey and tips were commissioned to re-launch Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper, a series available on the high-street that features characters children will encounter when learning to read at school.

EducationMusic course stimulates compositionPupils at Kidderminster’s Holy Trinity International School (HTIS) took part in this year’s Edexcel Exam Board’s daylong music course as part of the Gifted and Talented Programme for music students at HTIS.

In excess of 400 students were involved from across the country, with the day proving both challenging as well as rewarding for all concerned. HTIS Deputy Head, Mrs Vikki Vincent, commenting said: “The course covered how to deal with the many different types of exam questions, as well as involving the students in marking example compositions to help them to review and improve their own work when back in school. This type of educational activity is a valuable addition to the whole learning process.”

Senior students, as part of the school’s music lessons, have the opportunity of working with a specialist music software programme which enables them to write and then listen back and critique their composition.

Said Mrs Vincent: “They use the programme as part of their overall music tuition, even having the ability to write symphonies if they so wish. Already we have two completed compositions ready for submission to the GCSE board, which is a wonderful achievement as they prepare to undertake their GCSE Music exam this month, a full two-years early.”

Taking part as members of the school’s choir, they have competed recently in two competitions, Music for Youth with the final result as yet unknown, and the Dudley Music Festival, attaining a second in class.

Mrs Vincent added further: “They all have gained much and enjoyed a really positive day both on a musical and personal level.”

Keep up the good work over the summer!Explore Learning is a network of learning centres providing maths and English tuition to children aged 5-14, designed to improve knowledge, confidence and enjoyment of learning. Explore helps children make fantastic academic progress, and the vibrant atmosphere keeps them engaged

and focused, enabling them to have fun while they learn.

The summer period is an ideal time to start Explore membership as research has shown that two-thirds of children fall behind over the summer holidays. Coming to Explore just once or twice a week will help children retain all the skills they have been working to master in school and prepare them for the new term ahead. Each Explore member has an individualised learning programme tailored to meet their needs, and typically makes a gain of one academic year in just six months of membership. All of our programmes are mapped to the National Curriculum and the individual focus allows children to work at their own pace - whether they are finding school tricky or top of the class.

If you are interested in finding out more about the tuition offered by Explore Learning and our exciting programme of free Summer Workshops, please contact the Redditch centre on 01527 910222 to book your free trial session.

Storytime – ESO performing for young children

Storytime has been developed from a project by the London Mozart Players and is aimed at children from two to six years old and also for children with special needs.

The ESO ensemble is led by a conductor/narrator, and consists of a cello, French horn and clarinet.

Storytime is a combination of songs and stories with audience participation; the instruments accompanying well-known nursery tales such as Billy Goat Gruff and the Bear Hunt. The players introduce their instruments to the children and show volunteers from the audience how the strings and mouth-pieces work. The show ends with a concert in which the children join the orchestra for their first ever performance under the baton of our Conductor Bear!

Unlock your child’s learning potentialIs your child in need of a confidence boost or an extra challenge? Could they do with consolidating what they already know?

As we look to the start of a new school year, it’s time to think about how you can support your child’s learning. At the local Evesham, Worcester East, Kidderminster and Hereford study centres, leading supplementary education provider Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes tailored to all ages and abilities.

At the start of a new term especially, it’s important that your child gets to grips with core subjects and with the learning skills vital for academic progression. We all know the importance of maths and English, and Kumon’s unique method of learning focuses on your child’s individual needs, ensuring they progress at their own pace.

Once enrolled on a Kumon programme, your child will visit the centre every week and will have daily worksheets to keep up with their studies at home. With guidance and support from their Instructor, children acquire not only a strong grounding in maths and English but fundamental tools like self-motivation and independence in study, helping to achieve their potential at school and beyond.

Over 60,000 children study with Kumon at more than 600 centres in the UK, and these numbers are growing all the time.

Moffats School’s Alex Daborn has been involved in preparing children for ESB exams for many years. She writes, “Yes – it’s that time of year when the children become the teachers, and the teachers learn to listen….always so good for us! We watched impassioned Chekhov, and heard eerily well-read stories of horror. We had the company of a gloriously beautiful, golden Haflinger for two days – and fell in love with him! We heard of visits to traditional glass-makers in Venice, to the Doc Marten’s factory, to Inuit reservations in Canada and to the Carousel of the Italian Carabinieri in Rome. We were shown the precious doll’s house made by grandfather, a handsome Mamod steam engine – and Ernest the guinea-pig made an appearance! We now know how to feed chickens, make saddles, and appreciate rap music.

This is the world where the child becomes the expert and the child learns to speak with authority. This is the world of ESB!”

Mum’s the Word!Carol Dando is married to David, lives in Kington, Worcester and is mum to Ollie aged 6 and Briony aged 4.We’ve lived in Kington for nearly 10 years now and how life has changed in that time! When we first moved in, it was just myself, David and our new puppy Sam. Fast forward ten years and we now have Ollie who is nearly 7, Briony who has just turned 4 and a slightly more ancient, but none the less mischievous, dog.

When Ollie was born, I had a very demanding career managing a Department Store, but luckily, I found a fantastic nursery called Little Bo Peep in Inkberrow and was able to combine motherhood and work. I really enjoyed the balance that I had and, on the days when I was at home, we were able to have fun together experiencing a range of activities. These included Rhythm Time which Ollie loved and continued with until pre-school took over this regular slot and Tumble Tots which really helped him with his balance and co-ordination whilst also being lots of fun.

When Briony was born 3 years later our circumstances had changed. My husband was now running his own business and we decided that there was an opportunity for me to become a full time mum. This role presented a whole new set of challenges and, although I didn’t necessarily miss the job, I did miss the great people that I had been working with and I knew that it would be important for all of us to get out and about as much as possible, meeting new friends and sharing new experiences.

Briony started to attend most of the classes that I enjoyed with Ollie and together we also found new places to visit. The list of our favourite places is a long one but many a day has been spent running around Worcester Woods or sledging there in the winter and then drinking hot chocolate in the Orchard café (lovely food and really child friendly). Another favourite is Stratford Armouries with its great indoor soft play area and also its lovely garden – the food is good too! Bungo’s Barn in Bidford and Imagination Street in Bromsgrove are two other soft play venues that have become regular haunts for us. As the children have become older, they have started to join new clubs. Ollie is particularly keen on tennis and is a regular at Pershore Tennis Club – they do everything from group lessons, tennis camps during the holidays and one to one lessons. They both love the water and have been having swimming lessons at Broom Swimming School for some time now. It’s a great pool – the water is always very warm and it’s a very well established swim school – the staff there are all lovely too!

When Ollie is at school and Briony is at pre–school (she attends Little Bo Peep in

Inkberrow and also Flyford Pippins Pre-school in Bishampton), I do still try to fit in a bit of ‘me time’ if possible, as I believe that we all benefit from this! It can be as simple as taking Sam for a walk in Grafton woods or perhaps having a facial when time allows – Fredrix on the London Road is a favourite of mine. I also believe that it is important to try and stay as fit and healthy as possible, especially having two young children to chase around after, so I do try to attend weekly aerobics sessions as well as a fitness camp once a week with AML Fitness in Inkberrow and Dormston. I always feel so much better even if I don’t really feel up for it at the time and, as well as the obvious benefits, it’s also great fun.

The next few months will herald yet more changes as Briony will be starting Flyford First School in September. We are really going to make the most of the long summer that lies ahead of us (hopefully). We are planning on visiting lots of our favourite places together as a family and above all will try to make sure that we have lots of fun!

What is Puddle Ducks?Puddle Ducks swimming classes for babies and toddlers promote fun and enjoyment in the water! In our baby swimming classes babies enjoy freedom of movement, relaxation and bonding. In our toddler swimming classes children gain confidence and water safety skills. From water babies through to confident swimmers, our children learn to swim with grace and efficiency.

Many of our Puddle Ducks are able to swim at least 10m unaided by the time they start school...and all of them love swimming for life!

How did you get started? I was working as a solicitor in Birmingham when I had my son in August 2009. I returned to work in January 2010 and found the demands of the job and work culture did not sit well with family life. I was constantly running for trains to spend that precious last hour with Oscar before bed time. I loved taking Oscar swimming and when I discovered Puddle Ducks and went to watch the classes in action, I knew this was the right move for me. The classes were structured, so much fun, and incorporated safety techniques that weren’t being taught in the classes I attended with Oscar. I couldn’t wait to be able to bring them to Worcestershire.

What does the future hold for the business? The classes are going from strength to strength and I will be adding a new pool to my ‘stable’ in September with Sunday afternoon sessions as the demand for the classes, particularly at the weekends, is growing.

What is the best bit about what you do?Spending time playing in the water with babies and toddlers! It is far the most rewarding job I have had; to see a toddler, who was nervous and clingy on the first lesson grow in confidence and take their first independent swim, gives me such a sense of achievement. Equally, working flexibly and spending time with my family.

Any bad bits?Smelling of chlorine after hours in the pool! However, a good chlorine neutralising shampoo certainly helps.

How do you fit work around your personal life?I work as hard now, if not harder than I did as a solicitor, but I am able to work at times that suit me. I generally work quite late in the evenings and don’t watch much TV any more. However, I get to spend loads more day time with my family, which is invaluable.

What advice would you give other people looking to work for themselves?Do it! It’s not easy, everything takes longer than you anticipate and you are the finance department, the marketing department and every other department you need for your business to operate. I have found being part of a franchise network fantastic as I get the benefit of the experience of those who have been operating longer than me and the support from Duck HQ is fantastic.
