FCD Prevention Works leads in substance abuse prevention through our constant innovation and utilization of the evidence-based social norms approach to prevention. We are proud of our worldwide reach and look forward to passionately continuing to partner with our unique client school communities using our effective, tailored prevention services.

Intensive Student Education: Our intensive student education offerings—the core of our workfor four decades—include classroom seminars, assemblies, workshops, roundtables, and virtual courses. We incorporate effective strategies to shape healthystudent attitudes and behavior. These include changingfalse normative beliefs, delaying first use, providing accurate information, helping students to become awareof the consequences of use, teaching students how to intervene, encouraging students to identify pro-socialgoals, facilitating discussions that foster self-analysis,addressing known risk factors and protective factors, and teaching healthy ways to get high.

Peer Leadership Training: SALSA (Students Advocating Life without Substance Abuse) is FCD Prevention Works’ model peer leadership program for students who have made the healthy choice not to use alcohol or other drugs. Reinforced by the socialnorms approach to prevention, the focus of this program is twofold: 1) to positively affect the attitudesand behaviors of already healthy young people and their community, and 2) to teach valuable life skills.

Parent and Family Education: Our parent prevention education programming, available in-personor via web-based meetings, equips families with the latest, health-based information and skills. We share how families can be prevention agents in their ownhomes, including understanding the essential role they play in keeping kids alcohol- and other drug-freeduring childhood and adolescence.

Professional Development: Our workshops and webinars for school personnel offer skills and knowledge, including basic alcohol and other drug prevention education, new views of prevention science and research, addressing of common myths, ways to encourage non-use, how to handle a student’s possible use, and early intervention health systems training.

Early Intervention Health Systems: We offer consultative training to help schools implement non-disciplinary systems for responding to concerns relatedto potential student substance use. Developing an earlyintervention team within a health system can be one of the most immediate and effective ways to protect students within a school community from substanceabuse before it becomes a health or discipline issue.

The FCD Student Attitudes and Behavior Survey: This 50-question instrument is designed tomeasure students’ actual attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol and other drugs, as well as perceptionsof behaviors and attitudes of their schoolmates. The results provide a wealth of data schools can use to quantify levels of use, target priorities for prevention, and challenge the perception that alcohol or other drug use is the “norm” among adolescents.

Train-the-Trainer: This practical training program for prevention professionals overcomes barriers likeschedules, distance, and funding that might otherwisestop FCD’s prevention message from reaching commu-nities. The six-module series offers the latest health-based information, as well as practical training thatwill better equip participants to perform their daily responsibilities as preventionists. Offered online or in-person, Train-the-Trainer sessions can be flexiblyscheduled for schools, community-based groups, conferences, or other professional association events.

Comprehensive Prevention Planning: We assistschools in addressing the myriad of factors that lead students toward or away from substance abuse. By supporting and guiding schools in their comprehensiveprevention efforts, FCD Prevention Works can help communities create a whole greater than the sum of itsparts—a school climate that supports and encouragesnon-use and healthy decision making.

FCD Prevention Works knows that each school community has unique needs. Fortunately, with our extensive experience, we also know how to pair community needs with effective opportunities. Our prevention specialists, a diverse set of deeply committed, highly trained professionals, are flexible, versatile, well informed, and eager to help keep healthy students healthy.

Institutions listed are clients with which we have worked during the past three academic years.
