Dinner Meeting Postponed in February We are POSTPONING the February 14th Dinner Meeting until February 21st. The Dinner Meeting will be on the THIRD Tuesday of the month instead of the second Tuesday. This is a historic event. I have been with the Section for more than 10 years and except for a Dinner Meeting cancellation, this is the first time I can remember us postponing a meeting. It seems we Californians are a romantic bunch. Perhaps it’s our proximity to all those excellent wineries (like the ones in Temecula). Or perhaps it’s just the sea air. In any event, our potential speakers would rather spend time with their significant others than attend a Dinner Meeting on Valentine’s Day. We suggested they bring their significant others to the Dinner Meeting but somehow they didn’t believe that would be perceived as a “romantic night out”. Go figure. Nevertheless, since we had no volunteer speakers for either Clinic or for the Dinner, we were faced with you listening to me all night or moving the meeting to the 21st. Good choice, right! Everything else remains the same. We have excellent speakers for the clinics and the Dinner, so mark February 21st on your calendar and take your significant other out to dinner on the 14th. The Annual Surveys were sent out with the January Scope. Email me if you did not get one and I shall send you a copy. Please take the time to fill it out and return it. It’s only a page and a half long this year and won’t take but a few minutes to complete. Don’t forget the stamp! And don’t forget we are giving $100 to a randomly drawn member for completing the survey. The deadline is fast approaching so get your survey in as soon as you can. We have a couple of excellent seminars coming up in February and April. On Friday, February 24th, Ms. Marilyn Snyder will present an all day seminar titled “How to Avoid Death by Powerpoint”. Ms. Snyder was our Dinner Speaker a few months ago. She shared a lot of excellent tips on using Powerpoint. If you use Powerpoint, you’ll want to attend this seminar. In April Mr. Raphael Natale will be presenting a seminar titled the “Vision Workshop”. Learn how to connect to your Core Values, create a compelling Mission and achieve the results you want in your Business or Life. Please see the information about both seminars inside this issue of the Scope. Remember; DON’T come out for the February Dinner Meeting on Valentine’s Day. Go elsewhere, be romantic, have fun. But DO remember to come on out to the Crown Plaza on Tuesday February 21st for an excellent evening of Clinic and Dinner presentations as well as great food and camaraderie. ““Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes yourhopes shine to the stars. Enthusiasm is thesparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge ofwill and energy to execute your ideas.”

Henry Ford.Achievement awards, what an award on your wall can do

to your ego! It seems that we strive to achieve builds our enthusiasm and

strokes our collective egos. What lengths we go through to achievethat plaque on the wall! Little does the average co-worker know theknots of our stomachs, the sleepless nights of the un-dotted (i) orthe uncrossed (t). To some it may be only a plaque but those of usthat strive to meet certification requirements, upgrades or to passstrenuous audits it is all that we live for, often for months at a timeuntil the quest is complete.

Our enthusiasm as Henry Ford spoke about allows us to havethat irresistible surge of energy and the execution of ideas! It drivesus and sometimes out and out controls us. Other quotes by Henrysuggest he was a Quality professional such as us consider thesequotes -

“I do not believe a man can ever leave his business. He ought tothink of it by day and dream of it by night. “… or …” It has beenmy observation that most people get ahead during the time thatothers waste.”

Because of the yearning for perfection and the elimination ofwaste, Mr. Ford was driven to success with many sleepless nights.Much in the same way many of us debate if the incurable (t) hasbeen crossed in preparation for the infamous plaque. So what doesthis mean? That all quality professionals are seconds away from awhite coat or do we simply see the picture of perfection through eyesthat are never satisfied? Either way we tend to be off centerline andobserve our places of employment a little different than manybecause we know the FMEA line is not without cost, sometimessevere.

So is it just the plaque or is there something deeper? I suggestthe latter for we must always strive for perfection regardless of howmany “Chinas”, or off shore industries lowball prices. We mustalways strive for the plaque regardless of the times. For we areQuality professionals always aware of the price of the plaque.

Now the winners for this years 2006 Baldridge awards for theFeel the Goosebumps?

Now we are the survivors. Impact our profession. Leave a legacyof success. Win the war in the trenches.

“Nanotechnology and Issues for Quality”

by Lynn E. Foster

Overview: Hype about 'Nanotechnology' as the "next big thing" continues although (or because) rela-

tively few fans know quite what it is. Broadly characterizing nanotechnology as engineering and science

in the 1-100 nanometer range, we then can ask if it will catalyze a landrush of new ventures, jobs, and

investment akin to the late '90s. The field has the potential to impact quality issues and manufacturing

management in the same way Information Technology has. After defining "nanotechnology," today's

seminar will offer a measured view of the work, players, and trends of the field unfolding in Chemistry,

Biology, Physics, Medicine, Engineering and Computer Science.

Takeaways:

• Nanotechnology will be a fundamental change in manufacturing.

• Nanotechnology will impact virtually every industry.

• Nanotechnology will allow engineers to design solutions directly

into materials by controlling matter at the molecular scale.

Biography: Lynn E. Foster is the Emerging Technologies Director of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, one of the

largest law firms in the United States. In this position he advises technology companies on technology

transfer, patent licensing, strategic partnerships and raising capital.

Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig Mr. Foster held technology industry positions in corporate, entrepre-

neurial and government settings, among them managing software development in the aerospace indus-

try, heading a startup, and managing a seed stage commercialization grant program. He serves on

Advisory Boards for the Nano Science and Technology Institute and the International Engineering

Consortium as well as the Executive Committee of the Caltech Enterprise Forum. He authored the first

Nanotechnology Trade Study and has directed eight Nanotechnology conferences and trade missions. He

also has 20 years of active and reserve service with the US Army including service in the first Gulf War

and Bosnia. He holds an MBA and a B.S. in Production and Operations Management.

by Akhilesh GulatiThere is many a slip between the cup and the lip. We

could adapt this old adage to organizations and say ‘Thereis a huge chasm between intention and execution!’

We are all familiar with organizations that plan, planand plan, followed by analyze, analyze and analyze, yetexecution does not occur, sometimes referred to as‘paralysis by aanalysis.’ It may be attributed to inertia,a p a t h y, or the knowledge that this is just another of thoseinitiatives that will pass – if we wait long enough. Usuallyemployees are right; they provide enough excuses to notexecute right now and soon enough the issue is forgotten infavor of another hot initiative! Why interrupt the smoothflow of work life when a new priority is likely to strike in amonth or so.

One could compile a whole book with all sorts ofexcuses for why a change cannot be made, why an initiativeis unlikely to succeed, why there is not enough time tocomplete a task, why more resources are required, etc.; yetthey all really sound like, “The dog ate my homework.”

World Class Organizations just don’t accept that. Theyare most often ‘Execution Obsessed.’ In such organizationsone is unlikely to hear, “They do not pay me enough.”Instead employees are charged up with the spirit of theorganization, and achieving results through execution turnsout to be a huge motivator. People enjoy not only resultsand the high it gives them, but also developing other peoplewithin the organization. Its like winning begets winning. The organization creates leaders that others covet. Insteadof lethargy or a litany of excuses, there is action, not justa c t i v i t y, with a clear focus on results.

Planning, measurement, analysis and sustenance ofresults is all part of an organization that exhibits ExecutionObsession. Instead of haphazardly selecting improvementprojects (like many organizations pursuing six sigmatoday), these organizations use a two pronged approach: 1)a systematic planning methodology for long-range keyorganizational objectives – practically fixed as a guide for 3-

5 years, and 2) day to day business measures for continuousbusiness process improvement.

This Execution Obsession provides unity of purpose andfocus, plans to support the objective, clear linkage of dailymeasures to strategic goals, a defined process to reviewprogress, and the quest for continuous improvement.Change becomes ingrained in the people and execution forresults becomes a motivator. Organization learning andmutual development result from such organizationaldirection. Excuses become a thing of the past; people stickaround and perform for reasons other than money.

I am sure most of you have seen microcosms of thisWinning Culture where success begets success, where thereis excitement in the air for the results achieved, and for the motivation it creates. But then you must have also seen it fade away soon – because the execution is notsustained, because the organizational goals may beambiguous or changing too frequently to provide anymodicum of continuity. For a Winning Culture, the twopronged approach works well: Long Term Planning andExecution Obsession!
