In 1847, she published her novel “Wuthering Heights” under the name Ellis Bell. It received mixed reviews but subsequently became an English literary classic. She became sick during her brother’s funeral in September 1848. Though her condition worsened steadily, she rejected all medical help. She died of tuberculosis in December 1848.

17 Jan 1820 – 28 May 1849 An English novelist and poet; another of three famous sisters. She left home to work as a governess for five years at Thorp Green. For three years after that, she worked as a teacher at a school near there, then returned home in June 1846.

On May 24, 1849, she and one of her sisters travelled to Scarborough for the fresh sea air but she died four days later at Scarborough.

21 April 1816 – 31 March 1855 An English novelist and poet; the eldest of three famous sisters. She left home in 1831 to continue her education, later teaching at the same school for three years. After which, she held various positions as governess and teacher, returning home in 1844. She married at 38 and died nine months later with her unborn child.

The Bronte Sisters Emily, Anne and Charlotte

The Bronte Sisters After the death of their mother from what is believed to have been cancer, four of five Bronte sisters went to boarding school. Anne, the youngest, did not go. In 1825, a typhus epidemic at the school caused them to return home.

Maria, who may actually have had tuberculosis, was sent home first, where she died. Elizabeth died also, a month later, soon after she returned home.

Branwell Bronte (1817-1848) Branwell, the only boy in the family, was regarded by the family as being the most talented.

By 18, he had been published a few times in periodicals. He worked as a portrait painter in 1838/39 and produced the famous painting of his three author sisters. After which, he held various jobs and lost them, attributed to drinking and moral failure.

His addictions probably masked the onset of tuberculosis. After he collapsed outside the family home, a local doctor diagnosed that he was in the disease’s terminal stages.

Branwell died in September 1848.

Born 18 July 1918. A militant anti-apartheid activist. Co-founder and leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962, he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and was sentenced to life in prison. He was imprisoned for 27 years.

A scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator.

In 1873, he was diagnosed with consumption (TB), the same disease that claimed his mother when he was 15. He moved to the American southwest in hopes that the climate would prolong his life.

He developed a chronic lung illness in late 1830; cause of death: heart failure and tuberculosis.

President Andrew Jackson (1767 – 1845) Served as President of the USA from 1829 - 1837

His cause of death has been listed as chronic tuberculosis, dropsy and heart failure. Some controversy exists, blaming

symptoms on a chest wound suffered during a duel.

Jackson’s wife died before his inauguration. At the President’s request, her niece, Emily Donelson, lived at the White House with her family (gave birth to three of her four

children there) and served as his hostess until her death from Tuberculosis.

She displayed musical talent and was given preferential support for education over her later-famous brother.

She was also a talented singer.

The Influences on Charles Dickens Righteous anger stemming from his own experience and the living conditions of working-class people of his time became major themes in the work of Charles Dickens.

Perhaps no novelist of the 19th century had more characters die from tuberculosis than Charles Dickens. One of the most memorable was Smike in “The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby.”

Other Family of Charles Dickens Augustus Dickens (1827-1866) youngest brother of Charles Dickens

Augustus left his first wife in England and moved to the U.S.A. in 1855. He died from tuberculosis at age 39. His brother

Charles supported both of his wives financially.

Kate Dickens Perugini (1839-1929) daughter of Charles Dickens (one of ten children)

Kate established herself as a painter and her work was accepted by the Royal Academy. As a child, Kate developed a worrying

illness. According to her biographer, it began with a sore throat but developed into pronounced swelling on her neck. It is now believed that she was suffering from scrofula (tuberculosis of the neck). Although she lived to age 89, Kate often suffered

bouts of poor health as an adult.

5 November 1913 – 8 July 1967 An English actress born in British India. She won two Best Actress Academy Awards. She was a prolific stage performer, frequently in collaboration with her famous Actor/Director husband.

For much of her adult life, she suffered from bipolar disorder. She also suffered recurrent bouts of chronic tuberculosis, first diagnosed in the mid-1940s.

In May 1967, while rehearsing for a play, she became ill but seemed to recover after several weeks of rest. On 7 July 1967, she collapsed on her bedroom floor and succumbed to the disease.

She won the Best Actress Academy Award for her portrayal of Blanch DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), as well as for her portrayal of the southern belle Scarlett O’Hara, alongside Clark Gable, in the epic American Civil War drama Gone with the Wind.
