AAUW F-M Affiliate Meeting Minutes
Date: March11,2019Present: 13members,guestsandspeakersPresidentAlexaDucioamewelcomedallandwepassedaroundabaskettocontributemoneyandsharepersonalnews.AlexagaveashortpresentationonAAUWandouraffiliate’sactivities.Dr.CorySteiner,thesuperintendentoftheNorthernCassSchoolDistrictpresentedaprogram,InnovationinEducation.NorthernCassisaruralschooldistrictlocated25milesnorthwestofFargo.TheschooldistrictisthefirstruralschooldistricttohaveaTeacherLeadershipAcademy.Theyhavehada1:1technologyinitiativesince2006.Theyhavemanyadvancedplacementcoursesandhopetoofferuptotwoyearsofadvancedplacementinthefuture.Theyhavetherapistsoncampus,andasaresultotherschooldistrictsintheregionhavealsohiredlicensedtherapists.“Webelieveeverychildcanchangetheworld;therefore,wemustprovideaworldclasseducation”–thisisNorthernCass’swhystatement.NorthernCasshascreatedasystemdesignedtoprovidelearnerswithskillsratherthanknowledge.NC’sportraitofagraduateincludesthefollowingskills:organization,criticalthinking,accountability,growthmindset,self-reflection,collaboration,leadershipandcommunication.Why?Howlongdoesittaketocreateknowledge?Took15centuriestodoubleknowledge,then250todoubleagain,then150todoubleagain,andnowittakesonetotwoyearstodoubleourknowledge.Inaddition,studentswanttheopportunitytodowhattheydobesteveryday.Only25percentofworkersindicatethattheirpreviouscourseworkwasrelevanttotheircurrentposition.Thereisamajorgapbetweentheskillsbusinessesandcollegesbelievecollegegraduateshave.NorthernCassbelieveslearnersdeservetobesurprised,beabletoexploretheirpassionareas,andrevealtheirgenius.Learnersareuniqueandhaveuniqueneeds,buttheyareforcedtooperatewithinthesamestructure.Schoolstendtooperatewithinasystembasedonadultpreferencesinsteadoflearnerneeds.Learnerstendnottohaveauthenticopportunitiestoexploretheirpassions.Educatorsarehighlyskilledbutworkinabrokensystem.Apersonalizedlearningsystemwasdeemedtobenecessaryandhasbeeninstituted.Whypersonalize?Thereisamoralimperativetochangethesysteminordertoimproveequity.Apersonalizedsystemcreatesownershipovertheeducationsystemforlearners,whichisanactiveprocessthataffordsthemchoices.Learnersadvocateforthemselvesandaremet“wherethey’reat.”It’smoreaboutskillsthanknowledge.Connectionsarebuiltwithinandamongstaffthroughoutthebuilding.Authenticlearningopportunitiesareprovided.Personalizedlearninghasbeenlargelysupportedbythestate.Schoolscansubmitwaiversforrequirementsiftheschooldistrictdeemsthemunnecessaryorinappropriate.Forexample,NorthernCassaskedforwaiversofseattimerequirements,for8thgradestudentstobeabletoearnhighschoolcredit,andforcredittobeearnedoutsidetheschoolwalls.Learnershaveopportunitiestodowhattheyarepassionateabout.System-wide,prioritystandardshavebeenidentified,acommonlanguagehasbeendeveloped,behaviorsthatsupportlearninghavebeenidentified.TheyuseEmpowerforflexiblecurriculumandgrading,standards-basedgrading,sitevisits,andelementarycohorts(1-3and4-5).Therearesomemisconceptionsaboutpersonalizedlearning:screentime,socialmismatches,lessteacherinteraction/work,andstrugglingstudentsareleftbehind.Instead,personalizationprovidesequitythroughmultiple-abilitycurricula,specificinstructionalstrategiesthatteachcollaborationskillsandnormsbetweenstudents,agencyandautonomy,andhumanizationoftechnology.

From the AAUW Archives TheMoorheadAAUWBranchfilesrevealafascinatinglookattheconditionsandissuesof60yearsago.In1932athree-coursedinnerwasofferedat60centsaplate.In1934dueswere$3.00.In1935theprogramwastitled:“TheCinema:ItsInfluenceonChildrenandYoungPeople.”Asurveyofmembersin1938wastakentodeterminehowmanywomenwereemployedoutsidethehome.Theresultsshowed92%wereteachers.TheMoorheadAAUWBranchinthe1930swasengagedindiscussingimportanttopicsontheInternationalscene.SomeoftheprogramsfeaturedwereFascisminItaly,TheWorldBank,TurkeyandtheBalkans,DisarmamentandPeaceRelations,andtheJewishSituationinEurope.In1938MoorheadinvitedtheFargoAAUWbranchandthepublictohearDr.DavidBryne-Jonesdiscuss“InternationalGoodwill.”Onehundredfiftypeopleattended.

InMarch,theHouseofRepresentativesvoted242to187topassthePaycheckFairnessAct(PFA)withbipartisansupport.The bill is sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). We’reonestepclosertoensuringeverywomancantakehomethepaysherightfullyearns.Nowit’suptotheSenatetoact.WhatItWillDoThePaycheckFairnessActwould:
• Prohibitemployersfromusingsalaryhistorywhichensuresthatsalariesarenotbasedonpriorpaydisparitiesthatcanfollowworkersfromjobtojob.
• Ensureequalpayforequalwork,requiringemployerstoprovethatanypaydisparitiesthatexistbetweenmenandwomenareabusinessnecessityandjob-related.

• Protectagainstretaliationfordiscussingpaywithcolleague s,includingstoppingemployersfrombeingabletofireemployeesforsharinginformation.Greatertransparencyaboutsalaryiskeytohelpingidentifydisparities.
• Equalizediscriminationclaimsbasedongender,race,andethnicity,soplaintiffswhofileclaimsundertheEqualPayActhavethesamerobustremediesasthosewhomakeclaimsunderotherlaws.
• Supportemployersandemployeestoachievefairpaypractices,includingprovidingtechnicalassistancetoemployers,requiringwagedatacollection,andofferingsalarynegotiationtrainingprogramstogivewomenthetoolstoadvocateforhigherwages.
WhyIt’sNeededWomenworkingfulltimearepaid,onaverage,only80centsforeverydollarpaidtoaman—afigurethathaschangedbylessthananickelduringthe21stcentury,accordingtoAAUW’sSimpleTruthabouttheGenderPayGapreport.
• Thegenderpaygapexistsacrossalldemographics,ineverypartofthecountry,andinnearlyeverylineofwork—includingfemale-dominatedprofessionsliketeachingandnursing.
• Thepaygaptendstobelargerforwomenofcolor:Blackwomenarepaidjust61centsforeverydollarpaidtowhitemen.AmericanIndian/Alaskannativewomenarepaid58centsforeverydollarpaidtowhitemen.Latinasarepaidjust53centsforeverydollarpaidtowhitemen.
• Thegapexistsacrossallagegroups:Womenages20to24arepaid90percentasmuchasmeninthesameagerange;andthegapgrowsfromtherewithwomenages25to34receiving88percentasmuchasmen,35to44yearoldwomentakinghome81percentasmuchasmen,andwomen45to65beingpaid78percentasmuchasmen.
• Thepaygaphurtswomeninretirementbecauseexpandsandcompoundsoveralifetime.WomenarelessabletopayoffdebtandreceivelessinSocialSecurityandpensions.Menover65make$1,016perweek,whilewomeninthesameagerangemakeonly$782.
• Thepovertyrateforworkingsinglemotherswouldbecutinhalfifthepaygapwereclosed,and2.5millionchildrenwouldbeliftedoutofpoverty,accordingtotheInstituteforWomen’sPolicyResearch.
