  • Greetings! Fall is here along with busy schedules, school, sports, and illness. I feel it came faster this year; however, maybe I say that every year?!

I apologize that I had to miss our September GMM meeting. That is a meeting I never like to miss and I am so sorry I did. I have heard wonderful things about the meeting and the venue. Thank you so much Steve Mau and Brainerd General Rental. I heard great things about your new shop and will need to stop in and tour soon. I also want to thank Ernie’s for the food; from what I hear, it was splendid.

The end of the year is bittersweet. I want to express my thanks and gratitude to several board members who have finished up their term with the association. Gerry Traut has served on the board for 10 years. He was our president 2 terms back and has served on the Executive Board. Thank you, Gerry, for all you have done. Larry Oaks has served on our board for 3 years and so has Wes Mink. Thanks to both of you for your time and energy spent being so involved. We will miss

you; however, I know all three of you will still be involved and we will see you at some of our many great events. Thank you again for your years of service and dedication.

With change over of the board, I am honored and thrilled to announce our new board members for 2020, Justin Berg, Kevin Kleinschmidt, and Mike Rodahl. I know I speak for all when I say we are excited to have you on the board and I, personally, look forward to working with you.

Lumber and Lace is fast approaching and I know the committee has put in a lot of work to make the second annual a success. It will take place at the NP Event Space on October 10th. Call Colleen or Tracy 218-829-4982 to get information on sponsorship; we still have some available. I hope to see you all at the event.

  • BRAINERD GENERAL RENTAL HOSTS SEPTEMBER GMM:Special thanks to Steve Mau and Brainerd General Rental for hosting the September General Membership Meeting. Members had the opportunity to take a closer look at their new building; what an amazing facility.

Brainerd General Rental was founded in 1993. Owned and operated by Steve and Maureen Mau since 2002, their mission is to provide great equipment at a fair price with exceptional service. The business has expanded from equipment rental to sales and service as well. Brainerd General Rental is now an equipment dealer providing rental, sales and service for Toro, ASV, Genie, Yanmar, Husqvarna Construction, Virnig and Wacker Neusan. Most recently, they have moved into a new state of the art sales, rental and service center built on the same property. They are certified as aerial lift trainers.

Brainerd General Rental is heavily involved with the Brainerd Lakes area. Being a part of this community is at the heart of who they are and what they do. A few years ago, they decided that they could do more than provide financial resources to support area non-profits and began the Rent to the Max campaign. The intention was to not only raise money, but create awareness around area non-profits. Brainerd General Rental is a family first, a business second and they are Lakes Proud! Stop by today to see how they can help you with your next project.

Special Thanks to Chris Foy, Cody Bock and Ernie’s on Gull for catering the event. The food was delicious as always.

  • MEET THE LEADERSHIP ________________________________________________________________________

    MEET THE LEADERSHIP

Sam Horn, American National Bank of Minnesota, IncumbentI have been actively involved in MMBA since 2008. I have sat on almost every committee the association has to offer at time or another. Today, as your president, I also sit on the Executive Committee, Home Show/Home Tour Committee, Golf Tournament Committee, and Scholarship Committee. In 2008, I became active in the association mainly to network. Since

then, I have become very passionate about our industry and have met great people and developed wonderful working relationships and friendships. When I am not at an MMBA event, I am working as a mortgage loan specialist at American National Bank of Minneso-ta in Baxter. I work with customers to achieve the home ownership dreams, whether it be a first- time home purchase, new construction loan, refinance of an existing home, or purchase of a vacation home or investment home. I been a loan officer since 2007.I moved to Baxter from the Twin Cities after I got married in 2002. I have an almost 16-year-old son and a 12-year- old daughter. Both of my kids are very active in sports. Most of our weekends are spent watching our kids playing

football, hockey, golf, and/or dance. When we have free time, my family enjoys boating and camping.

Justin Berg, Nor-Son Custom BuildersI have been working in the construction industry for over 25 years. I started my career with Nor-Son as a carpenter over 18 years ago. Currently, I am the General Superinten-dent for our Custom Homes division where I help coordinate, plan and supervise project field activities with superintendents, foremen, craftsmen and sub-contractors. I work hard to ensure our projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with the highest level of

quality possible.Every year I look forward in participating in the Tool Schools program. I feel it is a great opportunity to get into the schools and talk to the kids about opportunities in the construction field and discuss entry points into the trades, whether they decide to go to college or not. Also, had the opportunity to represent a team at the construction con-test held at the 2019 Home Show. This event allowed the kids to show off skills they learned through the year in their school’s carpentry program. I was very impressed of the team’s work ethic, ability to take direction and ability

to work well as a team.

Kevin Kleinschmidt, TJ Specialty Construction, Inc.I am the co-owner of TJ Specialty Construction, a custom home builder in Brainerd. One could say that I grew up in the construction industry. My father, Jim Klein-schmidt, founded the company in 1990. I began working in the family business from a very young age, learning the trade from the inside out. After high school, I attended DeVry University in Phoenix for Electronics Engineer-

ing. After college, I returned to the Brainerd area and to the family business. I brought my computer expertise to TJ Specialty Construction, modernizing business operations at every level. I became part owner of the company in 2005. Upon my father’s retirement in 2017, my business partner, Jayme Gottsch and I became co-owners of the company. I currently oversee daily operations and do sales and estimat-

ing. I enjoy working with clients, making their plans and dreams for their projects come to life.TJ Specialty Construction has held an MMBA membership since 2011. We see value in membership, because it supports the construction industry, the carpentry trade, and it furthers legislation that is favorable to builders. I look forward to beginning active involvement with the MMBA in order to stay connected with other area builders and associate members, and to contribute to the community through the MMBA events.

Mike Rodahl, Stonehenge Properties, LLCI am a co-owner of Stonehenge Properties LLC. established in the lakes area in 2005. We primarily started out as a real estate investment company that specialized in buying, improving and selling residential properties. Along the way, we invested in rental homes, and managed and maintained many properties. Today, the compa-

ny looks much different. Stonehenge Properties has become well known as a residential remodeling specialist. I love the creativity that comes along with my work. Rehabbing and improving my clients’ homes brings me a lot of satisfaction. I am a hands-on owner that works alongside my hired craftsman making sure every detail is how the homeowner wants it done. Quality work and finish is a top priority for Stonehenge. I work hard and put a lot of time in, but believe in the motto “Work Hard, Play Hard”. I am married to Michelle Rodahl, a local realtor and have 3 children. We find time to enjoy many of the benefits of living in the beautiful lakes area. I find that my strengths are being a good communicator, always striving for excellence, and having vision to guide clients in realizing their home remodeling dreams.

Stonehenge Properties joined the MMBA a few years back to get better connected with those in the industry. I feel it has really benefitted me and my business.

    Member Spotlight

Tell us about Marvin Windows & Doors and what your position is the company.

At Marvin, we’re driven by this purpose: to imagine and create better ways of living.

As people spend more time indoors, we recognize that our work isn’t just about building better windows and doors—it’s about opening new possibilities for how people live, work, think and feel inside a Marvin space.

Since the day we opened our doors in 1912 as a family-owned and -operated cedar and lumber company in Warroad MN, we’ve looked for ways to help peo-ple live better. We continue to evolve by raising the bar, building quality, beauty and simplicity into people’s everyday lives.

We are Marvin, and this is our story — thank you for being part of it.

Why did you first get involved with MMBA?

It was a great resource to meet mem-bers of the local building community and has been a great opportunity to support an organization dedicated to serving our area.

Are there any causes to which Marvin Windows & Doors volunteers or donates?

We put people first — not just in how we design, but in how we build for the

future. We commit to long-lasting and trusting relationships with our employ-ees, customers, partners and communi-ties, and are there for them when they need us most.

What might someone be surprised to know about Marvin Windows & Doors?

We started as a Lumber & Cedar com-pany and it was one of the Second-Gen-eration Marvin boys that accidentally transformed us into the window busi-ness!

What do you think will change about Mar-vin Windows & Doors over the next five years?

There has been a strong push towards maintenance free and pre-finished product recently and it will be interest-ing to watch if this trend continues.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining MMBA?

I would strongly recommend it because it has helped me to grow my business and to make strong connections in the area. I would also tell a new member to be active and participate in local events.

What else can you tell me about Marvin Windows & Doors?

    We push boundaries!

Rather than meeting expectations, we push ourselves to elevate the standard for excellence. Whether we’re replicat-ing historic millwork, engineering un-interrupted views or improving energy performance, we look for what we can do better — and then we design it.

If you weren’t working at Marvin Win-dows & Doors what would you be doing instead?

I’ve always viewed Marvin as the top of our industry, it was my dream job to be their sales rep and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else!

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

NAHB Builder Urges Congress to Promote Green Initiatives

NAHB told Congress that it wants to work as a partner with officials at all levels of government to encourage en-ergy efficiency, but also stressed that it is urgent that housing affordability is not jeopardized in the process.

Testifying on behalf of NAHB before the House Energy and Commerce Sub-committee on Energy, Arn McIntyre, a green builder from Grand Rapids, Mich., urged Congress to promote voluntary, market-driven and viable green building initiatives.

“These programs lower total ownership costs through utility savings as well as provide the flexibility builders need to construct homes that are cost-effective, affordable and appropriate to a home’s geographic location,” said McIntyre.

New home construction is much more energy efficient than existing con-struction because of better insulation, energy-efficient appliances and HVAC equipment, and other improvements stemming from compliance to more modern and stringent building codes.

Therefore, McIntyre said, it would make no sense to apply even more costly and rigorous energy conservation require-ments to new homes.

“Targeting new homes would harm housing affordability and encourage people to remain in older, less ener-gy-efficient homes. In turn, this would result in higher energy usage, higher greenhouse gas emissions and lower standards of living,” he said. “Improving the energy efficiency of the 130 million homes built before 2010 that are much less energy efficient than today’s new homes is a much more effective ap-proach to reduce carbon emissions and achieve energy savings.”

McIntyre also emphasized the following points to lawmakers:

    · Climate change mitigation pro-grams that recognize and promote voluntary-above code compliance for energy efficiency have a proven track record and demonstrate that mandates are not necessary.· Mandating net zero or near net

zero energy emissions or usage is extremely difficult, costly and im-practical in most, if not all, of the nation.· Any federal intrusion into the building codes adoption process could have a dramatic impact on each states’ ability to implement the codes that best fit their jurisdiction.· Incentives play an important role in providing home owners a cost-effective way to invest in energy efficiency.· Any federal mandates would have a negative impact on housing affordability and will prevent healthy competition in the marketplace.
