The activitiesof Ernest Hemingwayin connection with antiFascistand CommunistFront organizations in the United States are well known. InAugust, 1942, Hemingwayvolunteered his services to the AmericanAmbassadorin Havana, offering to assist in intelligence work in Cuba. The Ambassadorasked the opinion of the BureauLegal Attache in the matter, and wasadvisedthat Hemingwayhadsigneda petition denouncingthe FBI in regardto theDetroit SpanishEnlistmentCasein 1940;andhadmorerecently referred tothe FBI as "TheAmericanGestapo." Neverthe1ess;.theAmbassadorengagedthe servicesor Hemingway,whoset upan intelligence organizationconsistingof paid informants, the entire activity being under the personal direction ofthe AmericanAmbassador. In August, 1942, Hemingwaysuggestedthat GustavoDuranbe transferred from his Governmentposition in the United States toassist Hemingwayin his intelligence activities in Cuba.The arrangement
