ello everyone and welcome to May. We got lucky this year in the motorcycle industry at least here in New Jersey. The weather has been warm and dry. Just what we

needed after the mild Winter we had .You may notice that we have made an up grade in the paper for the magazine every year we try to make changes for the better. This time we upgraded the cover stock and some of the interior pages. There is a lot going on around the State in May as you can see our event calendar is pretty full this Month.. So get out and support some of the events in your area or make a day of it and take a ride across the state and check out something new.

Till next time... ride safe,

Willie G. to Remain Involved as Brand Ambassador, and in Special Design Projects as Chief Styling Officer Emeritus Motorcycle Industry Visionary Built Unrivaled Motor-cycle Design Group, Established Company’s Pre-Eminence in Styling Leadership. After nearly 50 years as head of styling, Willie G. Davidson is retiring from Harley-Davidson (NYSE:HOG) April 30, 2012. Willie G., Senior Vice President and Chief Styling Officer, is widely recognized as a legend in the world of motorcycling and motorcycle design. He will continue his involve-ment with the company as an am-bassador at motorcycle rallies and events, and through special design projects as Chief Styling Officer Emeritus. “Throughout my life, I have been truly fortunate to have the opportunity to marry my passion for design with my love for this amazing brand that runs so deeply in my veins,” Willie G. said. “What’s most rewarding has been to see the impact our motorcycles have on the lives of our customers. Everything we do in styling is based on the notion that form follows function, but both report to emotion.” Over the course of his career, Willie G., 78, built a design team at Harley-Davidson that established the company’s unrivaled leadership in custom, cruiser and touring motorcycles. Today, the styling department is led by 19-year company veteran Ray Drea, Vice President and Director of Styling, who has worked collaboratively with Willie G. in the development of numerous mile-stone vehicles. “It has been my privilege to work alongside many in-

credibly talented people at this com-pany and I have great confidence the future of Harley-Davidson’s design leadership will continue to grow in its pre-eminence,” Willie G. said. “I look forward to spending time with riders at rallies and to my involve-ment in special design projects.” “Few individuals have the kind of impact on an organization, a brand and a lifestyle that Willie G. has had,” said Keith Wandell, Chair-man, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Everyone with a love for motorcy-cles owes a great deal to his vision and talent, and all of us have been blessed by his presence. His legacy will continue to grow, thanks to the talent he has nurtured in the Harley-

Davidson styling studio.” Willie G. has long served as ambassador of Harley-Davidson at rallies around the world – meeting riders, talking to customers, lending his famous signature to jackets, and setting an example of being close to the customer that has become one of the hallmarks of the company. Grandson of one of the company’s founders, William A. Davidson, and son of William H. Davidson, its second president, Willie G. joined the company as its first head of styling in 1963. With responsibility for the look of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles, landmark motorcycles to emerge from Willie G’s styling studio team include the Super Glide, which established the factory custom category in 1971, Low Rider, Heritage Softail Classic, Fat Boy, V-Rod and Street Glide. He is one of 13 Harley-Davidson executives who purchased the company from AMF, Inc. in 1981.

Given that riding season is finally in bloom, I want to touch on the topic of DWI/DUI as many riders will end up at destinations where alcohol is being served. I feel that it is my duty to inform all of you that the penalties for DUI/DWI are getting harsher and more expensive every year. Though I have written on this topic in the past, it again merits discussion given the .08 limit in most every state. For many of us, this means that two beers or drinks in rapid succession will put us very close to the limit, especially if not ingested with food. While the penalties for a .08 to a .10 may not be terrible in some states, especially if it’s your first offense, two beers often leads to three or four and that’s when we start getting into trouble. The penalties for driving under the influence vary widely from state to state however, in NJ, in most cases, a first offense will trigger a minimum seven (7) month license suspension and fines upwards of $1,000.00 plus attorneys fees. Adding insult to injury, if you are a PA resident charged with DWI while riding in New Jersey, you will not have the opportunity, even if it is your first offense, to utilize the ARD program usually offered to first offenders in PA and in most cases will have your license suspended for one (1) full year in PA. Normally first offenders in PA, not involved in accident, will be eligible for the ARD program which requires drug and alcohol evaluation and fines but rarely a license suspension. However, this program is only available one (1) time, after that, in PA if you are convicted of DUI within the next ten (10) years, you will do a minimum of five (5) days in prison and receive an automatic twelve (12) month license suspension along with extensive fines and penalties.

If your blood alcohol is higher than .10 and you are charged with a second offense within a ten (10) year period in PA, the mandatory jail term grows to thirty (30) days, and another one year license suspension. Similarly in New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, for each subsequent offense, the fines, potential jail time and the license suspensions grow harsher with each offense. Now I know that every one of you reading this

column understands that if you are convicted of DWI/DUI, there are penalties. However, experience has taught me that most of the public doesn’t understand how severe the penalties and license suspensions can be. Furthermore, unlike most other criminal offenses, there is very little room to plea bargain on a DUI/DWI, as most states have mandatory fines, jail terms and license suspensions.

As a result, many clients are very upset when they learn that they may lose their license for up to a year, even for a first offense. Given that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, please be careful and if you know you may be drinking, a designated driver is always a great idea!!! Grandpa CoolLP Scerri

Old and orneryStubborn as a rockShaved head, Biker limpA wonder he can walk

Tattoos and scarsStories for eachYou’re wrong, he’s rightOn that he’ll preach

He’s ridden a scoot forty plus yearsGood times, heartaches, laughter and tearsDon’t give a damn, just the shirt off his backFinesse? Never quite developed the knack

But every year he’s SantaAt his Granddaughter’s schoolKindergartners know him asGrandpa Cool

Gruff, grizzledGraybeard and allLights up their worldSimply walking down the hall

A classroom helper three days a weekFinger painting, graham crackers, hide n’ seekCurriculum vs. Biker ol’ schoolIt’s computers, hi-tech and Grandpa Cool

He considers them his familyMore often than notHe’s their ‘bonus’ grandpaFor some, all they’ve got

Lessons of lifeAre not solely bound in textThey’re handed downOne generation to the next

The most important things we learnAre seldom taught in schoolThey come from those who touch our lives Those like Grandpa Cool

The CallingBob “Bikerwolf” Bryant

I answered a calling long, long agoA calling extended from the open roadHidden messages from leather, iron, and inkI answered it immediately, didn’t have to think

A decision confirmed by my very soulTime and time again as the scoot starts to rollThe smell of nature down every highwayThe thrill of the ride with every new day

People I’ve come to know as un-blood kinThe sun that has made leather of my skinBreak downs that have left me on the side of the roadOften times this life being a heavy, heavy load

Blue skies, gray skies, and skies that drop tearsFreedom my passion, Cagers my fearKnowing any moment could be my last rideI try to keep it real, try to exhume Biker pride

Been crucified, for failing to conformRejoiced in the sunshine, Rode out many a stormLearned from bad decisions made from withinHave ridden to help others, Have crossed the line of sin

I have bought many tears to those I loveHave shook hands with the devil, talked to God aboveI answered a calling long, long agoA calling extended from the open road

Memorial RideLee ‘Buddah’ Haverstick

It is in memory I ride todayFor those who fought for our country and paved our wayDon’t tread on me their motto toldWe ride here free and they on streets of goldI ride with respect for those who came homeFrom war-torn countries present and long agoThey all served with pride, on land and sea and in the skyAll paid a price and for some it cost their livesAs I ride today I will think of and remember tooThank you for your service, our freedom was paid for by you

A back country road, A crippled old churchScoot parked in the shade of mammoth old BirchRidin’ the wind, his heart cold as iceThought this a good place to rest for the night

The ragged old church all weathered and wornHe knew it was built, years before he was bornHe wondered how many hypocrites had walked through it’s doorsHad cast not just one stone, but one and many more.

He lit him a smoke, and started a fireUn-strapped his bedroll, took a look at his tiresSatisfied that the rubber, was still showing treadHe sat down to rest, lit another for his head

He stared at the church, as the smoke filled his mindBringing back demons from roads left behindHe rose to his feet, headed to the churchThat sat in the shade of the mammoth old Birch

The doors were missing so he walked on inWondered are old bikers welcome, let out a grinThrough broken glass, days last light shinedHe thought to himself, nothing much left behind

The only thing left that had not paid times costAt the front of the church, was a solid wooden crossIt was just barely hanging on the ragged old wallNever less it was hanging, as if it just wouldn’t fall

The old road tramp notice that the demons in his soulSeemed to have backed off, and his heart felt less coldFor the first time in years he didn’t feel so lostAs he stood there looking at that old wooden cross

He saw an old photo in the corner on the groundHe walked over to it, picked it up as he kneeled downIn the picture was a young man, an old bike and seedling BirchStanding beside A beautiful new church

The old biker was amazed as he muttered “ Well, I’ll be “He recognized the scoot as being from the year twenty threeHe flipped the old photo, there was writing on the backThe first thing to catch his eye was a signature “ Reverend Jack “

The old biker laughed before he started to readPartially at the photo, more so from the weedHe glanced once again at the battered front wallHe was truly amazed at the cross that wouldn’t fall

He turned his attention again to the words on the backThe ones he knew that were written by “Reverend Jack “

It Read,-------------------------------------------------To my side is my brand new churchIn my hand, a seedling birchI plant this tree for the simple reasonIt will grow tall and strong throughout the seasons

Birch is a strong wood, as is my faithIt will stand tall for many a dayIt is also the reason I used it to build my crossSo it will last, for souls that are lost

For I know that one day, a wanderer like I used to beWill seek the shade of a mighty treeI want him to feel at home if he enters my churchTherefore I’m planting this young seedling birch

May it give him the shade that he needsAs he seeks relief from the days heatIf this traveler’s soul should be lostMay he enter my church and see the wooden cross

Let him know it was built for himSo that his future will not look grimAs he rides away may he always think backOf the shade and cross supplied by “ Reverend Jack “

May this traveler let his past goMake amends with the demons filling his soulRealize that God’s on his sideIf in his heart, he’ll just abide

Now take care my brotherAs you go on your wayJust always remember What “ Brother Jack “ Had to say

-----------------------------------------------------

The old biker slept, peacefully that nightAs he realized Reverend Jack was rightNext morning before he hit the windHe emptied his weed with a big ol’ grin

He said “ Jack thanks for building that cross”“It has saved, one more soul that was lost”“Also thanks for planting that old birch for shade”In this old bikers life, a difference you’ve made”

The leaves on the old birch blew as the biker hit the roadAs if “Reverend Jack was saying “ God ride with ya bro”
