o 2Samuel15:1‐17Inpreviousreading,wesawthatAbsalom,thesonofKingDavid,killedhisbrother,Amnon.Indoingso,Absalommadeenemiesandhadtofleeforhislife.Inthispassage,weagainseehimmakingenemies,butthistimehedoesnotintendtoflee.DavidandthoseloyaltohimarenowAbsalom’senemies,andDavidfindshimselffleeingfromdanger.ThishasoccurredinhislifeseveraltimessincehewasanointedastheLord’schosenking.
o Psalm3ThispsalmistiedtotheexperienceofDavid’sfleeingfromAbsalom.WeseeDavid’skeenawarenessthathisenemiesaremany(v.1).Notonlyisthiscurrentthreatcomingfromhisson,butalso“theheartsofthemenofIsrael”arejoinedwithhim.InadditiontoDavidhavingenemiesinthisrebellion,hisenemiescontendthattheverypowerofGodisinsufficienttosavehim(v.2).Yet,inthispsalm,DavidcontinuestoplacehisconfidenceintheLORDforprotectionandpeaceasDavidsleepsinthemidstofdanger.DavidasksthattheLORDsavehim,andhestandsonthetruththatsalvationcomesonlyfromHim.
TheBottomLine:SalvationbelongstotheLORD.

SUGGESTIONS
These suggestionswere created by the age‐groupministry leaders as away to help parents better communicate thebiblical truths discussed in the Family Worship Guide. These activities and questions can replace or serve as asupplementtothequestionsunderthe“Read”sectiononPage1.RememberthatthesesuggestionsareintendedtohelpparentsfacilitateGod‐centereddiscussionswiththeirchildren.Parentsshouldprayerfullyusethesesuggestions,andanyothermeansnecessary,tohelptheirchildrendiscoverthetruthsofGod’swordandworshipHimtogether.
Preschool(Birth‐Kindergarten)o Beforeyoubeginyouwillneedsomethingthatyoucanuseasacrown.Youcanmakeone,useabowl,orgetone
fromyourlocalfastfoodrestaurant.o Chooseoneofyourchildrentobeking.Placethecrownontheirhead.Explainthataking’sjobistotakecareofhis
peopleandmakeimportantdecisions.GodchoseDavidtobekingofIsrael.GodwantedDavidtoobeyHiminthewayheledhispeople.Otherpeoplewerejealousandwantedtobeking,butGodhadchosenDavid.ThismadeDavid’sjobaskingveryhard.Hehadmanyenemiesthatwantedtohurthim.However,DavidstillchosetofollowGodandbelievedthatGod’splanforhimtobekingwasbest.DavidaskedGodtosavehimfromhisenemiesandknewifhewaitedonGod’splan,thingswouldbeokay.God’splanisperfect.
o Godlovesusandhasplansforustoo.HesentHissonJesustobetheSavior–tosaveHispeople.IfwechoosetobelieveinJesus,confessandturnawayfromoursin(badchoices),Hewillsaveus,too.Godlovesusthatmuch.Heistheonlyonewhocansaveus.
Children(Grades1‐5)
o Activity:TrustFallFindasturdyobjectofaboutwaist‐heightandinviteyourchildtostandonit;kitchenchairstypicallyworkwell.Positionatleasttwo“catchers”infrontofthechairwiththeirarmsextendedstraightoutward,forearmsup.Haveyourchildcrosstheirarmsacrosstheirchest,closetheireyes,andfallbackward,keepingtheirlegsandbodystraight.Iftheystepback(showingtheydidn'ttrustyoutocatchthem),theymustdoitagain.
o Askyourchildhowtheyfeltstandingintheair,eyesclosed,justbeforefallingbackward(afraid,nervous,unsureofwhatwillhappen).Theninvitethemtoconsiderwhathappened(youcaughtthem,theyweresafetheentiretime,youdidnotletthemfalltotheground).Askyourchildtothinkofsomethingthatmakesthemafraid.Helpthemthinkthroughwhatcausesthisfeelingoffearinside,andwhatspecificthoughtsandexperiencestheyhaveinthemiddleofascarysituation.
o Connect:KingDavid’sStoryDavidfacedasituationfarmorefrighteningthanmostpeoplewilleverknow.Hisownsonhadbetrayedhim.Worse,amassive,deadly,andhighlytrainedarmywantedtokillDavidandwaschasinghimfromplacetoplace.ManyofDavid’sownpeople,theIsraelites,nolongerwantedDavidtobetheirking.Manyevenwantedhimdead!InPsalm3wegettoseehowDavidcriedouttotheLordwhenhewasdeeplyafraid.EventhoughDavidwassurroundedby“thousandsofpeoplewhohavesetthemselvesagainst[him]allaround”(v.6),hewasabletotrustinGod.Davidknewthat“salvationbelongstotheLORD”(v.8)!
o Whetherweareinphysicaldangerfromanenemy,orinspiritualdangerbecauseofoursin,GodisalwayseagertohearcriesforhelpfromHischildren.Godismighty,andHeisnevertooweaktosave.Thinkbacktofeelingafraidduringthe“trustfall”.YouwereabletohavetheconfidencetofallbackbecauseyouknewthatMom/Dadlovedyou.HowmuchmorecanwehaveconfidenceinourgreatGodwhenweareafraid!WhenwerealizethatwearesinfulandmusthaveaSavior–callonHim.Whenwefacesituationsinlifethatmakeusfearful–callonHim.ForsalvationbelongstotheLORD!
