Feast of the Holy Family (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in their home in Nazareth, are an example of what every family should be: loving, serving and trusting in God. We end the year with the celebration of the Holy Family and begin a new one with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, one of the dogmas of our faith about the Virgin Mary. She is Theotokos, “Mother of God”, because Jesus is God, as was affirmed in the First Council of Ephesus in the year 431.

A new year is a fresh new beginning. It’s a great opportunity to improve and become a better version of ourselves in all areas. These days, when the family is so attacked and threatened, let us entrust ourselves to the Holy Family and especially to the Holy Mother of God. May they protect us always. Happy New Year! At the beginning of this 2019, let us pray for peace in our hearts, families, countries, and the whole world. May Jesus, King of peace bring peace to all nations. Blessings in 2019! God bless you!

Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia (Ciclo C) Reflexión Dominical

Hoy la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Jesús, María y José, en su hogar de Nazaret, son el ejemplo de lo que toda familia debe ser: un lugar de amor, de servicio y de confianza en Dios. Terminamos el año con la celebración de la Sagrada Familia y comenzamos el próximo con la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios, uno de los dogmas de nuestra fe sobre la Virgen María. Ella es la Theotokos “Madre de Dios”, porque Jesús es Dios, como afirmó el primer concilio de Éfeso en el año 431.

Un nuevo año es un comienzo fresco, una gran oportunidad de mejorar y convertirnos en la mejor versión de nosotros mismos en todo sentido. En esta época en que la familia se encuentra atacada y amenazada, confiemos nuestras familias a la protección de la Sagrada Familia de Nazareth y especialmente a la Santa Madre de Dios. Que ellos nos protejan siempre. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Al comenzar este nuevo año, oremos porque tengamos paz en nuestros corazones, en nuestras familias, en nuestros países y en todo el mundo. ¡Que Jesús, Rey de paz, traiga paz a todas las naciones! ¡Bendiciones para 2019! ¡Dios les bendiga!

R.I.P. Fr. George A. García

It is with deepest sorrow that our parish records the passing of Fr. George A. García, our former pastor from 1996 until his retirement in 2012. Fr. García passed away on Wednesday, December 19.

Fr. García was born in Havana, Cuba, on February 24, 1945. He studied in elementary and secondary schools operated by the Piarist Fathers in Cuba before leaving the island and settling with his family in Miami. He entered the Piarist novitiate in Derby, New York. He obtained a degree in chemistry and philosophy from the Catholic University of America and was ordained a priest at St. John Bosco in Miami on June 23, 1973.

After ordination, Fr. García taught at St. Bernard High School in Los Angeles, California before coming to Miami and working at Cardinal Gibbons High School, and as a chaplain and campus minister at the University of Miami and FIU South Campus in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Between 1983 and 1987 he served as director of La Voz Católica and as Archdiocesan Director of Religious Education after he incardinated in the Archdiocese of Miami in 1981.

Fr. García became pastor of St. John the Apostle in 1986 until, in 1992, he was appointed to the faculty of St. John Vianney College Seminary, where he served as rector from 1993 to 1996, when he became pastor of St. Hugh.

We were blessed to have him among us for 16 years, a priest with a kind and generous heart, in love with Sacred Scripture, and solicitous towards the needs of his parishioners. While we mourn his passing, we ask the Lord he served so faithfully to grant him eternal rest and bring him to his reward in heaven.

Con profundo dolor registramos el fallecimiento del P. George A. García, quien fuera nuestro párroco desde 1996 hasta su jubilación en 2012. El P. García falleció el miércoles 19 de diciembre.

El P. García nació en La Habana, Cuba, el 24 de febrero de 1945. Allí asistió al colegio de los PP. Escolapios hasta que vino a Miami con su familia. Entró al noviciado de los Escolapios con quienes había estudiado, obtuvo un título en química y filosofía de la Universidad Católica de América y se ordenó sacerdote en la iglesia San Juan Bosco en Miami el 23 de junio de 1973.

Después de su ordenación, el P. García enseñó en la St. Bernard High School en Los Angeles, California, antes de venir a Miami, donde trabajó en la Cardinal Gibbons High School, y fue capellán y director del centro de estudiantes católicos tanto en la Universidad de Miami como en el recinto sur de FIU a fines de los años 70 y principio de los 80. The Theotokos The Blessed Virgin as Mother of God

Reflection on Mary in the early Church revolved around her role as the Mother of Jesus. As the Christian faith moved into the Greek and Roman worlds, there was the danger of losing Christ’s humanity and his becoming only a spiritual figure. Early Christian thinkers emphasized that by giving birth to Jesus Mary cooperated in repairing the damage inflicted on the human race by the sin of Adam and Eve.

Yet, some held, as did the Patriarch Nestorius, that while Mary was worthy of all praise she could not be rightfully called Theotokos, Mother of God. He believed that there were two persons in Christ, the divine and the human, and so Mary should be called Christotokos, Mother of Christ, because she was only the mother of the human person.

To deal with this heresy an ecumenical council was called. It met in Ephesus in 431 AD. This council proclaimed that Mary was indeed Theotokos, Mother of God, by the human conception of God in her womb. The bishops in Ephesus emphasized the meaning of the Incarnation. Mary is not Mother of God in terms of Christ’s divinity. But when the Word united himself to humanity by being born of Mary, the Word can be said to have been born of the flesh. Since the divine nature and human nature are united in Jesus Christ, Mary can be said to be the Mother of God.

On hearing of this victory for Mary, the people of Ephesus responded with wild rejoicing. Mary is now seen as the queen of heaven who will intercede for the needs of her children. We too acclaim her as Mother of God every time we recite the Hail Mary. Let us always have recourse to her intercession: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

La Santísima Virgen como Madre de Dios

La reflexión en torno a María en la Iglesia primitiva giró primariamente en torno a su papel como madre de Jesús. Cuando la fe cristiana penetró en el mundo griego y romano, se dio el peligro de perder de vista la humanidad de Cristo, volviéndolo solo una figura espiritual. Los teólogos de la época enfatizaron que María, al engendrar a Jesús, cooperó para reparar el daño que nos causó el pecado de Adán y Eva.

No obstante, algunos como el Patriarca Nestorio sostenían que aunque María era digna de toda alabanza no podía llamársele Theotokos, Madre de Dios. Nestorio sostenía que existían dos personas en Cristo, la divina y la humana, y por lo tanto María debía ser llamada Christotokos, Madre de Cristo, porque era solo la madre de la persona humana.

Para hacer frente a esta herejía se reunió un concilio ecuménico en Éfeso en el año 431. Grove Outreach — Thanks to the generosity and solidarity of our parish and school community we at the Grove Outreach have been able to feed 8,178 households, serving 21,163 individuals (of those, 255 were newcomers), and we distributed 45,976 bags. Society of St. Vincent de Paul — The members of the St. Hugh Conference of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank all who have made our work possible through donations and helping with the baskets after Mass. In 2018 we made 210 visits, that is 4 per week, in our parish to help with relief in paying rent, light, water and other essential needs. Our income for the year was $57,877 and expenses of 59,972. Los miembros de la Conferencia de San Vicente de Paul de esta parroquia agradecen a todos los que han hecho posible nuestro trabajo mediante sus donativos y con la ayuda brindada en las canastas después de la misa. En 2018 realizamos 210 visitas, es decir 4 por semana, para ayudar a personas en la parroquia con gastos de renta, luz, agua y otras necesidades esenciales. Grove for Ghana — Your support made 2018 another fruitful year. We received donations from individuals and held three events. The children of our school raised enough money through the piggy banks campaign during Lent to fund a well. The movie night held in April and our October dinner were both a success. In total we raised $63,592, kept expenses under $5,000 and were able to send over $60,000 to the Diocese of Goaso, enough for 8 new wells. Su apoyo hizo del 2018 un año excepcional. Mindo Futures — Our team of physicians and volunteers for the Medical Mission went on our annual trip to Ecuador and brought medical assistance, 100% free of charge to more than 4,500 of our brothers and sisters. During our annual miracle of Mindo spring mission, that took place in May, we were able to distribute almost 200 school backpacks, that were filled with the school supplies and hygiene products that were most needed. This was made possible by the incredible effort the parents and students of St. Hugh school made. Thank you for giving these kids the opportunity of a future filled with hope and promise. Nuestro equipo de médicos y voluntarios de la Misión Médica viajaron a Ecuador en junio, llevando asistencia médica a 4,500 de nuestros hermanos, sin costo alguno para ellos, así como equipo médico, medicinas, computadoras, ropa y zapatos. St. Hugh Charities — Your kindness toward Mission St. Ann allowed us to distribute 68 backpacks, 70 food bags and 100 $15-gift cards at Thanksgiving and gifts for 103 families (about 472 gifts). The shelters for mothers and children victims of domestic violence received 34 backpacks and 64 toys for the children, as well as 72 toys to two social workers from Behavioral Therapy in Homestead. St. Hugh-Steinway Concert Series The Executive Committee reports that the 2017-2018, was a success with four concerts and a Gala in May. In addition to donating $2,000 to the Grove Outreach from its proceeds, the Concert series contributed $7,500 towards the purchase of the new Steinway piano, and with the help of three generous parishioners, all series donors, the series was able to pay the piano in full at the beginning of the current season.
