Hipperholme Grammar School has a lovely nursery on the site of the Junior School on Wakefield Road, Hipperholme. With just a few places left for September 2014, the School encourages anyone looking at nursery provision to phone to arrange a viewing as soon as possible.

During the half term up to the summer, the nursery children have been learning about the seaside, listening to sounds of the sea, hand painting to make pictures of fish and learning new songs about the seaside. A highlight was making ice-cream and enjoying eating it in the sunshine!

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, Huddersfield, was officially opened in June 2013 so has just celebrated its first birthday. It has already supported many local families and Forget Me Not told Families Pennines about one particular little boy and his mum – Ajay and Kim.

ajay was born in 2002, a healthy baby, but at 3 months he choked for no reason every half an hour, and he was rushed to leeds General infirmary. tests were negative however the Consultants didn’t expect ajay to live beyond a year. But he did, then aged 8 ajay stopped breathing, and Kim had to resuscitate him. this was a very poorly little boy.

When forget me not Children’s Hospice started ajay received hospice at home care, with carers one night a week to give ajay his tea and some play time. With new parent rooms open at the hospice, Kim has been planning some overnight stays with ajay throughout the summer holidays.

Kim says, “the advice i would give to other parents in my situation would be that they need stay positive, to open up, not be afraid and let people help them.”

To support families like Ajay’s, visit www.forgetmenotchild.co.uk/nurseappeal or call 01484 411040 today.

multiplication strategiesa child who learns to manipulate complicated multiplications into a familiar form has a great skill to carry throughout life. Steve uttley of numberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, explains an easy way to solve difficult multiplication sums.

Though children are capable of remembering their times tables, beyond ‘12s’ they may have difficulty. There is a way to massage complex multiplications to match common times tables and still arrive at the same answer using proportional adjustment strategy - doubling and halving or trebling and thirding – or vice versa. Look at the example below:

finding the right school is one of the most important decisions that you will make in your child’s life, and the choice of independent education involves a significant financial commitment.

A Hipperholme Grammar School parent has told Families Pennines about her son’s time at the school so far, “I’ve taken for granted that my son would receive the necessary support and encouragement to meet his academic potential. However what has really blown me away is the level of caring, nurturing and genuine regard all the staff have for his pastoral needs. He evolved from a quiet, shy pupil into the confident and intelligent head boy of the Junior School and is now an aspiring and highly successful pupil at the Senior School.”

Sue Oliver, who manages admission for the school says, “Our pupils are confident, well-rounded individuals who stand out from the crowd. Whatever the age of your child, do come and talk to us.”

Summer may be just around the corner but now is the time to be gathering information on junior and senior schools and noting down the dates of open events, many of which are held in the autumn term.

Oldham Hulme Grammar School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 3-18 and stands in its own leafy grounds just minutes from Oldham centre and major commuting routes. It has open events at the beginning of October.

The school has a long tradition of excellence, where students are supported in small classes by well-qualified and dedicated teachers which has resulted in excellent examination results at both A level and GCSE. Socially and ethnically diverse, with strong pastoral care, the nursery and the sixth form are fully co-educational, whilst in the prep schools and in years 7 to 11 the pupils are educated in single sex classes yet are able to mix socially outside the classroom.

Hulme has high academic standards but prides itself on being able to nurture and encourage children to fulfil their true potential and past pupils include Professor Brian Cox (physicist), John Stapleton (TV presenter), Nedum Onuoha (premiership footballer) and Nicola White (England and Great Britain Olympic hockey player).

1. It is very important that children learn how to manage leisure time but also get an opportunity to unwind – make sure there really is some ‘down-time’ and every moment isn’t filled with planned activity!

2. Fine motor skills can suffer over the break so practice using pens and pencils, scissors, sewing - anything that needs careful control. A little, often, is far better than a lot, rarely.

3. Keep reading! Anything from fiction to the back of cereal boxes....and get the whole family to talk about favourite stories and authors....again, the message is ‘a little, often’.

4. Diary writing is great – e-diary, photographs with short notes, and sketches or a scrapbook – a record of holiday activities will be invaluable for the inevitable September homework, “Write about what you did over the summer”!

5. Numbers need constant practice and mathematical vocabulary can be forgotten very easily. Invest in a simple Mathematical Dictionary to brush up on technical terms. Talk about mathematical concepts and practice computation in shops or when preparing food.

6. Handling and managing money is a practical way of rehearsing mathematics – and children often take their own finances very seriously – suddenly, those times tables actually matter!

7. Keep children talking about issues and encourage critical thinking – there are excellent news resources for children which help with building logical arguments, as well as providing a broad base of general knowledge.

Keeping children up to speed over the summer holidayThe long School summer holidays are upon us – eagerly anticipated by children, but such a long time without formal lessons can concern parents and carers. Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield School, gave Families Pennines a few ideas for keeping children ‘up to speed’ over the long break.

wayne sleep entertains babyballet’s franchisees

National treasure Wayne Sleep OBE showed off his dancing skills in Calderdale this summer. The Royal Ballet star was guest speaker at song and dance

academy, babyballet’s, annual conference in Halifax.

Academy owner 40-year-old Claire O’Connor met Wayne when she took part in the Channel 4 documentary, Big Ballet, about a troupe of plus-size amateur ballerinas – all size 12 to 26 (ballet dancers are typically size 6-8). It was fronted by Wayne, famous for being the shortest male dancer ever accepted into the Royal Ballet, at 5ft 2in.

Claire was so inspired by Wayne, she wanted her 60 franchisees to meet him. “It was the most brilliant day imaginable. He spoke from the heart and inspired everyone, and dancing with him in a workshop was something else. He was very complimentary about us and said he could see the passion, love and hard work our franchisees put into the business.”

Babyballet has an exciting 12 months ahead. It celebrates its 10th anniversary next year and one of the highlights is a charity ball in August when Claire plans to bring more celebrities to Calderdale.

Tour de France

Visitors to Rishworth have been admiring a giant yellow bicycle outside Rishworth School which has been revealed as a huge welcome to le Tour de France.

Pupils at Rishworth School and its Junior School, Heathfield, have been preparing with activities from mapping the route of Le Tour to creating food products to be sold en route. At Heathfield, children have taken a Bikeability course and all the children will create a ‘human’ picture with a Le Tour theme on their Sports Day.

Mr Anthony Wilkins, the Head of Heathfield, says, “It is important for our School, with such a strong sporting tradition, to support this unique local event. Children will remember being a part of the excitement surrounding Le Tour for all their lives, and being a part of the event will help them to challenge themselves in the future.”

Heathfield, the Junior School to Rishworth, 01422 823 564, [email protected], www.rishworth-school.co.uk.

le Tour Comes to rishworth School

The Star Tree Studio puts le Tour on the map for littleboroughlittleborough’s shop-front creative play provider, the Star tree Studio, is celebrating le tour de france with a design a jersey competition till 5 July (see website). the studio has also been working with littleborough Community Primary School decorating a bike to put on display in the run up to the big event.

Neela Jackson, owner of The Star Tree Studio, says, “There will lots of spectators coming to watch at Blackstone Edge near Littleborough and is going to be a big thing for the town, so I wanted to get people excited about the Tour de France early.”

The Star Tree Studio has a fabulous educational and creative play toy shop and provides classes and parties too. www.thestartreestudio.com.

Where to watch le grand departFinally, it is here. The world’s biggest sporting event comes to Yorkshire on 5 and 6 July. Stage 2 sees a journey through our area, from York to Sheffield, with the cavalcade (sponsors who hand out goodies) starting a good few hours ahead of the race leaders, followed by the peloton (the mass of riders behind the leaders) then finishing with the support vehicles. And don’t forget the road closures ahead of the race and afterwards too – and these may include access roads not just those on the route itself.

So if you are planning to watch the big event up close and personal, you will need to make plans to get yourself onto the route very early in the day and expect to be there for many hours.

Some families might need to think about stopping with a friend ‘en route’ or try to book at a campsite overlooking the action. For others a local ‘spectator hub’ might be the answer with Haworth, Hebden Bridge, Huddersfield and Holmfirth handy for our region. With big screens, refreshments, toilet facilities, entertainment and activities they are likely to prove popular with both residents and visitors alike. Be aware that hubs will have limited or no access by car and will encourage travel on foot or cycle, bus or train.

If you won’t get to see Le Tour yourself there is lots going on to celebrate, so why not check out what else is happening in and around our area to celebrate Le Tour de France in our What’s On section in this issue and keep an eye on Families Online at www.familiespennines.co.uk.

Check out letour.yorkshire.com/stage-2/map/allhubs for more information.

Street CirCuit CyCle raCe in HudderSfield If you don’t feel that the family will be up to an all day open air event, then how about the Huddersfield One Community Criterium cycle race on the eve of Le Tour and organised jointly by Dave Sowerby of Sowerby Brothers Cycles, Mirfield and the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Martyn Bolt.

Held in the town centre, with all roads being closed, people will be able to move freely around the circuit. Three races are planned including a Support Race featuring highly talented amateur riders, a Youth Race showcasing the future talent of the country and the Elite Race bringing leading professionals and top amateurs to get the historic weekend into gear.

Dave Sowerby says, “The circuit will challenge riders’ skills, as they stream past at breathtaking speeds, attempting to improve their position. Spectators will be at the very heart of the race and the atmosphere will be electric!”

Summer holidays involve time in or around water so here are top safety tips from Swimbabes.

BeFore You Go

• Pack holiday essentials – sunglasses, hats, UV sun suits and tents, high SPF sun cream, swim nappies, wetsuits, goggles and snorkels.

• Get your children water ready - encourage splashing in the bath, join a local parent & swim class.

• Brush up on your first aid skills – a few basics could help save a life.

WHen You Arrive

• Log local emergency numbers on your mobile.

• Check which pools and beaches are supervised by lifeguards, and understand flags or signs shown near water.

DurinG Your STAY

• Use plenty of SPF 25 or above sun cream, reapplying frequently especially when children get out of the water.

• Take loads of cold drinks – busy children get easily dehydrated, causing headaches & nausea.

• Always supervise children near water! Is your child’s water confidence suited to the pool depth or sea conditions?

• Flotation aids are not drown-proof - help your child use aids correctly and appropriate for their age & ability. Take care not to drift when floating in the sea.

The most important thing is to stay vigilant to make sure everyone remains safe, happy & has lots of fun.

Swimbabes isn’t just a leading provider of baby swimming classes – it offers a comprehensive online shop too: www.swimbabes.co.uk

With a roller rink, an Enchanted Forest filled with interactive playgrounds, a huge maze, giant inflatable slide, an electric scooter trail, magical gift emporium, ice cream parlour, indoor play zone, craft and wet weather area there is something for everyone!
