Ministry Happenings
November 2012 ● FLC ● farmingtonlutheran.com
Hello to the people of God at Farmington Lutheran Church,
I cannot tell you enough how excited I am to begin ministry with you as
your senior pastor. Thank you for the tremendous hospitality you have
shown to me and to Sally and the kids. The installation worship services
and receptions on October 13 and 14 were filled with energy. As
Bishop Rogness stated, as followers of Jesus we move forward with high
expectations. It is a pleasure to join in ministry with great people. God is
at work in you, and has gifted you in countless ways. This is affirmed with each
conversation I’ve had. Whether it be with families, individuals, staff members, council
members, new members, or acquaintances of FLC.
I think one of the most important things I can do as we begin this new chapter is to
listen. The Church Council and Strategic Planning Team are working to plan ‘cottage
meetings.’ These will be opportunities to listen to you. A chance for me to hear how
FLC has been a meaningful place for you and to listen to what you sense as our
greatest opportunities and challenges and to listen to what inspires you and excites
you the most about FLC. God is at work in you, and is present in this place. God is up
to something big! As we pause to listen and hear where God’s Holy Spirit is moving in
you, we will better sense a vision of the future God is leading us into. Our ministry will
be stronger with your voice, and your partnership and participation. Please join me
for a cottage meeting at 6:30 p.m., Mon., Nov. 12 or 12 p.m., Sun., Nov. 18.
Thank you and God’s blessings to you as we join together in ministry,
Pastor Kevin Woestehoff
Come in out of the cold! Stop by FLC on Sat., Nov. 3 and check out all of the great

to miss it!

Who do we say that we are?
Pastor Janel Kuester
“As a community of believers, guided by the
Holy Spirit, we seek to do God’s will, share
God’s Word and celebrate the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ.”
“As a community of believers” are the words that begin our
mission statement. We claim ourselves here at Farmington
Lutheran Church as a community of believers. This claim
lays the foundation to the whole rest of our mission
statement (see above). We believe that we are a
community of believers and we know we need guidance –
and so we claim we are “guided by the Holy Spirit.” Know-
ing we, as a community of believers, are not left behind
without a presence of God, we can indeed boldly “seek to
do God’s will, share God’s Word and celebrate the grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ.”
On the last weekend of September, I shared in worship a
text from Romans 5 where we are encouraged to boast (or
in Greek could also be translated as rejoicing or
celebrating) in the things God provides. Since we believe
everything we have is from God, we indeed have a lot of
boasting, rejoicing and celebrating to do as individuals and
a community of faith.
“Therefore, since we are justified
by faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have
obtained access to this grace in
which we stand; and we boast in
our hope of sharing the glory of
God.” (Romans 5:1-2)
We have much to celebrate about these days around FLC.
We recently retired the street assessment debts and
celebrated in burning the certificate of payment in the
Emmaus Grove’s bonfire pit. We installed Pastor Kevin
Woestehoff in worship the weekend of October 13 and 14.
We received 45 new members into the congregation with
21 of those being children. Yet, the celebrating we did in
October continues into November (see the Celebration
Corner below for more details).
Side note: Check page 10 for a note from President Kris
Akin on the future planning of FLC.
Nov 3 & 4 – We celebrate All Saints in worship. We remember not only the
‘saints’ across time, but also those ‘saints’ in our own lives who have faithfully
shared and modeled the faith for us. There will be an opportunity during
worship for you to remember a beloved ‘saint’ in your own life too.
Celebration Corner
Nov 24 & 25 – We celebrate the 80th
Anniversary of the merger of the two
churches that became Farmington
Evangelical Lutheran Church. Look
for more details to come.

Council Notes Pastor Kevin led devotions. He reported much of his first 2 days were spent in conversations with staff. He
introduced the idea of ‘Cottage Meetings,’ as opportunities to listen and learn. These would be gatherings
with a list of questions to get people’s responses and ideas for the future of FLC.
Pastor Janel officiated one wedding, one funeral and performed one baptism in September. She also made
11 home visits, two hospital visits and 14 care center visits through a Lutheran Coffee Hour at Trinity Terrace
Apartments. She was present for Confirmation mentor training, Ministry Team meetings, Stewardship planning
meetings, Spiritual Care Givers and Bread for the World meetings and she participated in the golf event
sponsored by Adult Spiritual Growth.
Interim Pastoral Assistant Scott Simmons preached and assisted with three worship services in September. He
also made 13 pastoral care visits, led three OWLs Bible studies and helped Pastor Janel with the
Lutheran Coffee Hour at Trinity Terrace. Scott’s last day at FLC was Oct 5.
The amended final revised constitution was presented by Bob Brownawell and approved by Council. The
Special Congregational Meeting will be at 9:45 a.m. on Sun., Nov. 11.
The Finance Team reported September was a very positive and encouraging month. Income was $5745
more than budgeted and total expenses were $9368 less than budgeted.
Information was presented on a possible future Christian faith-based preschool at FLC. It was suggested that
two models be developed for review; one run by outside organizers and one church-run.
The Youth Committee presented a list of 42 students who had completed the requirements for Confirmation.
The list was approved by the Council.
The FLC Council will meet Tuesday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m.

Stewardship
Even if you have already received the annual fall pledge mailing from church, please read on. In
this packet you will find a 2013 Pledge Card and Time and Talent Sheet. Though you may have
completed a Time and Talent sheet in the past, it would be appreciated if you would take the
time to complete another, as the form has been revised and updated. We hope you will find
ways to connect with the ministries at FLC. The rewards to you personally and to our ministries are
immeasurable.
Please take special note of the explanations on the back side of the Pledge Card as changes have been made
in gifting categories. This is being done in an effort to more clearly reflect how your gifts are used and to simplify
recordkeeping as well. The 2013 giving envelopes will have three categories: Operating Fund (General Expenses,
Mortgage and Benevolence), Strengthening Faith (2011-2013 Capital Appeal) and a place for you to designate
Other-Dedicated Gifts. If you have questions about the pledge materials please contact the church office or you
may email Karen Brownawell at [email protected].
We encourage you to bring your completed Pledge Card and Time and Talent Sheet to services on either Sat.,
Nov. 17 or Sun., Nov. 18. At these services we will be asked to bring forward our planned gifts of Time, Talent and
Treasure during offering time. If you are unable to join us for one of the services that weekend, please drop off
your card and sheet by the end of November to the church office or mail to FLC. Another convenient option is to
use the drop slot at the kiosk in the gathering space.
We all have many things going on in our busy lives, but we hope you will take the time to look through the materi-
als, and prayerfully consider a generous response. Together, as disciples for Christ, we do make a difference.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us,
to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. - Ephesians 3:20

Announcing a special congregation meeting to be held on Sunday, November 11
to vote on 2012 changes to the Farmington Lutheran Church Constitution.
Dear Members of Farmington Lutheran Church,
“Hey everybody it’s new and improved!” How many times have you heard that and wondered, just what is new
and what is improved? Or, you might ask, why would something as important and basic as a constitution need
changing every few years? Good questions.
The FLC Constitution provides the guiding authority for the organization and leadership of our congregation.
And so, periodically, an effort must be made to; 1) remove duplicate and outdated provisions; 2) fix any recently
discovered errors and omissions, and 3) clarify and improve the procedures necessary to carry out the functions
of church governance.
Six months ago the Constitution Committee was re-activated for just these purposes. Its membership included:
Mark Pearson, Sara Otterness, Chris Patsche, Tim Grundler, and Bob Brownawell. After many meetings, extensive
discussions, and consultations with the Saint Paul Area Synod, this committee presented to the Congregation
Council what they believe to be a significantly improved document that is not only in sync with the latest Synod
and ELCA requirements, but also contains some new language designed to better handle some of the situations
that inevitably will come before the Council and Congregation as a whole. At its September meeting, the
Council voted unanimously to approve the 2012 changes that were recommended by the Constitution
Committee for this 2012 review cycle. Then, at its October meeting, a few minor additional changes were also
approved. The most significant changes made include:
The removal of numerous duplicate and outdated provisions.
A clarification of the selection and terms of church officers.
Allowing some flexibility in the number of members who serve on the Congregation Council.
The addition of new language in a continuing resolution outlining a more detailed process for electing voting
members to attend outside church assemblies.
The addition of new language creating a process for removing a Council Member who behaves in a
manner contrary to the interests of FLC.
The addition of new language creating a better process for the election of members to the Nominating
Committee.
Following Council approval, the next step in this purposefully deliberate ratification process is for the
congregation as a whole to pass its judgment by voting. Although it may seem that voting to make various and
periodic changes to the FLC Constitution is not a very big deal, in fact, it is. Your input and vote is extremely
important because we need the governance of our church to be not only as effective and efficient as possible,
but (and most importantly) as open, fair, and representative as possible for all members. Please contact or stop
in at the church office if you wish to obtain a copy of the Constitution and the complete list of changes.
A Special Congregation Meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, November 11 between services for the
purpose of approving the 2012 changes to the FLC Constitution. Please consider attending this meeting (about
80 members are needed for a quorum) which is the next step in the process of keeping our Constitution up-to-
date. If the vote is favorable, we will then be able to proceed with a final ratification vote at the Annual Meet-
ing in January.
Thank you very much,
Members of the FLC Congregation Council and 2012 Constitution Committee
Special Congregational Meeting
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into
your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” – Luke 6:38
September Year-to-date (YTD) income was $536,280 (does not include dedicated account income), this was
$17,000 less than anticipated. September YTD expenses were $560,755, which were $34,411 less than anticipated.
The expense savings were driven by payroll & benefits (Senior Pastor). September YTD net loss was $24,475, which
was $17,411 less than the anticipated net loss of $41,886. (continue on bottom of page 7…)

Find more information and purchase SCRIP cards at the SCRIP table, which will be set up on Sundays
between services. An all-inclusive list of participating stores is available. Generally cards ordered Sunday
are available for pick-up the following week.

that made the 2012 Holy Hoot a huge success. It was a
beautiful, warm day packed full of lots of activities for all
ages. Next year’s Holy Hoot will be Sat., Sept. 28.
2012 Holy Hoot
Kris Akin,
Congregational President
As we begin a new chapter with
the calling of a senior pastor, we
also need to give thanks for all the
great work that has been done in
the interim time. Pastor Janel has
worked extra hard the past six
months to lead our worship and organization. Her
role as solo Pastor was unexpectedly longer than
initially expected and on behalf of the Council
and Executive Team, we want to recognize Pastor
Janel for her dedication and commitment to FLC.
Her hard work and leadership is appreciated.
The future is full of spirit-filled opportunities for
Farmington Lutheran Church members and friends
to Embrace our faith, Encourage each other to
serve and share, and to Engage others in the
community spreading His love and His word. Pastor
Kevin will be asking and looking for people to
attend ‘Cottage Meetings’ to share and
provide input regarding our future mission at FLC.
Watch for this opportunity! These cottage
meetings will provide us a vision for our future
ministry. This vision will inform what ministry
initiatives we pursue and shape our future staffing
including the calling of an associate pastor.

or at the Welcome Booth in the Gathering Area. You
may also give through Pay Pal, found on our website,

FLC’s 2013 Women's Retreat will be
Jan. 5-6 at Mt. Olivet. Kris Meyer will be our
speaker again this year!
Those that heard Kris last year will be delighted
to know she is coming back with a different
agenda and new stories. For those that haven’t
heard Kris speak, you can look forward to an
enjoyable and inspirational experience as Kris
shares her stories with a quick wit and warm
spirit and lots of energy. Watch for registration
forms this fall - you won't want to miss this
amazing experience! This year's topic will be
“What do I want to be when I grow up?” The
agenda and registration brochure can be
found at www.farmingtonlutheran.com, under
the Women’s Ministry tab.
My name is Pam Schoolmeester. My husband Vern and I have been members of FLC for twenty-three
years. Within those years I have served on the church council, building committee, search committee, design
committee, fellowship and service mission and done gardening at the church. All these activities have
involved donations of our time and energy and have made us feel very close to our church family. We have
gotten to know so many great people at FLC.
We have continued our monthly giving and contributed to the building fund and various other fund drives but
would like to give more at times. I'd like to share an idea with you of another way to give that we discovered
this fall. I wanted to redo the landscaping around the south entrance sign. With Eric Ruud's help all the over-
grown evergreens were removed and we had a clean slate to work with. The big question was where would
we find the money to buy all the new plants. I have Vern’s mother to thank. She gave him his old gold class
ring. We thought we'd gather up any old gold jewelry (broken chains, out of date rings, etc) and sell it to our
local jewelry store. Hallelujah! We got enough to purchase all the plants and mulch for the new garden! We
worked with Cathy and Gary Johnson sharing our time doing something for our church we love to do by
creating the new garden.
Does this "sprout" any ideas for you to find another way to give? I'll never miss one piece of that old gold and I'll
treasure the memories of working with friends and enjoy that garden for years to come. Church "Gold Rush"
anyone?
Hidden Treasures...
