Agifted Negro artist,Paul Robeson,one ofthe greatessingersof our age, came to Peoria. But the people of Peoria were denie theright to hear him sing. Paul Robeson is not only a great singer, he

is alsolatinewarmcultured personality.Abig man inbody, mindand sou .

At college, Paul Robeson was anhonor student and an Al1-Amer-ican end on the Htgers football team. As singer and actor he hashad outstanding success on the stage screen and radio. He is awell-traveled manwhosings in many languages.Because ofhis abil-ity to d.ng the songs and reach the hearts of the common man all overthe world, he has earned the titles or "Citizen of the World" and"Singer of People's Songs". This man has sung in the biggest audit-oriums around the globe. He has put his great talents at the serviceof his own people and of the toilers. So he has sang to soldiersat the battle front and to workers in their union halls and on the

picket lines. Perhaps that is why the powers that be would allow Paul Robeson no place in Peoria to sing his golden songs, exceptthe small living room of a worker's home.

WHY WHY? WHY?

Citizens or Peoria, we must ask: WHY were we denied the rightto hear Paul Robeson sing?

WHY was a great American artist denied civil rights and civilcourtesy in our city?

WHO organized the Hitler-like campaign of terrorism against this

noted representative of the Negro people? '

What vested interests were able to turn our Mayor and other cityauthorities into spineless jellyfish, using their law enforcementpowers not to protect Paul Robeson from threats of violence, but tocollaborate with the lawless elements who made the threats?

WHO, behind the scenes, decided that we were not intelligentenough to judge for ourselves the merits of Ir. Robcson's offerings.

Paul Robeson was engaged to sing at the Shrine Mosque on Friday,April 1B, 1947. His concert was arranged by Allen Cannon, part timemusic instructor at Bradley College. It was one of a series of con-certs promoted tor the sake of profit and to bring noted singers andchoruses to Peoria. Previous concerts had received good publicityand are reported to have been very successful and profitable. ~

But from the first announcements of the Robeson concert thorcwere rumblings of opposition, coming in the main from people conn-ected with and influenced by some of Peoria's big industries.
