The Prayer to St Joseph
Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.
Oh St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your divine son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, our Lord; so that having
engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.
Oh St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss his fine head for me, and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying
breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen

You Need to Know: As Father Stone just completed his rather remarkable Lenten mission with us on the topic of Capital Sins, especially pride and anger, I though this would be an excellent opportunity for review. “Capital Sins” are those considered “heads” or “capita” of other sins. They may or may not be mortal sins in themselves; regardless, they often lead to other sins that are ( I often call them “slippery-slope “ sins
leading us into something worse). They are also known as deadly sins. Capital Sins are usually considered pride, avarice, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. These refer both to the actions them-selves as well as to the dispositions or vices to perform such actions. In performing Capital Sins, one may choose a good in itself but do so in an inordinate or extreme way. Thus, it involves the turning away from the good that is God. Pride is first and foremost among the Capital Sins, as Fr. Stone noted. Pride can
often lead to a harmful independence from God as the individual exalts himself or herself. This goes beyond a well—ordered and genuine love of self. Avarice is an inordinate desire for wealth. An inordinate
desire for food or drink is gluttony, and on inordinate desire for sexual pleasure is lust. All of these represent goods gone astray, so to speak, resulting in evil. Aversions from goods are the remaining three Capital Sins sloth, envy, and anger. Sloth is an aversion to a moral or spiritual good because of difficulties
in its pursuit. Envy is upset at another’s good because of a perception of threatening one’s own excellence. Anger is the inordinate desire for vengeance or vindication. One who practices a life of Capital sins can come to hate what is genuinely good. In our contemporary culture Capital Sins can readily become a part of our lives, especially where objective moral norms are considered intolerant. Capital Sins are somethings to be guarded against not only during Lent– and are something about which
you need to know.
Reminder during Mass:
Fast & Abstinence

are obligatory days of fasting and
abstinence for Catholics.
