Sojouner Center BRAIN Program: Domestic Violence and TBIMaria E. Garay-Serratos, MSW, PhD, CEO of Sojouner Center, Phoenix, Arizona

Dr. Garay-Serratos will provide a brief synopsis about her personal story with domestic violence and TBI, followed by an overview of Sojouner Center, one of the nation’s largest domestic violence centers, and how the organization developed the BRAIN (Brain Recovery And Inter-professional Neuroscience) Program, including its partners, purpose and primary goals. The BRAIN Program aims to address TBIamong children, women and men impacted by domestic violence.

A panel of community professionals working in the intimate partner violence and brain injury fields will discuss current services provided to survivors of intimate partner violence in Connecticut. Panel members will give a brief description about their areas of expertise and how concussions and TBI can affect treatment and outcomes. The panel then will discuss the importance of screening and assessment for TBI and what follow-up will be helpful once a positive assessment has been made. Finally, the panel will talk about resources available to survivors of intimate partner violence with regard to concus-sions and TBI.

Optimizing Recovery from Brain Injury: The Importance of Sleep, Exercise & Nutrition Sarah E. Bullard, PhD, ABPP, Director of Psychology, Gaylord Specialty Healthcare; Lynelle Schneeberg, PsyD, Yale School of Medicine

This workshop will discuss the importance of factors other than medication in recovery after brain injury, with an emphasis on how to teach patients to pay attention to the basics, such as nutrition, sleep and exercise. There will be a review of how nutrition, sleep and exercise impact cognition and are altered in the wake of brain injury. Practical strategies and recommendations that can be employed in one’s daily practice will be provided.

Polishing the Executive: Neurochemical Modulation to Improve Fronto-Executive FunctionJoseph Trettel, MD, PhD, Director, Neurobehavioral Medicine, Gaylord Hospital

This workshop will provide an overview of executive functions and their underlying anatomy, physiology, and neurochemistry as it relates to optimizing executive functioning after brain injury.

Enhancing Quality of Life after Brain Injury: Person-Centered Planning & Functional StrategiesBarbara Nadeau, PhD, OTR/L, Quinnipiac University

This session will focus on strategies to help improve the quality of life for individuals with brain injuries including those within Connecticut’s ABI Waiver program. Topics including dilemmas in person-centered planning, goal setting, and facilitating participation in meaningful activities will be discussed.

Recovering from Concussion: When to rest and when to exercise?Anthony G. Alessi, MD, Associate Clinical Professor, University of Connecticut; Matthew Hall, DO, Assistant Professor, University of Connecticut

This presentation will address perspectives on sideline assessment of a sports head injury, understanding when to return an athlete to sports after a concussion, and the use of aerobic exercise during recovery from concussion. Additional return to play issues also will be discussed and case studies will be utilized to help illustrate best practices for managing concussion.

Traumatic Brain Injury: Stress, Neuroplasticity, Mindfulness, and Recovery Maulik P. Purohit, MD, MPH, Chief of Medical Services, National Intrepid Center of Excellence: Intrepid Spirit One (NICoE ISO); Department of Defense

This presentation will discuss the pathophysiology and mechanism behind brain injury, with the emphasis on mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and blast TBI (bTBI). The discussion will present the contribution of chronic stress to TBI and the interrelationship between the two and describe the state of the art practices, particularly integrative medicine practices, for beneficial neuroplasticity for brain healing and recovery using a novel paradigm of care. The workshop will include a short mindfulness meditation experience.

HelpLine: Through BIAC’s toll-free HelpLine, brain injury specialists provide support and resources for survivors, caregivers and professionals.

Outreach and Education: BIAC works to increase awareness and understanding of brain injury and its prevention through school, professional and community presentations.

Support Groups: BIAC sponsors numerous support groups throughout Connecticut that provide information, support and encouragement to survivors, loved ones and caregivers.

Legislative Advocacy: BIAC advocates for legislation to improve the quality of life for people living with brain injuries and support initiatives that help to prevent brain injuries from occurring.

REFUND POLICY: A $50 fee will be assessed for reservations cancelled on or before February 19th. No refunds will be issued after this date unless the Conference is cancelled.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Individuals requiring accommodations, including sign language interpreters, must call (860) 219-0291 by February 5th.
