Get ready to celebrate Neighbours Day! Plans for neighbourhood BBQs, picnics and other gatherings are under way to celebrate Neighbours Day Aoteroa on the weekend of March 28-29.

A number of Neighbourhood Support groups are getting together for the annual event and Neighbourhood Support Nelson is encouraging other groups to do the same. It’s an ideal opportunity to get to know your neighbours and celebrate your neighbourhood .

Gatherings don’t need to be big or elaborate – even if you just invite your neighbours over for a cuppa, that’s joining in the spirit of things. In previous years gatherings have included morning teas, potluck dinners, street clean-ups and garage sales.

To help neighbourhoods mark the occasion we’re offering meat pack vouchers from Pestell’s butchery and bakery vouchers from Stoke Bakery and Kitchen. Groups can enter the voucher draw by filling out the application form with this newsletter, or via our Facebook page or www.itson.co.nz (search Neighbours Day Aotearoa). The vouchers are being funded by grants from the Nelson City Council and Network Tasman Trust.

Ideas , tips and resources for Neighbours Day events can be downloaded from www.neighboursday.org.nz Even if you don’t take part in an event you can make an effort to be neighbourly with a smile or hello or taking the time to chat with neighbours.

We have signs promoting Neighbours Day that we’d like to display in prominent places. If you’re able to display one on a fence or shop window, please get in touch.

Hello. I would like to start by thanking Neighbourhood Support Nelson and coordinator Karen Clark for this opportunity to introduce myself and share information, ideas, good work stories and a few crime prevention tips with you.

For the previous 10 years I have worked in a response capacity, primarily in the Tasman District which includes Marlborough, Nelson Bays and the West Coast. My current role has a Crime and Crash Prevention focus and I support nine

Community and School Community Officers, who engage with community groups, residents, schools and councils to work in part-nership to prevent crime and road trauma, enhance public safety and maintain public order over the Nelson Bays area.

Unlawfully taken bicycles are on the increase and I ask you to be extra vigilant when storing your own or your childrens’ bicycles at home. Offenders are targeting bicycles in our area for a number of reasons.

There is evidence that some expensive bicycles are being sold on but mostly bicycles are being targeted by offenders looking for a means of transport. At times these bikes are used to move from burglary to burglary, so please record serial numbers and store bicycles securely at home. If we deny offenders transport the positive flow- on effect will result in reducing further crime.

Tips for protecting your vehicle from thieves

Opportunistic thieves have been busy stealing vehicles and stealing valuables from vehicles over summer. In the past month 12 vehicles have been reported stolen to police in Nelson and 28 thefts from cars have been reported. Here are some tips for protecting your vehicle from thieves:

Store your vehicle off the street if possible.

Always lock your vehicle when you leave it.

A vehicle alarm or steering wheel lock are good for deterring thieves from breaking into vehicles. An ignition lock is a good deterrent for a motorbike.

A lockable fuel cap is a good idea, as fuel is frequently stolen.

Don’t leave anything valuable in plain sight in your vehicle – laptops, handbags and electronic items are easy targets for thieves. If you must leave items in your vehicle, put them under the seat or in the boot where they can’t be seen.

From the burglar’s mouth…

Here are some tips on home security from a

rehabilitated burglar, interviewed recently on Radio

NZ. You can listen to the interview at www.radio.nz

(search home security)

Install a house alarm.

Don’t hide keys in obvious places such as under

the door mat.

Lock your garage so burglars can’t access tools to

break into your house.

Don’t leave ladders outside the house as they may

be used by burglars.

Be aware of people hanging around in your

neighbourhood who seem to be watching houses.

Take precautions when you go away to make your

house look lived in. Ask a neighbour to clear your

letterbox.

Summer neighbourhood celebrations

Lots of Neighbourhood Support groups have got

together this summer at social gatherings such as

BBQs and picnics. Pictured above are members of the

group at Saddleback Rd in Todds Valley, who got

together for a BBQ at their new local playground.
