Two recent studies highlight the potential for non-drug alternatives on cases of high blood pressure. Researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico report that spirulina, a “green food” supplement also known as blue-green algae, may lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol health.

Iron provides vital energy. Are you frequently tired? Do you feel listless? Or do you have pale skin? Do you have an inability to think clearly? If so, the cause may be an unbalanced iron supply.

This trace element is primarily respon-sible for the production of red blood cells and thus for the vital transport of oxygen through the bloodstream.

Without iron, the cells and organs are not suffi ciently supplied with oxygen, the accelerant for energy metabolism and vital energy.

IronVital F® liquid helps fulfi ll your daily requirement for iron and contains iron in bivalent form. The combination of vitamin C in IronVital F® helps the iron to be absorbed readily by the human body, while the B vitamins enhance the effects of the iron.

IronVital F® has a pleasant fruit taste and is the superior liquid choice if you need more daily iron especially as follows...• during pregnancy• when breastfeeding• women with heavier bleeding

during menstruation• young people in a growth phase• during regular intense exercise

Iron is a mineral most of us are familiar with. Not surprising, given that iron deficiency is often associated with fatigue, a common and inconvenient factor in modern life. From a nutritional viewpoint, iron is an essential trace mineral in the human diet. Dietary sources include red meat, liver, shellfish, sardines, beans, peas, lentils, and whole grains.

Putting Iron to WorkYour body needs iron to produce hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying pigment in blood cells. Myoglobin is the pigment that stores oxygen in muscle cells. Iron also has a role in the function of several enzymes where it’s involved in oxygen uptake facilitating the conversion of oxygen to energy in blood cells. Adult bodies contain approximately 4.5 grams of iron. About 60 to 70 percent of which is contained in hemoglo-bin, 3 percent in myoglobin, and the remainder is stored in various organs including the liver, spleen, kidney, and bone marrow as ferritin, hemosiderin, and siderophilin.

Iron DeficiencyIron deficiency, known as anemia, is a fairly common medical condition caused by a variety of factors, including poor iron absorption and inadequate intake of iron and/or co-factors such as vitamin C that increase the absorption of iron. Other factors leading to anemia include traumatic or menstrual blood loss, pregnancy, parasitic infections, and micro-hemorrhaging due to strenuous exercise or fragile blood ves-sels. High intake of oxalates (e.g. spinach and rhubarb), polyphenolic compounds (e.g.tea and coffee), and phytates (e.g. cereal fibre) can also inhibit iron absorption. Indications of iron deficiency include fatigue, paleness, short-ness of breath, irritability, apathy, and reduced resistance to infection. Athletes, pregnant women, and menstruating women suffering from cyclical blood loss are often prone to iron deficiency. Iron deficiencies in men who do not participate in strenuous activities are much less common.

Iron SupplementsIron comes in several forms including ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, iron dextran, and iron-polysaccharide com-plex. Ferrous sulfate is problematic for many, often causing constipation and digestive upset.

Chelated iron, including ferrous gluconate, particularly if formulated with vita-mins C and B complex, is usually well absorbed and easily tolerated by comparison. Recommendations regarding iron intake vary from 10 to 30 mg per day - but low-dosage, high-absorption supple-ments are preferred. Iron formulations are available in tablets, capsules, and liquid from your local health food store.

Too Much IronAlthough iron deficiency is common, excess iron is actually more common with older men and post-menopausal women. A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that of 1,000 participants between the ages of 67 to 96, 13 percent had excess iron whereas only three percent were iron deficient.

The characteristics that make iron so useful in oxygen transport and oxygen-reduction reac-tions also make it a very effective free radical if present in amounts in excess of what is required by the body. Extremely high doses of iron or the genetic predisposition to accumulate iron have the potential to damage tissues. People consuming large amounts of iron rich foods or exclusively using iron pots and pans may have some reason for concern. Symptoms of excess iron include dehydration, low blood sugar and blood pressure, fever, and drowsiness. Given iron’s dual nature, ferritin and hemoglobin lev-els should be tested by a qualified practitioner before supplementing.

Calcium and Iron InteractionWhile it has been suggested that calcium supplementation inhibits iron absorption (and vice versa), the evidence is contradictory at this point. If you require both iron and calcium supplements, it is probably best to take your iron in the morning and calcium later in the day just in case.

Taking a supplement of ginkgo biloba can help boost the memory and memory function of the elderly, but only if people comply and take it as instructed, accord-ing to researchers from Oregon State University. In fact, reliably taking the supplement could reduce the risk of developing mild memory problems by 68% in healthy older people with no memory problems to start with.

Leaves of the ginkgo tree have been used for thou-sands of years in Chinese medicine for a variety of reasons.

The current study involved 118 people, 85 or older, with no memory problems who were randomly assigned to take either a ginkgo biloba extract (240 mg daily, 6% terpene lactones and 24% flavone glycosides) or a placebo. The researchers report that 14 people taking the placebo devel-oped mild memory problems, while only seven people devel-oped such problems after taking the ginkgo extract. However, using only those most compliant in tak-ing the herb as directed, the risk reduction for memory problems improved to 68%.

In another recent study, Chinese researchers found that patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who were treated with ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) injec-tions experienced significant increased measurements of coronary blood flow.

Marianne Schneider lives in Leverkusen, where she is employed as a secretary with a major engineering company. She relates how her battle against lifeless and dull hair first began, and how she finally came out victori-ous after more than 40 years.

“Hello, my name is Marianne Schneider. I am 54 years old and have had hair problems as long as I can remember. At the age of 14 I started secretly using my mother’s hair styling products to improve the appearance of those thin strands of hair hanging lifelessly from my head. Mostly the success was only short-lived, though.

I experimented at home with an endless array of shampoos, sprays, hair treatments, conditioners, and dietary supplements. And I spent enormous amounts of money in all kinds of hair dresser shops. But all those efforts were to no avail, for the result didn’t last more than a few hours, at best. Then I looked into the mirror, frustrated to be faced once again with the same thin, limp strands of hair.

When I was 49 it got even worse: One day, I started shed-ding increasing amounts of hair. Not all of it, but there were always far too many hairs in the tub whenever I took a shower. I consulted doctors and had my hormone status analyzed. I went to see an alter-native practitioner, tried therapeutic salts and subjected myself to a body detox therapy. I took iron and zinc supplements, stuffed myself with vitamins and siliceous earth products. None of which had any lasting effect. Sometimes a downy fluff started growing in some spots – only to be shed again soon afterwards. Finally, I had my hair cut short and only ventured into public wearing a head scarf, because by now I had so little hair left that my bald scalp was clearly visible at the front.

One day, at a friend’s birthday party three years ago, I met a woman who took me aside at some point and asked: “You have a problem with your hair, right? Have you ever heard of silica?” “Yes, siliceous earth, that contains silica, doesn’t it?” I replied. “No, I don’t mean siliceous earth, but pure, mineral silica gel, which is more easily absorbed by your body”, she explained, and told me her own tale of woe: “I had the same problem as you. I am 58 years old. Three years ago I suffered a lot of stress, both in my job and in my personal life – my husband left me for a younger woman, and the

workload at the office was more than I could cope with. To top it all, I was losing increasing amounts of hair. It was my 32-year-old daugh-ter who suggested that I try silica gel. Though she wasn’t shedding hair, she had been under an emotional strain because of her thin hair until she started taking Original Silicea Balsam on a regular basis. My alternative practitioner also encouraged me to take this preparation. So I agreed and I don’t regret it! It took three months for the silica gel to show results, but then the success was all the more remarkable. See for yourself – not a trace left of my hair shedding problem.”

And indeed: She had enviably full and shiny hair.

At first I didn’t pin much hope on the silica gel, having invest-ed too much in my hair already in the past. But then, I had nothing to lose. So I went out to buy Original Silicea Balsam and started taking 15 millilitres daily. At first nothing happened. But as my friend had told me she had taken the product over several months, I persevered. And after about three or four months my hair actually did

start to grow back. The new hairs were at first thin, but in time they became thicker and the rest of my hair also felt much stronger.

After about six months an acquaintance com-mented that my hair had a wonderful shine and that I looked healthy and content. That was when I finally ultimately realized that taking this product had been worth while. I had been waiting for decades for that kind of compliment and it that felt very, very good.

I have now been taking Original Silicea Balsam regularly for about three years – at first on a daily basis over a period of nine months. After that length of time, I had the beautiful hair I had been dreaming of all my life. Now all I need is a three-month silica gel treatment twice a year. I wear my beautiful, healthy, shoulder-length hair with pride and I enjoy the admiring glances of people. Also, my skin has become much firmer and elastic in those places where it tends to quickly become flabby in us women.

Whenever I meet someone who has hair or skin problems, I am only too happy to share my wonderful experience with Original Silicea Balsam.”

Yale School of Medicine researchers report that a low concentration of vitamin E in the blood is linked with physical decline in older people. The study on 698 randomly chosen Italian peo-ple age 65 or older looked at blood levels of nutrients including folate, iron and vitamins B6, B12, D and E.

Over three years, declines in three tasks (walking speed, rising repeatedly from a chair, and standing balance) were linked only with low levels of vitamin E.

Taking garlic and vitamin C may bring marginally high blood pressure back to nor-mal, new research shows.

A pilot study from Albany, New York involved six peo-ple with marginally elevated blood pressure. The individu-als underwent four 10-day interventions with one-week breaks in between. First they received a placebo, next 2,000 mg per day of vitamin C, then 650 mg per day of garlic tablets containing bulb powder, and finally vitamin C and garlic tablets in com-bination.

Vitamin C alone did not affect blood pressure. Garlic alone significantly lowered mean systolic but not dia-stolic blood pressure. But garlic taken in combination with vitamin C reduced mean systolic and dia-stolic blood pressure.

“Silicea - for me it was like a miracle!” Decline in aged linked to low levels of vitamin E

Combination eases high blood pressure

Taking vitamin E can improve immunity in the elderly, new research sug-gests. As well, higher vitamin E levels in the blood may help protect elderly people against cognitive impairment and dementia.

Spanish researchers studied otherwise healthy elderly men and women whose immune functions were impaired compared to a con-trol group. However, taking 200 mg (about 300 IU) of vitamin E for three months significantly improved immune functions among members of the group, bringing their levels close to those of the controls.

These findings “suggest that supplementation with vitamin E can produce an improvement of immune functions and therefore of health in aged people,” researchers concluded.

Earlier research conducted in Italy points to the pos-sible role of vitamin E in protecting against cognitive impairment and dementia. Participants with the lowest blood levels of vitamin E had a significantly higher prob-ability of being demented and of suffering from cogni-tive impairment, compared to those with the highest vitamin E levels.

Vitamin E benefits for the elderly

Discover how Silicea helped 45-year-old hotel specialist Janine Wagner win the fight against cellulite and weak connective tissue:

“Even when I was only 20 years old I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. A picture taken during a holiday really threw me for a loop: That young woman on the beach – with the small dimples in her thighs – that was supposed to be me? I was keeping an excellent diet, had a thin body, exercised regularly, and still there were already signs of what I was to see as my greatest physical flaw over the next years. While friends my age joked about cellulite, I stopped showing even my legs in public.

In my early twenties, I secretly tried all kinds of products to fight cellulite. I took dietary supplements, massaged my problem zones with lotions, subjected my body to rubdowns with massage gloves and other contraptions – spend-ing terrific amounts of money. All to no avail. Worse still: After being pregnant with my son Mark, my stomach also lost shape. Finally, at 40, my upper arms started getting flabby, and because of the spider veins on my legs and a few pounds too many on my hips I started wearing pants only, both at work and at home.

When I consulted my doctor, he simply shrugged and said: “That’s something you’ll just have to live with. You have weak connec-tive tissue. The only thing you can do is lead a healthy life and get a lot of physical exercise. In your case it might also help if you lost some weight. And should those spider veins on your legs develop into serious varicose veins, we might have to do some minor surgery. To pre-vent varicose veins from developing, you might consider wearing compression stockings.” When I left his office, I felt devastated: I was 40 years old, overweight, and was supposed to wear compression stockings from now on! For a long time, sex with my husband had already been something I insisted on doing in the dark. Now just imagine me taking off my compres-sion stockings before getting into bed! To me, this was the ultimate turn-off. But it would be another few years before the situation changed.

Two years ago my son told me “Mom, you need to get into the internet”, and gave me his old PC. There, I discovered a whole new world. I talked to people in forums, collected valuable tips and dis-covered a wealth of new information on cellulite. Once again I went on an anti-cellulite shopping

tour – well-prepared by tips from my internet acquaintances – and once again suffered many a disappointment, as I had when I was 20, until I came across a tip by a woman in a forum who reported that Original Silicea Balsam combined with physical exercise had produced sensational results.

I then found many other users in the Internet who were impressed by the tissue-strengthening silicon gel. Still, I was reluctant to believe what I read. I looked up information on the vital trace element silicon and found a great deal of scien-tific evidence for the positive influence of this substance on human health. So I started running on a regular basis and took a dose of Original Silicea Balsam every day. I do admit, when nothing dramatic had hap-pened after three weeks, I was disappointed. I seriously considered giving up. But after about six weeks I did notice a change: The withered, sallow skin of my face looked brighter and smoother and felt softer. And even better: The skin along buttocks, thighs, stomach and arms was becoming increasingly firmer. I knew this could not only be attributed to my running exercises, for at the age of twenty I had also exercised intensively and still had cellulite on my buttocks and legs. My mind was made up: I was definitely going to keep up my daily ration of Original Silicea Balsam. Today, at 45, I feel good in my skin. I have almost reached my personal weight loss goal and am no longer afraid to go to the public swimming-pool – my confidence has experi-enced such a tremendous boost that two months ago I even went out and bought myself the tiniest of bikinis. Sex is no longer an activity that requires the lights to be switched off. Last week my husband actually brought me red roses – something he hasn’t done for years. I am convinced that I owe all this to Original Silicea Balsam. It is the best thing that has happened to me in the past years. My friends asked me “You’re looking so relaxed and young! How on earth do you do it?” I simply tell them my secret recipe: keep a healthy diet, exercise regu-larly, and take a dose of Original Silicea Balsam once a day. It’s my personal beauty formula!”

“Now I feel good in my skin again.”

Are you a grape or a raisin? Does your skin appear supple, smooth and well hydrated, or rather flaccid, wrinkled and dry? If you’re one of the many women who feel they belong in the latter group, you may have already tried a number of methods to re-hydrate the skin. While a select few topical treatments may truly offer benefits, the reality is that addressing skin health from the outside can only go so far. For real, lasting and noticeable change to occur in our skin, research reveals we require two nutrients in combination -- both of which are abundant in nature, but not typically consumed in sufficient amounts, or not always together. Saving your skinAs we age, our skin slowly begins to lose its ability to retain mois-ture, a process that begins as early as in our 20s. UV exposure only speeds this dehydration, as free radicals damage the skin cell membranes and allow further water loss to occur. Dryness increases again when estrogen levels start to decline during perimenopause and menopause. Dehydration is associated with scaly, taut skin, superfi-cial lines and wrinkles, and premature aging. The collagen conundrumCollagen, the main component of all our connective tissue, is a fibrous network of protein that supports our bones, cartilage, tendons, organs -- and skin. Known as the “glue of life,” it is the most abun-dant protein in our bodies and the structure upon and around which skin is built. Collagen binds with water, so it helps keep our skin hydrated, supple and smooth. If the collagen structure is strong, tightly bound and able to hold water, the skin appears healthy and taut. If it is weak, sparse and lacking water, the skin appears unhealthy and wrinkled. As we age, the collagen fibers in our skin will typically become fewer and farther between. The skin gets thinner, less elastic and less able to hold its shape as the collagen network shrinks. So is there a way to slow or reverse damage to collagen, to improve its water-bind-ing potential and support healthier-looking, supple skin? According to years of research on the critical role of silicon and vitamin C in col-lagen synthesis, the answer is “yes.”

Silicon: The lost nutrient The link between silicon and collagen formation was first noted near-ly four decades ago, but only recently have scientists fully understood its potential to dramatically enhance skin health and appearance. Silicon is vital to the formation of connective tissue in many body systems, including the skin. Scientists now know that without adequate silicon, an enzyme (prolyhydroxylase) involved in the for-mation of collagen cannot function properly. By supplementing with silicon (in the form of silica), to make up for what is lacking in our foods and declining in our bodies, we have the ability to keep silicon levels steady and supply one of the vital raw materials for collagen production and youthful skin.

Researchers have witnessed the power of silicon in the lab, where they found that enriching tissue samples with silicon increased col-lagen production by more than 200%. The results have also played out in human trials. In one such study, 50 women with signs of aging skin, thin hair and brittle nails took 10 ml of a liquid silica gel supple-ment orally, and also applied it topically to the face daily. Significant improvements were noted (and confirmed by ultrasound) in the thick-ness of skin, wrinkles and the health of hair and nails.

The vitamin C connectionAs great as silicon is for skin health, it works even better in the company of another well known nutrient: ascorbic acid, or vitamin C. Back in 1981, researchers exposed human connective tissue cells to vitamin C and reported an 8-fold increase in the synthesis of col-lagen! More recently in 2007, a study involving 4,025 women aged 40 to 74 years revealed that those with higher vitamin C intakes had a lower likelihood of a wrinkled appearance and skin dryness.

When there’s not enough vitamin C in our bodies, things can get ugly. Those infamous British sailors who developed scurvy on long sea voyages in the 1700s literally fell apart from a lack of vitamin C. Thankfully, these days an extreme vitamin C deficiency isn’t quite so likely. But keep in mind that, unlike most other living things on this planet, we humans cannot manufacture our own vitamin C. We need to get it from our diet or from supplements every day -- and it’s used up quickly for normal body functions in healthy people.

Keeping up healthy levels of vitamin C is vital, not only to support collagen production for optimum skin health, but because making collagen actually destroys vitamin C, which then in turn needs to be replenished.

Supplement - for your skin’s sake! Our skin is a vast and complex organ, and like all of our organs, it is mainly nourished (or mal-nourished) from within. As the research reveals, ensuring that your body has what it needs to rebuild or maintain its vital collagen structure is the first and most important step towards healthy, supple and youthful-looking skin.

Along with sticking to a healthy diet and ensuring a generous water intake, find high-quality supplements of both silica and vitamin C, preferably in liquid forms. Liquid supplements are fully dissolved and allow for optimum absorption of key nutrients along the entire gastrointestinal tract. After all -- it’s liquid that sepa-rates the raisins from the grapes!

Our health news update for your better living

Two recent studies highlight the potential for non-drug alternatives on cases of high blood pressure. Researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico report that spirulina, a “green food” supplement also known as blue-green algae, may lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol health.

In a study involving 36 men and women aged 18-65 years, participants received supplementa-tion with spirulina (4.5 grams per day) for 6 weeks. By the end of the study, the researchers observed significant decreases in fasting plasma concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and an increase in HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

Additionally, they recorded significant decreases in systolic blood pressure (-10 mm Hg in men and -11 mm Hg in women) and diastolic blood pressure (-8 mm Hg in men and -6 mm Hg in women). The authors conclude that spirulina

“showed a hypolipemic effect [and] also reduc-es systolic and diastolic blood pressure.”

In a related study, US researchers from Emory University School of Medicine found that low blood levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of high blood pressure in white people. The relationship was not noted among blacks.“Though easily corrected by taking a vitamin D supplement or having casual sunlight exposure, vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent in the US,” said researcher Dr. Vin Tangpricha. Halve your knee replacement riskIf you have osteoarthritis in the knee, you may be able to cut your risk of a knee replacement by half if you take glucosamine, say Belgian researchers from the University of Liege.

They studied 275 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who either supplement-ed with glucosamine sulfate or a placebo for at least 12 months and up to three years in a previous study.

Within five years, the researchers found twice as many total knee replacement surgeries had occurred in the placebo group compared to the

group of patients who had taken glucosamine sulfate.

Furthermore, the research-ers found that those who had taken glucosamine sulfate had less use of medications used to alleviate symptoms and less use of other health resources in general. The authors conclude, “Treatment of knee [osteoarthritis] with glucosamine sulphate for at least 12 months and up to 3

years may prevent total joint replacement in an average follow-up of 5 years after drug discon-tinuation.”Source: Osteoarthritis Cartilage,2008;16(2):254-60

US cancer researchers have received approval for a first-of-its kind study on the effect high-dose vitamin C has on non-Hodgkins lymphoma patients. They will study whether high doses of vitamin C can slow the progression of the deadly disease.

“Vitamin C administered intravenously has shown great promise in the laboratory and there has been some anecdotal data in cancer patients, but no one has really ever run a detailed study on humans,” say the researchers. Studies of other cancers may follow.
