Fashion Sub-Genres

BohemianIn fashion, the term ‘Bohemian’ refers to people who regard fashion as an individual style and are free-spirited. This style is also known as ‘boho’ or ‘boho- chic’.In modern days, bohemian has become a style related to festivals and summer including Aztec patterns, white frills, crochet and flower crowns. The stereotypical people related to this fashion are often artistic, relate to nature and are sometimes considered ‘hippies’.

Rock

Rock fashion consists of a punk style including dark clothing often including leather jackets, denim, chains etc. Large boots and studs are also popular in this genre. The people related to this genre often have piercings, body modifications, dark, heavy make-up etc. This genre is often known for standing out and resisting mainstream fashion and culture.

AlternativeAlternative fashion refers to fashion that stands apart from mainstream fashion. However, over the years alternative fashion has grown in popularity but still has a unique, distinguishable style. Styles relating to alternative include Emo. Scene, Goth, Hip-hop etc. People of the alternative stlye stereotypically have a large interest in music of the rock, punk, heavy metal genres. The purpose of alternative fashion is to not reform to the mainstream trends and to create a unique, different style.

The term Preppy refers to fashion originating from America which typically relates to American college fashion from university preparation schools. This style has connotations of smart, rich teenagers. People who wear these clothes will appear in this way. This fashion originally began in 1912 and was also specifically popular in the 50’s.

Girly GlamGirly glam refers to clothing which appears girly and often consists of tight dresses, skirts, high heels, bags and accessories. This is considered a mainstream fashion genre as it is very popular amongst the majority of girls. It is a dressy style and is associated with occasions and going out rather than a casual style. People with style are stereotypically related to music genres such as Pop which links with the popular fashion style choice.

Urban Urban fashion is closely related to Hip-hop/ Street and represents the attitudes and expressions of hip-hop cultures. It is a distinctive style and often consists of baggy trousers/jeans, denim, hats, trainers/boots etc. It originates from the youth street culture of American cities such as New York, Chicago, Houston and others. People with this style are often related to music genres such as Rap and hip-hop.
