Jamaica to the World

Messages

The Jamaica Fashion and Apparel Cluster is

honoured and excited to have been asked to

showcase the best of our work at the International

Colloquium in Brussels. The Cluster is just over 1

year old but the members who will be showcasing

will bring over 150 years of combined experience in

the industry. In the case of Pulse model agency, they

are internationally recognized and their models have

graced the pages of every major fashion publication.

Sandra Kennedy, Mutamba, Biggy and Les Campbell

are all internationally acclaimed and are sure to

excite. Julan is the Cluster’s prodigy and she has

promised to make her mark in Brussels.

The Colloquium seeks to promote Culture and

Creativity as Vectors for development. This goal is not

only consistent with but aptly describes the mission of

the Cluster. It is the eclectic mix that underlines and

typifies Jamaica’s Culture combined with the

Creativity of our people that we will be showcasing in

Brussels. Consequent development will require the

hands of friendship and support that we hope this

Colloquium will engender.

Our mission is to take Jamaica’s fashion “To The

World”. In this regard Brussels will always be special

as it represents our starting point. I invite all present

to enjoy our work, feel our passion share our

excitement and experience that iconic Jamaicanmantra, One Love!

On behalf of the Jamaica Business Development

Corporation, I wish to congratulate the Jamaican

Fashion and Apparel Cluster for the work that it

continues to do in mobilizing its members for

international impact. At JBDC we believe that fashion

is the bed rock lifestyle segment of the Creative

Industries and has tremendous possibilities for driving

small business in Jamaica. In fact, we see Jamaica’sFashion Industry on the mecca for fashion in our

region of the world. Jamaica is blessed with an

abundance of superbly talented designers and

manufacturers, inspired by a colourful, warm vibrant

culture and brand ‘Jamaica, many of whom will be

featured at the colloquim in Brussels.

From the casual and elegant styles of veteran designer

Les Campbell, to the classic and formal young

designer Julan; from the Rastafarian influenced

Mutamba collection to the Urban/Dancehall wear of

Biggy’s fashion, capped with our signature Island

Collective featuring resort and swimwear; we are

confident that audiences in Brussels are in for a treat.

We are equally excited about the resulting prospects for

business matchmaking with potential partners in Europe

and expect that this will yield significant success.

Again JBDC takes this opportunity to say how proud

we are of the work and success of the Jamaica

Fashion and Apparel Cluster and we wish for them

success in this venture as they take it “to the world”.

Les Campbell’s fashion career began over

two decades ago in Montreal, Canada where

he attended the Sherbrook School of Fashion.

Following a brief stint in Paris after his

graduation, Campbell returned to Canada where

for over two years he worked with acclaimed

designer, the late Willi Smith - the man who

designed the wedding suits worn by Edwin

Schlossberg and his party in his marriage to

Caroline Kennedy.

Returning to Jamaica, Campbell established his

own design house and has subsequently seen his

work draw rave reviews on runways from New

York to London and all across the Caribbean.

His first foray into television came in the 1980s,

when he designed several pieces for another

celebrated Jamaican actor - Madge Sinclair - for her hit TV series,

Trapper John MD.

However, it did not stop there for Campbell. He was approached by the

producers of Ma Ma Afrika to become the exclusive designer of the

wardrobe to be worn by Jamaican playwright and actor David Heron in

the new cable drama series.

Les Campbell is now a household name in Jamaica.

xquisite patterns, gentle pastel hues, soft

and lavishly elegant fabric, all designed to

caress, cradle and kiss the body in a truly

comforting way.

This is the uniquely pleasurable experience

offered by Mutamba Designs.

The brainchild of Jackie ‘Amba’ Cohen, Mutamba

Designs embodies graceful simplicity and unique

Caribbean beauty with its rainbow-inspired colours

and its afrocentric patterns and designs, applied to

rich yet soft, all-natural fabrics. Aptly described by

one magazine as ‘a heavenly blend of ethnic chic

and everyday simplicity', Mutamba Designs are

renowned regionally and internationally for their

breezy, floaty softness.

Designer Ralph Lauren in Times Weekly lauded

her for her exquisite original and creative

designs. Sister-to-Sister, SHE Magazine, Trace

magazine are a few magazines that boast her designs.

Jackie's secret is in the lightness of the fabrics - her first focus. “I only

use soft, natural fibers like cotton, linen and silk. I don’t use anything

synthetic.” In addition, all Mutamba designs are 100% handcrafted and

hand-embellished. The dyes and paints are all natural.

Her biggest support is her life partner Mutabaruka, international

renowned poet and author.

If dancehall fashion is a religion then Earl ‘Biggy’Turner is” God”. This unassuming Jamaican

fashion designer never fails to amuse his fans

with his provocative, jaw-dropping designs.

For almost two decades, Turner has set the pace

for dancehall trends and has built up a formidable

reputation that stretches across international

borders.

Biggy has taken his designs mainstream and

dressed some of Jamaica’s most influential

fashion icons. He was inspiration behind the

fashion choices of Shabba Ranks whom he

dressed for the Grammys back in 1995,

and since then has added to his clientele Toots

Hibbert, among a host of international stars.

He draws inspiration from his everyday life.

"People I see around me every day, but more than

anyone else I get inspired by the sex appeal

of a woman’s body, the one that walks, talks and

breathe sexy.”

His garments continue to be sought after masterpieces and he humbly

accepts the recognition.

JULAN is a contemporary brand of clothing

with a bohemian flair, which focuses mainly

on the “50s” silhouette. Her source of

inspiration comes from a world of music, culture,

nature and art.

Born in Jamaica, Juliette Andrea Dyke who will

soon be known as “JULAN” studied Fashion

Designing at the Edna Manley College of the Visual

and Performing Arts in Jamaica.

While still a student, Juliette participated in their

Annual alternative fashion show and her designs

were promptly featured in Jamaica’s Flair

magazine.

Immediately after completing her studies, a

recommendation was made for her to join the

Jamaica Fashion & Apparel Cluster.

The members of the Cluster’s management team were so impressed with

her collection that they requested that her pieces be showcased in the

cluster pavilion at Caribbean Fashion Week 2008.

Pieces from her alternative collection can be found on Popstyle.com..
