We, the people of St. Edward’s reaffirm our
belief that we are children of God, created
in love, diverse and unique. We believe that
through our common Baptism, and by the
power of the Holy Spirit, we are called to be
Christ for one another and to foster unity
with all peoples. We accept the challenges
of living according to Gospel Values,
and we invite all sisters and brothers to
share this journey with us.

Peter can be excused for thinking as a human does,
for he is human! But what gets him in trouble is his
mistaken idea that he knows better than Jesus - that he
knows better how Jesus ought to carry out his mission.
This is reminiscent of the Fall: Pride in one’s own
knowledge over that of God’s. We’re all susceptible
to that, and Jesus reminds Peter - and us -
that his way is the way.
All we need to do is trust, and follow.

“Trust in and follow the way of Jesus.”
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last Sunday, Peter was at the peak of his career when he confessed the highest confession of our faith, “You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God.” Because of that proclamation, Jesus called him “blessed” as he said, “Blessed are you,
Son of Jonah!” (Matthew 16:17)
Today, Peter has a different story and in a different situation. The same Jesus who called him blessed is now saying, “Get
behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are thinking not as God does, but as humans do.” (Matthew
16:23)
What happened? This is what happens when we are not thinking as God does. When we think and act as humans do, we
give Satan an opportunity to make use of us. That is why, Paul in our second reading today from his letter to the Romans
is telling us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may
discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) In other words, think and act
as God does.
From a human point of view, we can understand Peter, because we humans, do not want sufferings. Peter’s intention is
good, and that is, to spare Jesus from suffering and death. But the way of God is different, the way of Jesus is the Way of
the Cross, as he clearly mentioned in the gospel: “If anyone wants to become my follower, let him deny himself and take
up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
Peter learned the way of the Cross the hard way. In fact, like Jesus he was crucified and died on the Cross. Although, he
asked his executioners to crucify him up side down because he was not worthy to die in the same manner that Jesus died.
Again, you can log on to Formed.org and watch the crucifixion of Peter in the movie “Saint Peter” and also Dr. Tim
Gray’s lectures on Peter, particularly Episode 10: “Quo Vadis?” Peter’s Way of the Cross.
You maybe carrying a heavy cross today (e.g. health, finances, etc.) Do not give up your cross because that same cross
will bring you to glory. St. Paul tells us that, “We suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans
8:17). Remember, there is redemption in our sufferings when we look at them in the light of the sufferings of Christ.
Amen. -Fr. Roger-
O Lord, my God, You renew the Church in every age by raising up priests outstanding in holiness, living witnesses of
Your unchanging Love. In Your Plan for our salvation You provide shepherds for Your people. Fill the hearts of young
men with the spirit of courage and love that they may answer Your call generously. Give parents the grace to encourage
vocations in their family by prayer and good example. Raise up worthy priests for Your Altars
and ardent, but gentle servants of the Gospel. Give the Church more priests and keep them
faithful in their love and service. May many young men choose to serve You by devoting
themselves to the service of Your people. Amen.
Daily Mass with Bishop Gary continues!!

As the kids get ready to head back to school, share some fun
Hero stories with them! Honestly, sometimes a little animation
is good for adults too, softens the story and adds some fun
dimension. Who has read “Pilgrim’s Progress” - this is a great
way to discover a classic novel. “The Suitcase” - how can we
be Jesus’ hands and feet in this world? Beautiful to see this
through the eyes of a child! There are so many other stories to
explore on FORMED - what have you been watching?
A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR
A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a
challenging question, "Boys and girls, what do we
know about God?"
A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the
kindergarten boy.
"Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked.
"You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven..."

“When we are linked up by
the power of prayer, we, as
it were, hold each other’s
hand as we walk side by
side along a slippery
path; and thus by the
bounteous disposition of
charity, it comes about that
the harder each one leans

LAUDATO SI’
“A Season of Creation”
World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation September 1st
Loving God,
Creator of Heaven, of earth and of all that they contain.
Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we can be
part of Creation, your gift. Be present to the needy in
these difficult times, especially the poorest and most
vulnerable. Help us to show creative solidarity in address-
ing the consequences of this global pandemic. Make us
courageous in embracing the changes geared to the
search for the common good. Now more than ever, may
we be able to feel that we are all inter-connected and
interdependent. Make sure that we succeed in listening
and responding to the cry of the earth and to the cry of the
poor. May the present sufferings be the birth pangs of a
more fraternal and sustainable world. We pray to You
through Christ Our Lord, under the loving gaze of Mary
Help of Christians. Amen.
“A Jubilee for the Earth” is an ecumenical invitation cele-brated since 1989. This is the season for letting our prayer be inspired anew by closeness to nature - to reflect on our lifestyles -for understanding prophetic actions, and directing the planet towards life, not death.” - Pope Francis -
Some practical ideas:
* Learn to slow down, to care and appreciate all of creation
and share this joy with family, a neighbor or a friend.
* Say the prayer daily.
* Remember to have a break day each week. Put down the
cell/electronics, and spend precious time with the Lord in
nature, if possible.
* Keep planting trees, native plants, and enjoy gardening.
* We must save the bees to save ourselves. We have a bee
to thank for every one in three bites we eat.
