The last newsletter this term! Where did the term go? It has been an incredibly busy one filled with so many special things including Father’s Day celebrations, Dress up for the Farmers Day, Book Week, grade six swimming, athletics events, camps, excursions, Science Week, Numeracy Competition day and the rest! No wonder it has flown past. Great Feedback We received excellent feedback about our student’s behaviour at the grade six swimming program. Our students were a standout in their attitude, cooperation and willingness to participate. Well done to all involved and thank you for the example you set and the reputation you are building for Kilmore Primary School. Working Bee Thank You On Friday after school, we had a working bee, which focussed on a general tidy up of the front garden area, stacking of the new storage containers and general clean up around the school. I would like to thank Phoebe Hanna, Will Hanna, Josh Hanna, Kester Wright, Stacey and Sam Densworth, Fisher Crane, Harry and Sam Anderson, Tom, Will Anderson, Coby Crane, Chris Anderson and Tina for their efforts. If I have left anyone off the list, please know that we are grateful for your help. Changes To Early Pick Up Process We will be changing our process for early pick-ups and announcements that need to be made during the day. We have had an increasing number of announcements and this is disruptive to classrooms. From now on parents/carers who are wishing to collect children early from class will need to go to the office and sign children out. They will be given a pick up permission slip, which they will take to the class and give to the teacher before collecting students. Please be aware that at times children are working in classes other than their home class so it might take some time to locate your child. Wherever possible please give messages to children about who is picking them up prior to the day. We are getting several calls each day asking office staff to hand on messages of this nature and it is disruptive and time consuming. We understand that emergencies or unforeseen circumstances will arise and will happily accommodate these. School Uniform and Hats It is time for the NO HAT NO PLAY policy. This is an Education Department Policy, which all schools must follow. From now until the end of summer, children must wear a school legionnaires or broad brimmed hat. Caps do not have enough protection and are not suitable. We do have a number of children coming to school with hoodies again. We will be reminding children that hoodies are not safe and not a part of the school uniform policy so please help us to enforce this policy by not allowing children to wear them to school. We do have a second hand uniform shop with very low cost uniform items if you need to stock up on the uniform jumpers. Foundation Enrolments for 2019 Please notify the school of any Foundation enrolments for 2019 with urgency. Spaces are filling quickly and numbers need to be known so that arrangements for the best transition possible and preparation for the year can be made. We are asking that all Foundation enrolments be finalised by October 31st at the latest. Thank you again for another amazing term of productivity, engagement and support.

Dear Families and Friends of Kilmore Primary School, Today you would have read in Kim’s principal report that I will be leaving Kilmore Primary School at the end of term 3 to take up the position of principal at Broadford Primary School. I am very excited about my new role and am looking forward to the new challenges ahead. The decision to leave KPS though was not an easy one. I feel very privileged to have been part of the Kilmore Primary School community for the past 15 years as a parent, CRT, classroom teacher, leading teacher and assistant principal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and am very proud to have been a part of such a wonderful school. During my time at KPS I have worked with many amazing teachers, students and families. I have formed life-long friendships and have many happy memories and experiences that I will take with me. I am very proud of our achievements at KPS particularly over the last few years. Our teachers work extremely hard and are very committed to ensuring they are constantly building their capacity and providing the best learning opportunities for our children. I love the many occasions when a teacher pops into my office to excitedly tell me about the latest achievement one of their students has made. I am very proud of the collaborative culture we have developed where teachers are constantly discussing the best practises to help students at their point of need. We have amazing students at KPS and I love visiting them in their classrooms to share in their learning. I am always delighted when we receive positive feedback about the behaviour of our students when they are out of the school – they represent us proudly on so many occasions. I love the friendly nature of our students, their positive mindset and their willingness to help one another. We have a fantastic parent community. It has been amazing to work with our F&F and school council and witness their contagious enthusiasm. We are lucky to have so many volunteers working for the best interests of the school inside and outside the classroom. Over the years I feel I have become a part of so many families as your children have progressed through primary school, sharing your celebrations and sometimes tough times. I love the chats I have with so many of you either out in the yard, as you are walking by my office or while I am outside on duty. I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing leadership team at KPS who I consider both colleagues and friends. I have been fortunate to have had been given many opportunities to develop my leadership skills thanks to leaders who have believed in me and I would like to acknowledge the impact they have each had on my career. Over the last three years I have been very fortunate to work with Kim Laffan - her knowledge, support and encouragement has been outstanding and now leaves me in good stead to take on the role of principal at Broadford Primary School. Thank you to each and every one of you for allowing me to be a part of your family’s educational journey. I will miss you all very much. Thank you KPS for being such an important part of my life and you will always have a special place in my heart. Regards Jennene Cooney

Being On Time Matters!
This year Kilmore Primary School is focusing on student at-tendance and arriving on time at school. Over the course of the year individual students and their families have worked hard on being organised – making lunches the night before, having school clothes and school bags packed ready for the morning and making sure everyone gets a good night’s sleep. Help your class win our being on Time Matters Award by arriving at school on time. Congratulations to the students who arrive at school on time.
If you are experiencing difficulties being at school on time please feel free to contact me.

Staying Safe in Cyberspace
Written by Shayla (3/4B), Eammon (3/4B), Amelia (5P) and Claudia (6W)
On Tuesday 11th September, Susan McLean spoke to students in Grades 3 to 6. Susan worked as a police officer for over 25 years and now she visits schools all around the world to teach people how to be safe online. During the workshops, students completed a worksheet to take home and share with parents. Susan shared a trick for remembering how to make good choices with the 3/4s. Always THINK before you post. T Is it thoughtful? H Is it helpful? I Is it inspiring? N Is it necessary? K Is it kind? Susan talked about two important words to help people stay safe online. The words are ‘Respect’ and ‘Responsibility’. She also said that sometimes people put fake information online and not to believe every-thing you read. Susan added that it is important to keep our personal information to ourselves. Never say where you live, your age, your school or your name. Some of the advice Susan shared with the 5/6s included: 1. Take a screenshot and report the sender if you receive something inappropriate 2. Be honest about your age. There are rules for a reason. So, if you’re not 13 don’t sign up to social me-
dia like Instagram, Musical.ly or Facebook. 3. Don’t ask for or send inappropriate photos Listening to Susan has helped us to know how to stay safe online and what to do if someone does the wrong thing to us. PS: Susan has a website you can visit to learn more. The address is http://www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au/
WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY COMPETITION
Write a Book in a Day is a creative and challenging team competition for adult writing groups and students
in years 5 to 12. Teams of up to ten have just one day to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To
make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Completed books are donated
to children in hospitals all across Australia.
Funds raised through sponsorship go to The Kids’ Cancer Project, a national charity with a mission to
support scientific research to help children with cancer.
On August 30th, Lucahlus, the KPS writing team, participated in the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ competition. The
team consisted of: April Burgess, Jemma Campbell, Rikki Dunn, Coen Huffer, Sean Lazarus, Abi Pearson,
Emma Studd and Brittney Upton.
The team started at 8:30am and were given their parameters for their story. The parameters included:
Primary character 1: a TV star, Primary Character 2: an Archaeologist, Non-human character: a dragon,
Setting: Uluru, Issue: Making a new friend, Random words: solver, patch, struggle, clock and prickly. The team
spent the morning planning their story. There was a lot of discussion, sharing of ideas, collaboration and
negotiation. After the team had finalised the plan, each participant wrote their chapters. Abi and April
illustrated the book. After the first draft of the story was written, the team read their chapters then gave and
received feedback. Individuals then edited and revised their chapters in order to improve clarity,
consistency, word use, spelling and punctuation. Once this had been completed the chapters were
compiled into one document and the illustrations were inserted. The team finished their book, ‘Above and
Beyond the Crystal Cave’, by 4:30pm.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the team for their amazing work. You are all a
credit to our school. Thank you for working so hard, working as a team and for producing a high quality
product.
Thanks also to Mr Thompson for helping with the technology needed on the day. Thank you to Mrs Evans
and Miss McKenzie for supporting all the Year 6 students while our writing team was working together.
A copy of the book will be available in the school Library next term.
After an initial round of judging, a short list of finalists for ‘Write a Book in a Day’ will be notified in late
October. Final judging will take place in November. Fingers crossed KPS writing team!
We would like to acknowledge the support of the Kilmore Primary School community. Also a big thank you
also to our local community sponsors Sonas Counselling and JM Huffer - Custom Dressmaker. We could not
have done this without your support. Thank you!

WRITE A BOOK COMPETITION
The ‘Write a Book in a Day’ team, Lucahlus, has entered a competition to raise money for The Kids’ Cancer
Project. There’s an entry fee of $310 and we need your help. The team is running a competition for our very
own where you guys write your own book. You could enter as a team or by yourself, keeping in mind every
team member has to pay a gold coin donation to enter.
To enter as a team, someone has to fill out the form and put it in Ms White’s pigeon hole at the KPS office.
You need to include certain characters, setting and problem.
All completed stories must be in by Friday 21st September. Please put all entries in Ms White’s pigeon hole.
The team would also like to thank those who have already entered.
Thank you everyone!

Another week, another costume! I love
dressing up so was pawticularly excited
to discover I would pack away my pirate
costume from Book Week and get out my
farm costume for Funds for Farmers
dress up day.
A whopping $798.80 was donated and will be making its waking to Drought Angels. I’m told that the idea for this fundraiser came from a parent suggestion on the school Facebook page. I haven’t got Facebook be-cause I’m not 13 yet. And, I’m a dog. The idea got passed along to our Student Representative Council and they came up with the idea to have a dress up day with a gold coin donation. Pretty pawsome how par-ents, students and staff all worked together to sup-pawt the farming community.

helped supawvise my
Grade 3 – 6 friends
complete their On

computers. I waited on
my bed until everyone
finished and then
enjoyed listening to
people read me
stories. My teacher
friends use On

Maths to help track
new learning and
future learning. I use
On Demand as an
oppawtunity to catch
up on some sleep.
Below: Mr Thompson and some Grade
5/6 ‘Techsperts’ ran a Minecraft lesson
before school for teachers and Labradors.
They even showed me how to create my
own Asha. Minecraft is good fun and has
many features that link to the ICT and
maths curriculum. It’s a win win!
Above: My pawket money and I visited the book
fair. Some of my friends helped me choose a book.
We settled on ‘Oi Cat’ as the cat on the cover looks a
little bit like by little cat sister.
Overheard this week on my classroom visits and yard pawtrols… “Asha, I’m wearing some of your fur! “Asha, can you round up cows?” “Your head is hot. What are you thinking about?” “I didn’t know you could run so fast!”
Numeracy
Problem of the Month
September
Put your thinking caps on everyone! It’s time to solve some maths problems. Each problem
below has more than one answer. How many examples can your family find? Be creative!
Give each answer page/poster to Miss Crowther and include student/s name and grade.
Foundation Mrs James lost a coin. What
might it have been?
Grade 1/2 Half the chickens dug up weeds in the garden. How many chickens in total might there have been and how many were gardening?
Grade 3/4 Mrs Laffan spun a spinner lots of times. It landed on blue most of the time, red some of the time and only once on green and yellow. What might the spinner look like?
Grade 5/6 Asha rolled two dice and when they landed, he subtracted one number from the other. The answer was 1. What might the numbers on each dice have been?
Due: First day of Term 4. Certificates presented at assembly in Week 2 of Term 4.
Maths Games Day
Ten schools, 88 students, over 50 maths
problems and four strategy games all added up
to a whole lot of fun at Kilmore Primary School’s
inaugural Maths Games Day on Friday 7th
September. Kilmore PS teamed up with The
Mathematical Association of Victoria to provide
an opportunity for students to work
collaboratively and solve a variety of numeracy
based challenges.
The day began with students working in teams of
four to solve word problems, followed by partner
challenges playing strategy based games. The
final event of the day was a fast-paced maths
relay that saw teams racing the clock and each
other to solve a range of questions, including 2 x
2 x 2 x 2 and 75% of 300.
Thank you to our Grade 6 student leaders who
helped MC the day and run the events.
Congratulations to our 16 Grade 5/6 students
who made up the four KPS teams for
representing our school with enthusiasm,
confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship.
