Dear members of the St Thomas More Community

As some of you have heard me say before I firmly believe

that God never calls us away from something mdash only ever

toward something These past two years at St Thomas More

made my discernment of religious life with the Dominicans

that much easier precisely because of how great a parish this

is and how amazing all of you are I was able to determine

through prayer and through my priestly ministry that even

though I am serving God at a parish that I love and among

people whom I love God is indeed calling me to something

else mdash something ldquomorerdquo so to speak The Lord is calling

me toward Dominican life not away from St Thomas More

or the Diocese of Gary

I will very much hold dear this parish community and the

diocese that I will forever call my home I thank you for the

prayers and support that yoursquove given me as well as for the

prayers that many of you have assured me you will continue

to send my way All of you from Fr Mike to our faithful

daily Mass-goers have taught me by example how to be

generous thank you so much for the farewell cards and gifts

I ask God to preserve in my heart the lessons that you have

taught me and I ask for your forgiveness for any time I

failed to truly be Christ to any of you because of my own

human weakness

Know of my prayers for you as I enter the novitiate May all

of us grow as effective preachers of the Gospel and bring our

world closer to Christ

Dear Family Members and Friends of St Thomas More Parish St Thomas More once said ldquoWhat part soever you take upon you

play that as well as you can and make the best of itrdquo To be perfectly honest Irsquom not sure in what context these words were spoken but I take it to mean that whatever vocation you take up we are to do our jobs well and enjoy it This year I celebrate 25 years of my ordination to the priesthood I love being a priest I have wanted to be a priest since I was five years old But I didnrsquot answer the call till I was 30 years old Throughout my years of serving God and Godrsquos people it has brought me great joy But because I am a human being I can tell you that I have had some difficulties too We all do Since last October I was placed on a medical leave of absence My health is better now but I am still healing My new assignment here at St Thomas More as a priest-in-residence will mark my return to active priesthood and I am so looking forward to being with you all I am even more pleased to be working with my good friend Fr Mike Yadron About 20 years ago I was his associate pastor at Queen of All Saints in Michigan City Fr Mike and I have been good friends before I even became a priest He has been one of my greatest supporters and advocates throughout the years I am keenly aware of the history of St Thomas and it has been an awesome assignment for many priests and the spiritual home for the faithful throughout the decades of its existence I have been deeply impressed with all those who have been part of the festival which I had the opportunity to attend this year This speaks highly of the spirit that is imbued in this huge congregation I also had the opportunity to spend the Easter Triduum this year at St Tomrsquos Again I was deeply impressed by the attendance the music the servers the lectors the deacons and the participation of the community In short I am happy to be here and I look forward to meeting as many new people as I am able to It seems that I already know many of you and that is great May God bless us all as we journey through this life to come together in the life we have been promised as believers in Jesus Christ With the peace of Christ

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Todays Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story Most of the

healing miracles are standalone encounters One person approaches Jesus

demonstrates faith and is healed The evangelist tells the next story This

Gospel however is different Jesus is on his way to heal one person a

young girl of twelve and is interrupted on his journey by a woman

afflicted with hemorrhages She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd

despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding and stretches out to touch

his cloak She is healed Jesus meets her eye confirms her faith and

continues on to resurrect the young girl

Reading this passage it might be easier to identify with one story -- the

long-suffering woman or the young innocent girl -- and to move past the

other But here they sit side by side The girl is twelve The woman has

been suffering for twelve years For the Gospel writers number parallels

have deep symbolic meaning Between the woman and the young girl we

are not one or the other We are both None of us had a perfect childhood

perfect families or a perfect peer group As we endure pain

disappointment or unmet expectations it can feel like a part of our

childhood hopes have died Our coping mechanisms social adaptations and

hidden secrets can make us the walking wounded in some respects Jesus

wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding His healing hand makes

dead things come alive He awakens the dreams that are asleep This

process requires prayer conversations with trusted community and spiritual

mentors and critical looks at difficult areas of our life However we can

believe the words of our Lord If we approach Jesus in faith believing that

he wants to heal and save we too will hear his calming words spoken over

the hurts of our life I say to you arise Go in peace

This is a ldquobigrdquo weekend for several of the priests in our diocese as this is the weekend that begins assignment changes Yesterday Saturday June 30th Fr Jordan celebrated the 830 am Mass his last Mass at the parish After that his assignment at St Thomas More was officially completed and he left for his parents home as he awaits his move to the novitiate with the Dominicans Kindly keep him in your prayers

Today Sunday July 1st begins the assignment for our resident priest Fr Andrew Corona He was the pastor of Nativity of Our Savior in Portage when he had to take time off due to medical issues Now that he is ldquoon the mendrdquo he is able to return to somewhat limited duty He has been assigned to our parish as a resident and will be responsible for sacramental help He will be taking daily and weekend Masses and beyond that helping out as his schedule and his health allows Kindly keep him in your prayers as he continues his journey to health

In many ways our ldquoyoung puprdquo Fr Jordan and our ldquoseasoned travelerrdquo Fr Andrew are going through the exact same thing a transition They are leaving behind something that was very predictable and moving forward into the unpredictable They both know that the changes they are making will require the grace that comes from God

In our lives we make many moves many changes When we do so we find that our entire lives become affected by those changes We might find our prayer life affected and that can rattle us We might find our relationships with others affected and that can throw us off kilter Yet with every step we make into our new lives we become more confident and secure Until the next change And the next

Yes life is full of changes Without change life would be incredibly boring The changes may cause a bit of tension or even distress But as we go through the changes we find new depth new dimension in our lives Embrace the change that comes to us It is a means of growth
