1.PROTECT SOCIAL WELFARE• Problem: Industry in the late

19th century was largely unregulated, women and children had no rights

• Solution: Settlement homes and churches served the community

• Also the YMCA and Salvation Army took on service roles

2. PROMOTE MORAL DEVELOPMENT

• Problem: Some reformers felt that the answer to societies problems was personal behavior

• Solution:They proposed such reforms as prohibition

• Groups wishing to ban alcohol included the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)

3. Create Economic Reform

• Problem: The Panic of 1893 led people to believe that capitalism was bad

• Solution: Some people will embrace Socialism

• Eugene Debs will organize the American Socialist Party in 1901

4. FOSTERING EFFICIENCY

• Problem: The demand for products outweighed the production of goods.

• Solution: Many Progressive leaders put their faith in scientific principles to make society better

• Production line-increase rate at which goods were produced
