Stallion
Pride!
At South, our code of conduct helps our
students as they interact with each other
and with staff. This year we have added
some stallion award incentives to
encourage students to make wise choices in
common areas such as the cafeteria, bus
room, hallways, rest room, and morning
line up. Each week the results of the total
number of stallion awards per class are
tallied, and the winners have the privilege
of hanging the banner outside their
classroom. We also have a “golden
plunger” award for the class that earns the
most rest room stallion awards.

Walking School Bus
Ever heard of a “walking” school bus? It’s a safe way for walking students to get to school. By meeting each
other along the way and remaining in a group, students can increase their safety to and from school. To
encourage walking safety, we are going to designate Thursday, October 6 for our walking school bus event.
Partnering with the Fairfield County safe Communities/Safe Kids Coalition and the Fairfield County District
Library, we are establishing 2 distinct routes. Parents are welcome to join the children as they walk to school,
and on October 6 there will be readers from the public library who will entertain the students at specific stops
along the way.
Route 1:
At 8:00, “bus” 1 moves from the western corner of E. Fair Ave. and Broad St. south towards Chestnut St. “picking up”
students along the way. The group will stop outside the public library and the gazebo for poetry readings by volunteers.
Route 2:
At 8:30, “bus” 2 moves north from the corner of Wheat St. and Locust St. to Walnut and west to South Elementary “picking
up” students along the way. The group will stop outside Bay Food Market and at Sycamore St. for poetry readings by volunteers.
We’d love to have as many students as possible from these neighborhood areas join the walking school bus! Your students are
bringing home a bright yellow sheet of paper about the routes. Mrs. Cathers plans to join route 1 on their trek to school.
Spotlight On Our New Teachers
Miss Watson, Intervention Specialist and Mrs. Smith, 4th
grade teacher are new to South
Elementary this year. We are glad they have joined our staff!
