FARMERS BUSINESS NETWORK

INTRODUCTION

2016 has been a challenging year for farmers. Heavy spring rains across the Midwest kept farmers out of the field for weeks, and more recent forecasts are calling for a hot, dry summer. On top of that crashing commodity prices throughout the late spring coupled with high input costs, particularly for seed, chemicals, and fertilizer, have created serious budget stress.

Farmers have made calculated decisions around crop type, rotation, seed variety, and tillage this season in an effort to combat these challenges. They’ve responded to time, economic, and climactic constraints by adjusting their agronomic practices and the products they use.

We’ve aggregated the information submitted by FBN members around these decisions to give you insight on national trends. We hope this information will be a meaningful piece of the puzzle as farmers move forward this season.

METHODOLOGY

This report was drafted in August, 2016 and includes approximately 4.9 million acre-events of data. The included analysis will be revised as additional data becomes available, and as a result of adding data, these trends may change slightly in the future.

Importantly, FBN farmers substantially outperform their peers and tend to be earlier adopters of agronomic technology. This is evidenced by national corn yield results as reported by the USDA, which reported 171 bu/A as the national average in 2014 and 168.8 bu/A in 2015.1 The average for farmers in the FBN network of 189.4 bu/A in 2014 and 192.97 in 2015. So it can be assumed that this data set biases towards more advanced farms that are more willing to experiment with practices, rotations, and crop compositions.

It’s important to remember FBN members are not evenly geographically distributed within states, and bias towards more advanced, higher yielding operations. To see where FBN members are in your state, refer to the member map on Page 1.

The number of brands revealed in each state are limited by FBN data sufficiency rules. For a brand to be revealed in this report, it had to have at least three varieties, planted on at least 2,500 acre by at least 10 unique enterprises. Brands averaged 21 varieties, 19,541 acres, and 35 enterprises per state in this report.
