Basic Situation – Remote Data is Big and Growing

There are more than 4 million remote/branch offices in the U.S. alone, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many of these offices belong to multi-national companies based in other countries.

The amount of data in remote offices is increasing with the overall growth in electronic information and the requirements for longer data retention periods

However, the percentage of total corporate data in remote offices is increasing as companies expand operations into new markets and attempt to move closer to their customers, suppliers and partners

Result: large enterprises have between 35% and 65% of their data in remote/branch offices (per Gartner, IDC, ESG, Taneja Group, et.al.)

Remote Office Data may NOT be Well-Protected

Most remote offices do not have the IT resources and processes in place to provide data center class protection and recovery for their digital information

Backups are performed by non-IT personnel that have other jobs; they often forget to run the backup, or they do it wrong.

If it doesn’t get backed up, it can’t be restored

IBM has the Answer

With the introduction of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, IBM has the only comprehensive, cost-effective solution for protecting and quickly recovering remote office data and maintaining remote operations, following almost any type of data loss:

Lost or deleted file or folder

Virus attack or corrupted database

Disk or server crash

Local or regional disaster

TSM FastBack integrates easily into central data protection systems such as IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, easily adding remote data to core processes such as archive, retention and compliance

Quick Hit Value Proposition

What are the main benefits and key features of TSM FastBack?

• Disk-based, block-level, incremental forever backup technology improves recovery point objectives (RPO) through continuous data protection (CDP) with very little impact on production servers

• Policy engine allows you to balance recovery requirements with the costs of storage and bandwidth on a per-application basis.

• Replaces tape for operational recovery storage media with a disk based repository allowing fast recovery of mission critical information.

• Instantly recover files, folders, volumes, and entire systems

• No need for dedicated on-site IT staff by providing a simple easy to use interface.

in a Virtual Machine

Virtualization techniques like VMWare place extra burden upon individual applications and fileservers. These servers can ill-afford additional workloads introduced by backup.

Block-level incremental addresses this by virtually eliminating the backup window and load on the CPU.

This makes TSM FastBack a great solution for virtual system data protection in the General Business Market

FastBack Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager

BEFORE: FilesX was Tivoli Ready / Tivoli Certified in 2008 to integrate with TSM.

NEW TODAY: TSM V6 introduces a FastBack+TSM configuration wizard (shipped in the TSM V6 Windows client), to help with policy and schedule configuration when protecting the FastBack repository to TSM server.

COMING SOON! FastBack administrative management from the TSM ISC is targeted for an upcoming release of FastBack, scheduled for the end of this year (2009).

ON THE DRAWING BOARD: Enhanced integration with TSM for additional ease of management for recovery, reporting & monitoring.

We’re looking for:• Companies with 1 or more offices• Microsoft Windows servers

─ Exchange, SQL, Oracle, SAP─ Downtime costs $$$

• Using tape in each location─ Best-case RPO = last night─ Best-case RTO = hours

• IT managed locally in each office─ Skill level: questionable─ Backups < 100% success rate─ Restore requires outside help─ Management is time consuming

• Manual DR processes─ Physical movement of tapes─ Loading & unloading of drives─ Mishandling; storing at home─ Losing tapes off the truck

Solving the Data Recovery Problem

What can go wrong? Current responseResponse with Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack

Office staff forgets to run the backup, or does it wrong

Pray nothing fails until the next night (or whenever the next backup gets run successfully)

Automated, non-disruptive backup occurs during normal business hours in the background

Accidental or malicious deletion of critical files

Call tape vendor’s support desk and have them walk you through loading the right sequence of tapes, and hope you don’t over-write any of today’s data

Open the FastBack Restore browser and drag & drop the needed files back to where you need them

You discover that a critical database server has been corrupted (maybe by a virus) for the past couple of weeks

Good luck; you’re going to need to fly in an expert, and you’ll be down for days

Pick the point-in-time that you want to recover from and initiate a Virtual Restore operation; the entire database will be made available within seconds

The office is hit by a <insert your favorite disaster here>

FastBack FAQ

Q. Can I use the FastBack Bare Machine Recovery client to restore data stored in TSM?

A. No. The FastBack BMR client will only restore data from a FastBack Repository. For BMR from TSM backups, use the products from Cristie.

Q. Can I use the FastBack client to backup data directly to a TSM server?

A. Not directly. The FastBack client will only communicate with the Fastback server. You can then mount a FastBack snapshot to a proxy machine that is also running the TSM client and backup the files in that snapshot to TSM for long term data retention

Q. Can I use FastBack for Microsoft Exchange with TSM?

A. FastBack for Microsoft Exchange is designed to work with a FastBack repository for one step individual item restore. It can be used with TSM, however that is a multistep process. TSM 6 will have a tool to do individual item restore. While FastBack can work with TSM, we encourage customers to use the TSM client with TSM and the FastBack client with FastBack.

Q. If I have used the proxy method to backup FastBack files into TSM for long term retention, can I restore the files directly from TSM?

A. Yes. We license TSM for the client when it is backed up. There would be no charge for the TSM license to restore the data.

Dissecting the Elevator PitchTSM FastBack gives you the power to quickly restore any amount of Windows data, anywhere in the organization, from any previous point-in-time, no matter what happens to cause a data loss.

Quickly = time to recover is reduced from hours/days to minutes

Any amount = we provide immediate access to data, no matter how big it is

Windows data = This is a recovery system for Windows based server platforms

Anywhere in the organization = recover locally, or from another location if the local office is compromised

Previous point-in-time = recover data from before an event such as a virus attack

No matter what = lost file or folder; virus or hacker attack; corrupted database; crashed disk or server; local or regional disaster
